You may think that having less water is related to having less rain, but it is now a problem in southern China, an area in which it rains often. 

In December 2021, the government said that Shenzhen was facing its most serious water shortage (短缺) ever. Other cities in the southern part of China, like Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming "thirsty" despite (尽管) having more rain and being close to more rivers and lakes. The Paper reported. So why are they still short on water?

In these big cities, populations(人口) are growing fast. As a result, people and factories need more water. 

Weather change is making the water problem worse. Most cities in Guangdong Province depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up. 

Water pollution also makes it harder to get clean drinking water. Factories and farms don't use water well. Some cities have enough rain but don't have big lakes or reservoirs (水库) to store water, so the water goes out into the sea. 

But there is a hidden water resource right under our feet. That's "groundwater". We can't see it. However, it plays an important role in our lives. About 98 percent of Earth's fresh water is groundwater. It is 60 times as plentiful (丰富的) as the fresh water in lakes and rivers. But in many places, people overuse and pollute groundwater. We should pay more attention to this hidden water resource (资源). 

Jianbing is a famous Chinese street snack. But now its name goes outside

Potatoes are common in our daily lives. But they have an interesting history in China. 

Potatoes come to China from South America in the late Ming Dynasty(朝代). At that time, not many people buy them. They are so special and people don't know how to make them into dishes. But as time goes by, people find it is easy to grow potatoes. This is because potatoes can bear hard growing conditions(状况). So more farmers start growing potatoes. And people know more and more ways of cooking potatoes. At first, they find roasted potatoes taste quite good with a little salt. Then they create(创造) more dishes like Stewed Beef with Potatoes and Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes. But people don't just grow potatoes for their taste. Potatoes can give them much energy, so they won't feel hungry too early after eating them. 

And here is another story about potatoes. In the Qing Dynasty, some villagers think potatoes are unhealthy. So an official(官员) cooks and eats potatoes in front of them. Then many villagers try potatoes too. In this way, he encourages more people to grow potatoes. 

Today, potatoes are welcome all over China. And you can find them in many different dishes. 

Summer holiday is coming, but you should know the following to stay safe. Stay in when the thunderstorm is coming. Cut off the power in the house because lightning can travel through power lines(电线). And stay away from windows. If you are outside, look for a house quickly. Don't get close to trees. 

It's dangerous because they can attract(吸引) lightning easily. When there isn't lightning for half an hour, you can go out.

When you meet a hailstorm(冰雹), move inside fast. And don't stay near the windows because they're easy to break. If you can't find any houses, cover your head with your arms, bag, jacket, or anything thick. When you are in a car, park it away from trees and power lines. Stay inside the car. Wait about 15 minutes before going outside after the hailstorm.
