Dana Csonka is an adult now. When she was 8, her house caught on fire. The fire left burn scars(伤疤) over 18 percent of her body, including on her face, neck and arms. She got better and returned to school. Her classmates were mean, though. They made fun of her scars. "I didn't have any friends." she said.

Her nurses at the hospital had a suggestion. They said she should go to a camp for kids who had been burned. She went there every summer for 10 years. It helped her feel better. She met kids who could understand what she went through.

The burn camp started in 1988. Since then, it has been offering children with burn scars a week of relief from looking different. Campers go there to swim, play games and do many other things.

Kevin Aeling is 14. This is his second summer at the camp. A year and a half ago, a terrible fire left scars over 25 percent of his body.

At first, he was not sure if he wanted to go to the camp. "He said, ‘I don't want people to stare at me,'" said his mother. "I said, Kevin, it's a burn camp. Other people are there who have burns."He ended up loving it. After camp, his mother noticed a difference. He was no longer embarrassed about the special clothes he had to wear for his scars. He was more comfortable being himself.

Every year, the Thursday of the camp week is Fire Truck Day. Fire trucks arrive, along with campers from previous(以前的) years, doctors and nurses, and family members. Campers can see fire trucks up close and talk with firefighters. Sometimes, they are the very firefighters who rescued the campers months or years earlier. Fire Truck Day allows them to see each other in a happy situation, which is always the campers' most unforgettable day. 

Think of the animal world and a group of colorful wild animals will spring to mind: a parrot's rainbow feathers or the showy scales of sea fish. But, many mammals(哺乳动物) on the planet come in only two colors: black and white. Spend some time exploring what science has discovered about these animals' appearances, and you'll see that basic black and white isn't so basic at all.

After school on Friday, I waited at the school gate to walk home with Jemma, as usual. Then I saw1 talking and laughing happily with some other girls. She glanced(瞥了一眼) at me and left me alone there. I knew right then that I had2 my best friend.

Your dog is barking, but you can't hear it! Your best friend is telling you joke, but you can't catch it!terrible! The people who have hearing loss  (consider) deaf.

It's not easy being deaf, and although some kids are born deaf, many others lose their hearing later on. So it's important to know how  (be) a good friend with anyone in the deaf community. Here are some ways.

Be patient and do not give up on a friend  hearing loss. If you repeat what you are saying  (loud), and it isn't helping your deaf friend, try to write it down or use signals instead.

Also, remember that deafness isn't the same as being stupid. Deaf kids are just as smart as anyone else. Don't treat your deaf friends like they are not very smart. they can't hear you, there's nothing wrong with their brain.

Don't forget about texts, (email), and so on. These are much  (good) ways to keep in touch with your deaf friend than phone calls. If the two of you can sign, a video call is great!

It's fun to communicate with others. We should support all of  (we) friends, and make new ones!

Trees play an important part in our environment. For a start, they make air  (更干净) for us to breathe. The older a tree is, the more important it is to us. Why not look at ancient tree  (仔细) around you and find out more?

For the past  (十五) years, a charity called the Woodland Trust has been recording ancient trees in the country. It has created a database(数据库) about these trees.

Since the database was set up, the Woodland Trust has  (添加) over 180,000 trees, but it believes there are many more to be found. It's hoped that all  (成员) of the public will help to locate them—including you.

You can take an  (积极) part in the Woodland Trust's project. Perhaps when you next go for a walk with your family, you can examine the trees you pass to see  (它的) age. If you find one that you think could be very old, record  (确切) where it is using an online map. If you want to record the tree, you should take a photo. Don't  (忘记) to make sure you are allowed to examine it closely if the tree isn't on public land.

"Ancient trees are as much a part of our heritage(遗产) as works of  (艺术)," explains Jeremy Evans of the Woodland Trust. "But they don't get the same protection. The good news is, you don't have to be a tree expert to take part."

Dunhuang is a historic city in Gansu. In  times, Dunhuang was an important center of trade. As the Silk Road developed, Dunhuang became China's western gateway to the world. Here, different cultures met and each other. People from foreign countries did business and communicated with the local people. If you visit Dunhuang, you will be able to see the Mogao Caves(莫高窟). If you walk , you will discover some of the wonderful artworks. There are over 45,000 square metres of beautiful paintings on the cave walls, thousands of statues.

Over the years, China has made great efforts to protect the Mogao Caves. Today, you can also find high-quality photos of the artworks on the Internet. People all over the world now have a  to see Dunhuang's treasures online. 

The world has a plastics problem. And not just with bottles. Straws(吸管), toothbrushes, toys—all kinds of plastics are placed in landfills. There are 5 billion tons of plastic waste in the world. Landfills have a large part of it. By 2050, they could have 13 billion tons.

Much of plastic rubbish finds its way into the ocean. Scientists say 165 million tons of plastic pieces are floating around out there. And most plastic won't disappear itself. It will remain in the ocean forever. Whales get caught in plastic fishing nets. Birds die because of eating plastic straws and bottle caps. It endangers ocean life. Plastic rubbish even ends up in the food we eat.

Governments are realizing that recycling may not be enough. They are taking more actions. Though it is hard work, it is still a solvable problem. In Britain, people are not allowed to use plastic bags except in hospitals. Scotland and several coastal cities in the US stop people from using plastic straws as well. The US alone throws away some 500 million plastic straws a day. That's enough to circle the Earth twice. "Saying no to a plastic straw is an easy way to make a big difference," Diana Lofflin said. "Do we really want to pass on to our children a world harmed by plastic?"

People have found some tasty ways to reduce waste. A company in India made the first-ever spoon that people can eat. You don't have to eat the spoon. You can throw it away. It decomposes(分解) in just a few days. David Edwards, a scientist at Harvard University, designed an eatable bag which can protect the food or drink inside. It is a delicious replacement for plastic ones. 

Did you have cereal(麦片) for breakfast this morning? If you did, you're not alone. Lots of people eat cereal for breakfast every day. In fact, cereal is popular all over the world. It all started with one man, Will Keith Kellogg.

Will was born on April 7, 1860, in Battle Creek, Michigan. His first job was as a stock boy at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. A sanitarium is a special kind of place that is a little like a hospital. A sanitarium is meant for people who are ill for a long time or who are getting over a serious illness. Will had other jobs as he got older. But when he grew up, he became a manager of the sanitarium. His brother, John, was the chief doctor there.

One big problem at the sanitarium was the patients' diets. The patients needed healthy diets, but it was also important for the food to taste good. Will was trying to find a good food choice to take the place of the bread, but it wasn't going very well. Then, by accident, Will found something even better. He left some wheat to cook too long. When it was rolled out, it formed large, thin flakes(薄片). He asked his brother to serve it to the patients, and they loved it! In fact, they liked it so much that they wanted breakfast flakes sent to them even after they left the sanitarium. So Will started a new business in 1884: selling packaged breakfast flakes. Before long, Kellogg's breakfast cereal was popular in other countries, too. Today, there are many kinds of breakfast cereals. But it all started with one man and one idea.

Will did more than just create breakfast flakes. His company made a lot of money. But he always shared it with others generously. He used much of his money to help children. He also used his money to help in several other charities (慈善机构). Will Kellogg died in 1951. But his most famous invention is as popular as ever.

A 3-year-old boy who was lost in the woods for two days is now safe at home with his family. But Casey Hathaway told his rescuers(救援者) that he was not alone in the rainy, freezing cold woods. He said he was with a friend—a bear.

The child went missing on January 22 while playing with friends near his grandmother's house in North Carolina. When the other children returned but Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police.

Police formed a search team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and—no Casey.

Then on January 24, someone called the police saying he heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. He was in good health.

Casey told the rescuers he had hung out with a black bear for two days, a bear he called his "friend".

The police officer Chip Hughes spoke with reporters from several news agencies. He said Casey did not say how he could survive in the woods for two days in the cold, rainy weather. "However," the police officer said, "he did say he had a friend in the woods that was a bear with him."

Hundreds of people helped in the search and rescue efforts, including some 600 volunteers, police and members of the army. Doctors at the medical center gave Casey some examination. He was then sent to his family on January 25.

His mother talked with reporters and thanked everyone who joined the search for her son. "We just want to tell everybody that we're very thankful that you took the time out to search for Casey," said his mother. "He is up and talking. He's already asked to watch cartoons.

During the last few years of his life, my dad lived just up the road from me in a tiny house. He had been1 for over 20 years after losing my mom. His own mother had 2 passed away too. He was disabled and retired,3 he spent a lot of time by himself.

To see the world around us, we use our eyes. Our eyes are very clever. Each eye catches a different picture, so we can have a 3D picture of what we see. Our eyes can help us to see things that are a very long way away or very close. We can see well when it is bright or dark. Being able to see well is really important. We do things every day with eyes. If we couldn't see well, it would be very dangerous.

Our eye is made up of different parts. In the middle of the eye is the pupil that lets in light. The coloured part is called the iris, which helps the pupil open and close. The eyelid can stop the eyeball from being dry and protect it. The eyelashes keep dirt and other things away from our eyes.

Our eyes will not work so well when we don't use them properly. So it's very necessary for us to take good care of our eyes. There are many things we can do to protect them. For example, it's good for us to get our eyes checked at least twice a year.

Our eyes are amazing and are working hard every second we are awake. Be kind to our eyes!

Jeremy Gilley was a young film-maker. For one day he wanted to stop all the wars in the world.

What did he do? In 2007, he (创建) the organization Peace One Day (POD). At first no one wanted to listen, but Gilley didn't give up. He travelled (国外) and went to war areas, (包括) the Middle East. He made a short film about his idea and showed it to world leaders. Finally, he won a large (数量) of support from many famous people. In 2010, he won the support of the UN. They decided to make 21st September an International Day of Peace. It was a big (胜利) for Jeremy. He also wanted to (传播) his message to ordinary people all over the world. On his journey he met thousands of (各种各样的) people. He showed them his film and gave talks. People were (去世的) in war areas because it's too dangerous for doctors and nurses to go there. So in 2012, an actor went to Afghanistan and organized a huge polio vaccination(脊髓灰质炎疫苗) activity for Peace Day. As a result, nurses gave vaccinations to 1.4 million children.

 (最近), thousands of projects have been planned to help people in war areas, to raise money and communicate the (重要性) of peace. 100 million people are active on Peace Day in 192 countries with health care, peace walks, films and music events.

I'm Marcus Higgs and I'm a conservation (保护) officer. This means I work in the countryside, and I the animals and plants that live there. I was born in Devon, in the south of England but at the moment I am living and on Ascension Island. Ascension Island is in the middle of the ocean between Africa and South America. I am here two years. I work in a place called the Green Mountain National Park. In the park, there is a mountain and some hills and there are some smaller in the water around the coast, and lots of beaches of course. 

Several years ago, two teenagers Poppy and Amy with a group of friends started a project called Silver Surfers. They had a clear goal: they wanted to help elderly people to feel more connected to other people, through the use of the Internet.

The two teenagers started the idea after seeing how the Internet had changed their own grandparents' lives. Their grandparents could use the Internet a little but wanted to learn more. After the two girls had given them a few basic IT lessons, they were able to use the computer more confidently and became users of social media(社交媒体).

The two students were so encouraged by the success that they got several of their friends to join them. Together, they started to visit elderly people in their town. Many of the people there couldn't even switch on a computer without help. But the young people were amazed how much they had learned after only a few lessons.

The silver surfers had different interests. Some of them wanted to use Wechat to stay in touch with family members who were far away from them. Others were interested in getting ideas for traveling, learning how to play an instrument or cooking.    ▲    89-year-old Shelia, together with a friend, managed to create a cooking tutorial on the Intermet; 93-year-old Merlyn succeeded in making a rap video; Albert, 89, wanted to learn how to use the web to find friends he fought with in World War Ⅱ and in doing so he was surprised by how easy it was to reconnect online with people he hadn't seen many years. He even managed to use his newly-learnt skills to reunite with his daughter whom he had lost touch with.

This project has been reported in several countries and a number of follow-up projects have been started. They are all helping the elderly people to have fun through the Internet—thanks to two teenage girls. 

Did the wind ever blow your hat away? Did you ever drop your notebook on a windy day? How many important pages did you lose? Wind is moving air. It can pick up light materials and carry them far away.

Wind is a force of erosion(侵蚀). It can carry away small materials such as dust particles(灰尘微粒) and sand particles from the earth's surface. However, wind itself does not cause much erosion. Most "wind" erosion is done by particles which are carried by wind. Wind is an important natural force of erosion in dry places.

Wind can easily pick up sand particles. When they are blown against rocks, the sand particles hit the rocks in the wind. This happens over and over again. Little by little, the rocks wear down.

The particles which are carried by wind not only cause erosion, they also build up. What is carried away in the wind in one place will drop somewhere else.

When wind slows down, it drops the materials that it is carrying. When sand is dropped, it builds up and becomes dunes(沙丘). Sand dunes are common in deserts and on beaches. Some dunes can be harmful. They can bury(埋) farms and homes, even whole towns.

Wind carries dust particles higher and farther than it carries sand. Thick deposits of wind-blown dust may also build up. The wind-blown dust is called loess(黄土). Loess deposits are found in Washington State and Oregon State.

Sometimes people plant grasses and trees to try to stop wind erosion. How does this help? The roots of plants help to hold down soil and other particles found on the ground.
