Parents are the first teachers in your life. They always love and help you. But sometimes you may have a fight with them. 

Enjoy life together. You should spend more time with your parents.  Go shopping together, read together or go to the movies together.

Show more care.  For example, you can make a meal for them. I completely believe it can make your parents happy.

 When you are in trouble or meet some upset things, you can ask your parents for help, they will tell you what to do with your problems.

When I was very young, my dad had the first telephone in our neighborhood. I still remember the shiny receiver in the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but I knew that a wonderful person lived inside it—her name was Information Please. She could give anybody's number and the right time.

One day, my mom was out. I hit my finger and it hurt a lot. No one was home to help me. So I thought of the telephone! I called her. A soft voice said, "Information Please." I cried and told her about my finger. She told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate. 

When my pet bird died, I called her and cried, "Why do birds sing so well and make everyone happy, but died at last?" She said softly, "Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in." Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her.

Years later, my plane stopped in Seattle. I called the operator (接线员) for help. To my surprise, Sally answered! I asked her to spell "fix", just like when I was little. She laughed and said my calls made her happy all day— she had no kids, so she hoped to talk with me.

Three months later, I called again. A different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: "Tell Paul there are other worlds to sing in. He'll understand."

Work is a necessary and important part of our daily lives. It is not just a way to make money; it offers much more than financial (财务的) benefits. Work provides us with a strong sense of purpose and direction. It helps us feel that we are useful and valued members of society.

When we work, we learn new skills and improve our abilities. We also get to meet different people, build relationships, and make good friends. This social act makes our lives richer and more interesting. Moreover, work can bring us great happiness and deep satisfaction. For example, when we successfully finish a difficult task or project, we feel a strong sense of pride and personal achievement.

As a teenager, I have experienced many growing pains. I often argue with my mother about my after-school activities. She wants me to study all the time, but I want to play basketball with my friends. I feel upset and don't even want to talk with her.

One day, my teacher talked with me and told me that my mother's strictness is full of love. She just hopes I can study hard and have a good future. Then I tried to communicate with my mother patiently. I told her I would finish my homework first, then play basketball for an hour. To my surprise, she agreed with me.

Now I know that communication is the key to solving growing pains. As we grow up, we should learn to understand our parents and talk with them more. In this way, we can turn growing pains into growing gains.

When Juan Sala was young, he lived near a beach. During his summer holidays, he would spend all day swimming in the sea. In the evenings, he loved watching programmes about underwater adventures. He even dreamed of filming and studying fish under the sea. But he didn't start to do that until he was in his twenties. Juan described a normal workday on his 45-metre boat:

American Cruise (航行) Lines: Columbia & Snake Rivers Journey

The wildfire in Los Angeles burned Charlotte Tragos's home to the ground. Marks of her childhood heights on the kitchen wall, family treasures in cupboards, and her family's photos were all gone.

"It was a pretty special house," said Tragos, who ran away with her parents, her younger sister and their three dogs when the fire broke out on January 7th, 2025. All the teenager took with her was her high school diploma (毕业证书).

A few days after the fire, Tragos's friend shared her a video: a L.A. artist offering to create, for free, watercolor paintings of people's homes before they were burnt. Tragos contacted the artist, Jordan Heber, asking if she could paint Tragos's home. "I want to do it as a surprise to my family," she wrote. Tragos sent a photo to Heber, who completed a painting of Tragos's home in three days. "A home is more than just a house where we keep our things," said Heber.

Heber works as a designer and paints in her free time, usually charging $300 to $400 for a house drawing. After the fire began, Heber kept thinking about how she could help. Seeing another local artist offering free house drawings, she was encouraged. "This will be my way to help," said Heber.

She posted her offer on social media, and messages poured in. Heber has painted over fifty houses, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose family home was also destroyed.

"It was a place you never wanted to leave," said Wineberg. When the fire came, he escaped with his two dogs, taking only a blanket. "Heber's painting means the world to me. I've lost almost everything, but a piece like this—something that brings back what ‘home' meant—gives me strength."

Heber is glad that people find her paintings meaningful, saying, "Hopefully it encourages others to use their talents to help people."

You might think that a map is nothing more than a drawing of an area, such as a city or a country. Maps are important tools to make sure we don't get lost and they also tell us how humans think, feel and live.

The history of maps goes back more than 5,000 years. The earliest surviving map of the world is an earth tablet (碑) from Babylon. It shows Babylon in the centre, the River Euphrates and the oceans and mountains nearby.

The people of ancient Greece and the Romans made maps. However, it was Ptolemy, an Egyptian scientist, changed them forever. He marked about 10,000 places by creating a system. It used lines called latitude and longitude which are still used today to mark areas on a map.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, maps made in Europe became more about storytelling. They were often made in monasteries (修道院) and mapmakers put what was most important to them at the centre on the map.

Between the 15th and 17th centuries, new ideas and inventions were changing the world. Ships were crossing oceans and countries were building new empires, so accurate (准确的) maps appeared. Mapmakers were influenced by Ptolemy's ideas and the invention of printing meant the monasteries were not the only places that could produce maps.

Today, the development of technology has made maps more helpful than ever. However, some experts worry that our blind trust in technology means we are losing our natural sense of direction. There have been reports of people driving into lakes, deserts or other countries by mistake after following GPS. Perhaps we're no smarter than the people in Babylon after all.

Imagine a cute cat doll that can talk to you with lively looks, a smart globe that introduces local cultures wherever you tap, or a little robot ready for a game of chess. These are not common toys — they use artificial intelligence (AI) to listen and act. Such "smart companions (陪伴者)" are becoming popular around the world.

China's AI toy market is expected to reach 29 billion yuan this year. Big international companies like Mattel and OpenAI are also planning to bring out AI products for kids. Experts say these toys are created to provide support and companionship. By building a close relationship with users, they are leading a new trend (潮流).

"More and more young people are willing to pay for warmth and companionship, and AI companionship is a perfect example," said Sun Zhaozhi, CEO of a Shanghai AI toy company.

Besides support, AI toys might change how children learn and grow. They can act like private teachers, help to make personal study plans and play fun games with kids.

However, there are risks. AI might sometimes give unsafe suggestions. For example, one AI teddy bear told researchers where to find dangerous things. There are also worries about privacy, as these toys could collect personal information.

Another problem is that AI companions might only say what users want to hear. This could make it harder for young users to deal with real-world relationships.
