17、There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was two years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the fridge. But the bottle was too slippery (滑的) that he dropped it. The milk was running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him or punishing him, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?" So he did.
Then his mother said, "This was a failed experiment in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let's go out to the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it."
He learnt that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.
The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid of making mistakes. The same goes for scientific experiments. Even if an experiment doesn't "work", we can still learn something valuable from it.
A. What a wonderful lesson!
B. I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk.
C. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together.
D. It took them much time to clean up the floor.

18、In September, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned from spending over a year in space. His record and his efforts were celebrated. But questions remained about a tomato that had gone missing while he was in space. Now, the mystery tomato has been found.
In his time on the International Space Station (ISS), Mr. Rubio, along with other astronauts, worked on several experiments, one of which aimed to grow tomatoes in a soil-free environment using only air and water. The goal of the experiment was to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables to help feed astronauts on long trips through space. When the plant finally produced tomatoes, all of the astronauts on board the ISS got to taste them. Except Mr. Rubio. He had lost his tomato.
Mr. Rubio had put the tomato in a plastic bag, and had brought it out to show to some students who were on a video call. Mr. Rubio believed that he had used Velcro (魔术贴) to attach the bag to part of the ISS. But when he came back afterward, he found that the bag was gone.
Because there is so little gravity on the ISS, things, that are not attached can simply float away. Mr. Rubio always believed that was what had happened to the tomato. But the other members of the ISS crew enjoyed teasing Mr. Rubio about the missing tomato. They claimed that he ate it, but just didn't want to admit it. It became a joke among the astronauts.
Mr, Rubio says he spent many hours looking for the tomato. But his search came up empty. He believed that the tomato had dried out, and someone else had found it and threw it away. But the joking about the tomato continued even after Mr. Rubio returned to Earth. Reporters asked him about it. One of P NASA's leaders even jokingly asked Mr. Rubio if he'd eaten the tomato. "I wish I had at this point," he replied, "because I think everybody thinks I did."
Last week, the mystery was solved, in a video call with NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli. She said she could now clear Mr, Rubio's name: "We found the tomato," she announced. NASA has not said where the crew found the tomato or what it looked like when it was finally discovered.
(1)、What is the aim of the tomato-growing experiment?A、To see how air and water influence the growth of tomatoes. B、To help astronauts learn the skill of growing fruits and vegetables. C、To develop a method for a continuous food supply for long space travel. D、To compare the taste of tomatoes grown in space and those grown on Earth.(2)、What did Mr. Rubio do with the tomato before realizing it was missing?A、He put it near a bag of Velcro. B、He used it as part of an experiment. C、He shared it with other astronauts on the ISS. D、He presented it to students during a video call.(3)、What does the underlined word "teasing" in paragraph 4 probably mean?A、Criticizing. B、Kidding. C、Helping. D、Admiring.(4)、What can we learn from the last paragraph?A、The missing tomato was found by Jasmin Moghbeli. B、Moghbeli described what the tomato looked like in her call. C、Mr. Rubio was proven not to have eaten the missing tomato. D、The tomato's disappearance was a joke played by the ISS crew.(5)、What is the best title for the passage?A、Astronauts' Life in Space Station B、Unusual Experiments in Space Station C、Rubio's Record-Breaking Space Mission D、Space Station's Lost and Found: A Tomato Tale -
19、On Douyin, a program about studying science books has gained millions of views and attracted nearly 90,000 viewers in just two years. Every week, famous scientists and scholars are invited to the program to share their understanding of science books.
In the past, people preferred to read literary classics. However, today, China values sci-tech innovation (科技创新), and the country's rapid sci-tech development has led to people's growing interest in scientific literature.
This year, Beijing World Publishing Company will release (发行) a series of popular astronomy books that will cover topics such as the moon and Mars. "The public needs books to have a better understanding of the country's scientific achievements," says Xu Guoqiang, the deputy editor-in-chief of the company.
Xu says that the development of popular science and the reading of scientific books depends on scientific literacy (科学素养). The latest data shows that 14.1 percent of people were scientifically literate in 2023, and the country hopes to raise that to 25 percent by 2035.
Foreign science books have long been popular in our country's market. One of them is A Brief History of Time. The book has never left China's Top 10 list of popular science books since it was introduced. Well-known Chinese science books include One Hundred Thousand Whys and Little Smarty Travels to the Future and so on.
"However, the problem is that there is still a shortage of Chinese science books and books that can spark (激发) readers' intelligence and curiosity," Xu says.
Wang Dapeng, a member of the China Research Institute for Science Popularization, agrees with Xu. "We need more ways to encourage scientists to take part, such as through funding projects (资助项目). It may also be helpful to provide training for science writers to improve their writing skills," he says.
