Do good manners still matter(重要) today? Some people believe good manners are still important in modern life. However, others think they are old-fashioned and unnecessary.

Good manners are rules about how people should behave well around others. A researcher once called them"traffic lights for life". Just as traffic lights help cars move safely, good manners help people get along with one another in daily life.

However, good manners are not always the same everywhere. In some countries, making sounds while eating may show that people enjoy the meal, but in others, it is considered rude.Manners also change over time. About 100 years ago, children in some places were expected to stay quiet when adults were talking. Today, young people are encouraged to share their ideas at school and in society.

Kind words and polite behaviour cost nothing, but they can make the world warmer. Manners can also help keep people healthy. For example, covering your mouth when you cough and keeping dirty feet off seats are not only polite, but also useful in stopping the spread of germs (细菌传播).

Still, some people do not agree. They say that some manners are just old rules. For example,lots of manners, such as not putting elbows (手肘) on tables, do not make sense and are out of date. They are no more needed now. They believe people should be honest and behave naturally,as long as they are kind to others.

In fact, manners do not have to stay the same forever. They can change with time and culture. But I think their real purpose should not change: to make people feel respected, safe and comfortable. That is why good manners still matter in modern life.

In 1969, a U. S. environmentalist named Gaylord Nelson had an idea. He was worried about pollution, oil leaks (泄露), and the loss of wild places. He suggested a special day for people to talk about environmental problems and help more people understand them. As a result, the first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970.

Today, it is celebrated on April 22 every year by over one billion people. It is a day to learn about the natural world, understand the environmental problems, and take action to protect the Earth. Here are some simple ways to take part and encourage others to do the same.

First of all, let's start at home. Instead of driving cars, it's better to ride a bike or walk to your destination(目的地) as much as possible. Also, try to reduce the amount of waste by asking your family members to use reusable bottles, lunch boxes and shopping bags. Remember to recycle cans, paper, batteries, and cardboard boxes instead of throwing them away.

Growing green plants is another good way to care for the earth. Their flowers and fruits provide food for local wildlife, while their branches and leaves offer shelter and shade. Some families also grow vegetables in their gardens, which helps reduce pollution because the food does not need to travel far.

Finally, many people can take part in special activities such as beach cleanups, nature walks and environmental talks. These activities encourage more people to care about the planet and work together to protect it.

Gaylord Nelson's simple idea still inspires (激励) people today. Whether you plant a tree,recycle, or join a cleanup, you are carrying on the spirit of the first Earth Day.

After Gulliver lived in Lilliput for some time, the king and Lilliputians began to trust him.At first, the little people were afraid of this"Man-Mountain", but later they found that Gulliver was gentle and friendly. Gulliver also tried to follow their rules carefully. He was big and strong,but he never used his power to hurt others.

Gulliver listened carefully. He wanted to help Lilliput, but he did not want to kill anyone.After thinking for a while, he came up with a clever plan. He asked the king for some strong ropes and hooks. Then he walked slowly into the sea. The water was very deep for the little people, but it only reached Gulliver's chest.

When Gulliver got near the enemy ships (敌船), the soldiers were frightened. Some of them were so scared that they shot arrows at his face and hands. The arrows hurt a little, butGulliver stayed calm. He tied the ropes to the ships one by one and pulled them across the sea. It was hard work, but Gulliver did not give up.

Before long, he brought all the enemy ships back to Lilliput. When the people saw the ships,they shouted with joy. The king was very pleased and thanked Gulliver again and again.

However, Gulliver did not feel proud. He was glad that he had helped Lilliput without hurting many people. From this experience, he learned an important lesson: real strength is not about hurting others. Sometimes, it means using one's power wisely and kindly.
