Passage A

In Western countries, it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug. 

You might hug your teammates after winning a basketball game. If one of your friends is having a bad day, you can hug them to cheer them up. Friends who haven't seen each other for a long time will usually hug each other when meeting. 

Of course, people in different countries have different opinions when it comes to hugging. After coming to China, I' ve noticed that people are generally more reluctant to hug than they are in my home country, the US. My Chinese friends told me that hugging is considered to be very intimate in their culture. It usually only happens between people who are really close to each other, like couples. Chinese people don't usually hug in public, either. 

But people's attitudes towards hugging can also change. I remember watching a video story about a"hugging party". A local artist held the party, inviting strangers and asking them to hug each other. 

The Chinese participants clearly looked uncomfortable. However, after the party, several of them changed their minds. They decided that hugging doesn't have to be awkward and can actually be quite nice. So next time you see your mom or dad, give them a hug— see how it makes you feel. 

We all know that the British people love their manners（礼仪）. They are part of their national identity（特性）， as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently， I read online that they say "sorry" up to eight times a day．

After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been quite a conservative（保守的） country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying "please" and "thank you" is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say "please"．

Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways： they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think．

Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways. First, the simple act of writing something down makes it much (easy) for you to understand and remember it. Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to  you are studying for a test. Third, note-taking (offer) variety to your study time and helps you to hold your interest.

You will want to take notes during classroom (discuss) and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report. You will also want to develop your own method of taking notes. Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is  selective process. That means you must first decide what is important enough (include) in your notes. The following methods may work best for you.

·Read the text quickly to find (it) main facts and ideas.

(care) read the text and look for words that can show main points and supporting facts.

·Write your notes  your own words.

·Note any questions or ideas you may have about  was said or written.

I've always liked the famous saying, "Practice makes perfect. "

I'm now in the second month of teaching as a language assistant in France. I do love my job. Most of my classes here are French classes. That is to say, the students have extra English lessons to help them become better language learners. However, when I ask my students (describe) their favorite movies, they even cannot tell me the names of any movies. I'm really (surprise).

My French is far  perfect. I remember (exact) how I felt when I was sitting in a classroom and had to speak a strange, unfamiliar language in front of my classmates and a native speaker. I was very frightened and nervous. After I became a language assistant (I), I could understand how valuable the role was. Assistants provide  opportunity(机会) for foreigners to listen to a real accent(口音), learn everyday phrases and of course, offer them a chance to practice speaking with native speakers. So all they need to do is practice.

There's always something new to learn such as vocabulary or grammar. I really want to help these students become the best learners but I can't help them  they start to help themselves.

Just like my students, I (buy) a French book and I want to learn French well. , only a few days after buying it, I threw the book in the bottom of my bag without reading it. So I guess there is only one thing left for me to do: Pick up the book and start taking my own (advise) to be a better learner.
