My New Friend at School

Last month, a new girl joined our class. Her name is Sarah. She came from Canada, and she looked a little nervous on her first day. I wanted to be her friend, so I walked up to her and said, "Hello! I'm Li Mei. Welcome to our class. " Sarah smiled and said, "Thank you! I'm Sarah. I'm not used to the new school yet. "

Now, Sarah is not nervous anymore. She has made many friends in our class, but she still says I'm her first friend here. I feel happy to help her. This experience tells me that making friends is easy—all you need to do is be friendly and take the first step.

A Letter to My Best Friend

Dear Lily, 

Hi! How are you? I miss you so much. I want (tell) you about my new school life, but I also want to say thank you—you were such a great friend to me. 

When I first moved to your school, I was very shy. I didn't know anyone, and I was afraid to talk. But you walked up to me and said, "Hi! I'm Lily. Let's be friends. " That day, I felt so happy. You (help) me learn the school rules, and you introduced me to your other friends. We (play) together every break time—we jumped rope and played hide-and-seek. Those were such fun times!

My Friendship with Mia

Mia is my best friend. We met in Grade 6 when she moved to my school. At first, I was shy to talk to her, but she smiled at me and said, "Hi! I'm Mia. Do you want to sit together at lunch?" That small act of kindness started our friendship. 

Mia is from France, so she speaks both French and English. She often 1 me French words, and I teach her Chinese. We practice every day—now I can say "Bonjour" (hello) and "Merci" (thank you) in French, and she can say "Ni hao" and "Xiexie" in Chinese. This 2 our friendship closer—we learn from each other.

How to Make Friends with a New Classmate

Making friends with a new classmate can be easy if you follow these simple steps. It helps them feel welcome and builds a strong friendship. 

First, greet them warmly on their first day.  A smile and a simple "Hello! I'm [your name]. Welcome to our class!" can make them feel less nervous. Don't forget to ask their name—this shows you care about them. 

Second, find common interests.  For example, if they say they like playing basketball, you can say "I like basketball too! Let's play together after school. " Common interests help you start conversations and spend time together. 

Third, help them with small things.  If they don't know where the library is, show them. If they forget their pencil, lend them yours. Small helps make them feel supported and trusted. 

Fourth, invite them to join your group.  When the class has group work or plays games, ask them to join your group. This helps them make more friends and feel part of the class. 

Finally, be patient. It may take time for them to open up. Keep being kind and friendly, and soon you'll become good friends.

How to Design Your Name Card

a. Size & Material:

◦Use A5 paper (14. 8×21 cm)—no bigger or smaller. 

◦You can use colored paper, markers, stickers, or even small photos (print or draw). 

b. Must-Include Content (5 points total):

◦Friend's full name (1 point)

◦1-2 key looks/character traits (e. g. , "tall, helpful") (1 point)

◦Friend's favorite hobby + how often they do it (e. g. , "likes reading—every weekend") (1 point)

◦A short friendship quote (e. g. , "We help each other grow") (1 point)

◦Your signature (to show it's from you) (1 point)

c. Creativity Tips:

◦Draw small pictures related to your friend's hobby (e. g. , a book if they like reading). 

◦Use your friend's favorite colors for the card. 

◦Write neatly—messy writing will lose points.
