The wheel is perhaps the greatest invention in history. After its invention, travelling became faster and more comfortable. A few thousand years ago, people started to use wheels on carriages. Then the first trains began to carry passengers. 

Then here comes another question: When did people first start using cars? The fact is that people developed the first cars in the 1880s, and they started to use cars a lot in the early 20th century. To tell the truth, those early cars were very slow. People were not very happy. 

They also created a lot of problems. For example, they made loud noises and frightened people who sat in them. In addition, passengers often got very dirty after a long ride. Though there were lights in the cars, and people could travel at night, many people still didn't use them at all.

Man has invented many interesting things. They've changed your lives a lot. The followings are four of the most interesting  (invent) in history. 

The Montgolfier brothers  (launch) the first hot air balloon in 1782. It was made of paper. Today hot air balloons are made of cloth or rubber instead  paper. They are used to help people travel. 

The  (one) contact lenses(隐形眼镜) were made of heavy dark glass. Then, in 1948, Kevin Tuohy made a breakthrough in contact lenses, but his contact lenses were still thick and hard. In the 1970s,  (scientist) created the soft plastic contact lenses that many people wear today. 

In 1845, Stephen Perry made the first rubber band(橡皮筋). Rubber bands are made of  special kind of rubber. They are really  (practice). 

The first remote control wasn't so convenient. It  (have) a long wire connected to the television. People tripped over the wire,  no one liked the remote control. In 1955, Eugene Polley invented a wireless remote control. It used light  (control)the television. It didn't work well on sunny days, but it made people's lives easier. 

The oil-paper umbrella has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. There are different  about the invention of the umbrella in China. The most popular one has something to do with Lu Ban. It's said that once he and  wife visited the West Lake. It started raining suddenly. His wife said, "Let's have a competition. Before sunrise tomorrow, the one who comes up  a good way to visit the West Lake even on rainy days will be the winner. " Lu Ban  it was easy. He collected some tools and materials. Then he spent the whole night  pavilions (亭子) around the lake. He was quite proud of his work. 

The next morning,  Lu Ban talked about his achievements and felt proud, his wife held something unusual in her hand. It could be opened into a round . Lu Ban was surprised. He found that the object, made of silk and bamboo, could be opened and closed . Lu Ban said, "You win. Your invention can protect us from rain better. " So the umbrella was . 

Later, people began to use paper, which was  than silk. To make the umbrella waterproof, people brushed a kind of oil on the surface. So the oil-paper umbrella appeared. 

It is 40 metres long and 6 metres wide. This must be the biggest bus you have ever seen. It can carry 1,200 to 1,400 people. It is China's new Super Bus. It is going for a test run in Beijing at the end of this year.  They hope it can solve traffic problems. 

The Super Bus runs along fixed tracks (固定轨道).  The legs have wheels at one end. Small cars can drive under the bus, so the Super Bus does not take up much road space. 

The bus runs on electricity and sun energy. It can travel up to 60 kilometres per hour. Its creator, Song Youzhou, says it can reduce a lot of traffic jams (堵塞). In that way, it can save 860 tons of fuel every year, according to Song. 

" Subways are nearly ten times more expensive to build," Song said. 

Some people worry that the Super Bus may not be safe.  The Super Bus has laser scanners (激光扫描仪) between its legs. The scanners make sure the cars keep a safe distance.

Every year, the world's best minds create new inventions that make our lives easier and more interesting. Here are some best inventions listed by Time magazine.

Photo-taking drone（无人机）

Spark is a camera drone. It can fly above your head and take photos. A Chinese company called DJI made it. It is very small. When folded, it is as small as a can of soda. Like other drones, you can control it with a remote control. But you can also control it with hand gestures.

This is the coolest part. Put your hand close to your face. Spark is ready to take a photo of you when its red light flashes. Then, put your hand down. After a few seconds, the photo is taken. With hand gestures, taking photos is very convenient.

Hospital robot Moxi

Nurses are busy with many things during atypical workday. It can be hard for nurses to make time for their most important task: interacting（互动）with their patients. The company Diligent Robotics has built a hospital robot called Moxi. It can help nurses do non-patient-facing tasks so that they have more time for patient care.

Moxi has an arm to reach and a gripper（抓爪）to pick up things. It can move around easily. It is able lo finish tasks one by one on its own. After testing Moxi for one year, the company plans to send Moxi to more US hospitals by the end of 2020.

Smart hand

People use artificial intelligence（AI）in many ways. The company Brain Robotics used it to make a smart prosthetic（假体的）hand. With its AI software, the hand can "learn" from its user and vice versa（反之亦然）. This kind of learning helps the hand work like a real hand. The more it is used, the more lifelike it will be.

The hand is cheaper than other prosthetic hands thanks to the use of 3D printing. Each hand is printed to fit the user correctly. Users don't have to pay for extra doctor visits.

Inventions have played a crucial role in human history. The wheel, one of the earliest inventions, made it easier to transport goods. The printing press, invented by Gutenberg, changed the way information was spread. It allowed books to be printed in large numbers, making knowledge more accessible. The steam engine was another important invention that led to the Industrial Revolution. It transformed manufacturing and transportation. In modern times, inventions like the computer and the Internet have revolutionized communication and information sharing. These inventions have not only made our lives more convenient but also changed the way we work and interact with each other.

Benjamin Franklin came into the world on January 17, 1706. The family was a big one with several children. Ben went to school when he was 8. Although he did well in his study, there was not enough money for his education. So he left school after two years. But he never stopped learning. In 1742, he invented the famous Franklin stove.

Before Ben invented the Franklin stove, people heated their homes with fire in the traditional fireplace (壁炉). Using such kind of fireplace was not good because most of the heat went into the chimney (烟囱). And it was also dangerous because the fire in the fireplace could set the house on fire. Ben came up with the idea of using the baffle (折流板) system to make the heat travel throughout the stove. The Franklin stove used less wood and was safer to heat the room.

What's more, Ben was interested in electricity. After many years of hard work, he finally had a plan to prove (证明) that lightning was electricity and he was successful at last in the kite experiment.

Although he had many inventions in life, he never kept them to himself. He wanted to share them with people all over the world.

I always make friends on the Internet. I can meet many people and we can talk to each other happily. We chat about many things. I think it's good for me. But some people say that some of the friends on the Internet might even be bad guys. To solve this problem, I think we should choose friends more carefully on the Internet.

I often buy many things on the Internet. Many things on the Internet are cheaper than those in the shops. I can find everything I want in less time and with less money.

There's a lot of useful information on the Internet. I can learn about the world faster on the Internet. Sometimes I play games on the Internet to relax.

My life has become more comfortable and convenient since the Internet came into it. I can do a lot of things on it more quickly. My e-life is very nice! I enjoy it very much!

How has technology made your life easier? When you go to a shopping mall, you can enjoy  Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one  your phone. In fact, all of these  can be seen as the first building blocks of a smart city. 

The idea of a smart city was suggested by US company IBM in 2010. Actually, a smart city is a city that uses digital technology, such  networks and the "Internet of things", to improve city planning, save money and resources, and make  life more convenient. 

Smart cities will allow us to save resources. By  5G networks to check the usage of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out  to use these resources more efficiently.  example, water and gas pipes could remind repair workers when there is a leak. Air pollution could be more closely monitored, too. 

Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But since we've already  successful examples, it won't be long until cities join in. Tech Republic says that by 2050, about 60 percent of people worldwide will live in smart cities.
