The Dead Sea is a very special place on Earth. It's between Israel and Jordan. The Dead Sea is not a real sea. It's a big lake.  No fish can live in it, and no plants grow around it. That's why it's called the "Dead Sea".

 The water is so salty that you can float on it easily without swimming. Many people go there to float and enjoy the sunshine.  The mud (泥) from the Dead Sea is also good for skin. People often put it on their faces and bodies.

 But because of too much water being taken from the rivers that feed it, the Dead Sea is getting smaller every year. Scientists are trying to find ways to save it.

The Dead Sea is one of the saltiest places on earth. Although it is a lake, it is called a "sea" due to its lack of fresh water.

Why is the Dead Sea so salty? One reason is that it is about 430.5 meters below sea level. A long time ago, salt water flowed into the Dead Sea. Now, water from the Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea. With no outlet (出口), the water evaporates (蒸发) under the hot sun, leaving salt behind.

Scientists say that the Dead Sea is falling. Its water level is dropping by 3.3 feet per year. People are using more water from the river. Less fresh water enters the lake every year.

Lakes are usually filled with life. But the Dead Sea lives up to its name. Nothing lives there. There are no plants. No birds or animals can drink the water. If fish from the river swim into the Dead Sea by mistake, they will die. The water kills almost everything. It is saltier than ocean water.

People like to visit this lake. There are hotels and beaches. People like to float (漂浮) on the salt water. The salt water holds them up as if they were lying on rafts (木筏)! Some tourists even like to read books as they float on the water. They are covered with salt when they come out of the water.

The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world. It is about 9,600,000 square kilometers in size. This is almost the size of  America or China. The desert covers eleven countries in the north of Africa. 

The Nile runs through the Sahara Desert all year round. But there are also other rivers running through it seasonally (季节性地). The geography of the desert includes huge sand dunes (沙丘) and dune fields. Some of the sand dunes are so huge that they can even be over 152 meters high. But there are also other amazing landforms (地形) in different parts of the desert. 

It is very hot and dry in the Sahara Desert. The temperature there is usually 30℃. However, during the hottest months, the temperature can go over 50℃. Because of the high temperatures and poor conditions of the desert, only a few plants live here, just about 500 kinds. They also play a role in the number of animals. In the driest part of the desert, there are only 70 different kinds of animals. 

Today the Sahara's population is around four million. They move from place to place through the desert. Because of this there are many different cultures and languages in this area.

You must have seen many rivers in your life, but have you ever heard of stone rivers? Such rivers can be found in some parts of the world. Among them, the Big Stone River is a very amazing one.

The Big Stone River is the most interesting sight of Taganay National Park in Russia. Different from other rivers, it is filled with rocks and stones. Not a drop of water can be seen. Interestingly, as one comes near to the rocky river, the sound of running water can be heard. Rocks fell down from the mountains slowly and made the river of rocks.

The Big Stone River is about 6 km long and is made up of many small rocky rivers. It cuts through a thick forest like a real river. It is mostly about 200 meters wide, and in some places, it is up to 700 meters wide. Some of the rocks weigh up to 10 tons each and the layer of rocks goes down 6 meters deep.

Scientists believe it is the consequence of the movement of glaciers (冰川) about 10,000 years ago. At that time, ice covered the top of the mountains. As time went by, the ice turned into water. Seeing the amazing river is a great experience. The best way to experience this natural wonder is from above. Come and visit it when you come to Russia.
