Zhang Qiang, a researcher who has been in the AI field for over ten years, never expected his work would connect with jiandu-China's 3, 000-year-old bamboo and wooden slips. Together with his team, Zhang developed  DeepJiandu. It is the world's first large-scale data set (大规模数据集) designed to recognize (识别) characters of Chinese relics (文物). 

Before DeepJiandu appeared, researchers spent too much time recognizing jiandu characters. By scanning over 40, 000 jiandu samples (样本), DeepJiandu can provide 7, 416 pictures. This can help researchers look for jiandu research methods. Zhang's team also studied many different samples and created nearly 100, 000 notes by using DeepJiandu. These notes can allow beginners to learn about ancient Chinese writing and history better. 

Today, this technology is used not only for scientific research but also as an important part of museums. For example, to help visitors learn about the interesting stories behind jiandu, the Changsha Jiandu Museum in Hunan Province developed an AR picture book. By scanning the QR codes (二维码) on book pages, visitors can learn historical facts such as life tips for people in ancient times. Meanwhile, two AI robots named "Little Jian" and "Little Du" are also used at the Gansu Jiandu Museum to provide guiding services for visitors. 

"Using technology on jiandu not only makes the relics more interesting but also shows how China is mixing history with modern creativity, "said Zhu Jianjun, director of the Gansu Jiandu Museum. 

How Technology Changes Communication

Communication has changed a lot over time. In the past, sending a letter could take weeks. Then came the (telephone), which made talking to people far away much faster. Today,  (electronic mail), or email, lets us send messages around the world in seconds. It's a key part of modern  (communicate). 

The Internet doesn't just help us talk; it also changes how we work and learn.  (television) used to be just for news and shows, but now (television shop) is a popular way to buy things from home. For students,  (electronic book) are common, and many take  (educate) courses online. Some people have even become  (telework), using computers to do their jobs from anywhere. 

 you think about it, these changes are amazing. you have an Internet connection, you can reach almost anyone and learn almost anything. Technology truly makes the world smaller. 

With the development of Internet technology, the two-dimensional code (二维码) is very popular among us. It's also called the quick response code (QR code). A Japanese company  this special code in 1994. It's  used in China now. 

QR codes are used for keeping . They are also used for storing pictures. It is  to use a QR code. If you want to get the information in it, just take out your phone and scan (扫描) the code with  app, and then you can get it easily. 

Today, QR codes are popular in China. There  QR codes everywhere. They are on TV  the Internet. People have printed QR codes on Chinese train tickets since 2010. When a machine scans the code on the ticket, information of the ticket owner and the train will appear on the screen in a few . 

Nowadays, special cards with QR codes are introduced  old people in some cities. If they lost, people can know their names, addresses and telephone numbers of their family members by scanning the codes on the cards. How convenient the QR code is!

Today, AI humans are popular at home and abroad (国内外). 

 They can imitate real people's voices and movements and even copy their personalities. But what else can they do? And what can only be done by humans but not AI?

 They can be idols (偶像), vloggers (视频博主), reporters and more. For example, China Daily has its own digital reporter, Yuanxi. She can speak English and process (处理) data fast. This can help the newsroom work faster. 

In February 2022, a Chinese tech company showed its first digital idol Xi Jiajia.  During China Fashion Week in September 2022, Xi Jiajia became famous in an online virtual fashion show (虚拟时装秀). On January 28, 2025, a special performance called Yang BOT amazed audiences (观众) at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. And it also surprised people all over the world. 

"Virtual idols could do something that people cannot do in the real world, such as time travel, " said Liu Qian.  They can appear to be in different places and from different times in history. 

But AI humans have disadvantages. Take Yuanxi as an example. She still doesn't have much human touch or high EQs.  What's more, virtual people can't team up and communicate with others in real time. 

As Yuanxi wrote, "Virtual employees (雇员) show the power of AI but they are not a replacement for traditional human employees. "

Have you ever imagined being able to communicate with your pets at home and let them understand everything you say? It sounds too good to be true, but scientists have started using AI to help communicate with animals. 

AI allows humans to use technology to watch and understand the sounds and signals (信号) animals use, so we can try to speak back to them. By decoding (解码) recordings of animals talking to one another, humans can communicate in their language, and it could be better than teaching them to use human sign language. 

Scientist Karen Bakker said that AI is already helping humans communicate with bats (蝙蝠) and bees. This could change what we know about nature and the relationships between humans and animals. 

Karen explained how scientist Yossi Yovel had used recordings and AI to understand bats. "Bats argue for food, they communicate differently between genders (性别); they have their names, or 'signature calls' (专属名号), " she said. "But unlike human mothers who raise the pitch (声调) of their voices when talking to babies, bat mothers lower the pitch. "

"When bees 'speak' to one another, they use body movements and the sounds to communicate, " Karen said. She said scientists now know how bees say things such as "be quiet" and "stop". Scientist Tim Landgraf even created a robot bee that entered a hive (蜂房) and was able to communicate with the bees when it wanted them to stop doing something or fly. 

Perhaps soon, humans will be able to communicate with more animals. 

On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI's GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5. 58 million and used 2, 048 computer chips (芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money. 

DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a world math test, it got 79. 8% right, a little higher than OpenAI's model. A simple kind of R1 can even run on cheap computers, helping schools and small companies. 

DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19, 000 programmers all over the world started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments (实验) with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, "This kind of free AI could change the world. "

US tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a "big step forward", proving (证明) that smart ideas beat expensive tools. 

As a DeepSeek engineer said, "We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use. " With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

Kayak calls the new VR app a way to "test drive" a city from home, both to choose a place and to find out what to see once you get there. The app brings visual (视觉的) information and an audio (声音的) tour of different places together. As well as visiting local hotspots (当地热点), users can go around in hotels too.
