Twelve years ago, doctors told Cai Lu he would never walk again. Now, the 34-year-old has1  them wrong—not only by walking, but also by running a prosthetics (假肢) company.

Cai's life journey changed because of a terrible2  in 2014. His right leg was cut off at once, and his left leg was broken. He fell into a 35-day coma (昏迷). For three years, doctors tried hard to3  his left leg, but each small improvement was followed by another4 operation.

Cai has also followed his athletic dream, joining China's first disabled golf team in 2025. What interests him most is to travel as a(n)10  speaker, who shares his belief: "Keep being brave."

Jennifer Heldmann is a planetary scientist. Her team at NASA is looking for water on the moon and Mars (火星), which will help decide if astronauts can live in these places.

When Jennifer was 10 years old, she saw the movie Space Camp.    She loved the movie and became interested in space science. When she was at college, she learned that there was no water on the moon. Later, she and her team started sending research tasks there. The information they got told them, "Hey, maybe there is water on the moon!"    They love to discover something new.

When their team learned that there was some form of water on Mars, they began to wonder: Is there anything living in the water?   

They also do research in Iceland and Antarctica, through which they learn how ice and water work in cold environments.    They can know how water behaves on the moon and Mars because they understand how it behaves on Earth.

In Jennifer's opinion, kids are the future of space exploration. They are going to be the scientists and astronauts who'll discover space mysteries.    Having a face-to-face communication with scientists is also a good idea.

Recently, researchers have discovered a new bacterium (细菌) that feeds on plastics. Scientists say the discovery could help reduce a flood of plastics that are ending up in the landfills (垃圾填埋场) and polluting oceans.

Plastic is one of the most difficult materials to break down or recycle. To solve the problem, a team from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Germany found the new soil bacterium. It was found in an area with a lot of plastic wastes. The team discovered the bacterium could feed on polyurethane (聚氨酯), which is widely used in making different plastic products.

It was reported that polyurethane made up 3.5 million tons of Europe's plastics last year. One problem is that recycling polyurethane requires a lot of energy. So most polyurethane-based wastes are sent to landfills, where they can give off dangerous chemicals.

The team found that the bacterium could produce enzymes (酶) that could eat polyurethane. This would make it possible to break down plastic waste. The results were recently reported in a science magazine.

Hermann Heipisper helped write the report. He said that the finding "marks an important step in being able to reuse hard-to-recycle products".

The research is part of a European Union program that tries to find useful bacteria. The goal is to discover living things that can help turn plastics into materials that can be broken down biologically.

Some scientists advise against introducing the man-made bacteria into the environment at present, which could be harmful. It is suggested that much more study should be carried out to learn more about it. "Such research is needed before we can take action such as putting the plastic-eating bacteria into the oceans," a scientist said.

Minqin, lying in the city of Wuwei in Gansu, is sandwiched between China's third and fourth largest deserts. It is one of the country's main sources (来源) of sandstorms. In 2007, then 26-year-old Ma Junhe started Minqin's first environmental protection volunteer program named Save Minqin after reading in a newspaper that his hometown was at risk of being covered by sand within 17 years. The program started with just 60 volunteers. Last year, more than 6,000 volunteers, most of whom were aged between 18 and 30, also called GenZers, planted suosuo trees there.

Zhang Liwen, an 18-year-old girl from Xi'an, spent five days planting suosuo trees in Minqin. "This idea came from my wish to complete a meaningful coming-of-age ceremony, but now I find value in contributing (贡献) to society," Zhang said. The vlogs shared by Zhang are lively and attractive. She filmed a group of young volunteers, including herself, planting trees with stylish sports sunglasses, enjoying local noodles in their tent, and dancing in the desert after work.

Li Xiuxiang, from Heilongjiang province, also posted her volunteer work online. "This task isn't just for Minqin, it's for all of China," she said.

Lee Ting-Hsuan, a 20-year-old student from Taiwan, is one of thousands of volunteers who travel to Minqin every year. Around 20 young volunteers from Macao also joined the program. "Through tree planting, we get a deeper understanding of Northwest China and its culture," one of them said.

Since 2007, over 80,000 volunteers have joined this program and they have planted over 1.52 million trees, making a green promise in the yellow sands. Ma Junhe said, "GenZers are more confident in achieving their dreams. They really enjoy meaningful public activities, and help a lot by sharing their stories online, attracting more people to take action."

Jake Pinnick, the 36-year-old from the United States, has an unusual story of "Becoming Chinese". Now he is known as a foreign coach at Wudang Mountain in Hubei province, teaching martial arts (武术) to students from around the world.

As a fan of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Pinnick always wanted to learn "real kung fu from its roots (根源)". Attracted by a video of Wudang martial arts online, he finally made up his mind to come to China in 2010.

Life in China was not easy at the beginning. The training was hard, but he never gave up. By repeating every move countless times each day, he gradually realized that martial arts are never supposed to compete against or win over others. Instead, they help achieve balance between inner spirit and outer strength, just as his master once told him, "Develop virtue before practising martial arts."

After finishing his five-year training at Wudang Mountain, Pinnick returned to the US with his Chinese wife and their daughter. However, he found himself "stuck between Chinese and American culture". So in 2018, he decided to return to Wudang Mountain to teach and spread Wudang culture.

Over the past years in China, Pinnick has become completely used to the local life. He now enjoys drinking hot tea instead of coffee. He is also proud of his Chinese name, Li Zigen, given by his master.

Pinnick hopes to deepen understanding between different cultures through his efforts. With encouragement from his wife, he started posting videos online about martial arts in 2020. His videos soon got popular, attracting millions of fans. Now he is busy preparing for a new international summer camp. "I want to let people from all over the world enjoy the beauty of traditional Chinese culture and benefit from it," he said.
