Zhao Yang,  Chinese girl, studies in Strasbourg, France. She becomes famous for (play) the pipa in the streets of Strasbourg. 

Zhao started playing the pipa  the age of four and now shares her music with people from all over the world. She began performing in the streets for a video project and (find) that many people enjoyed her music. Then Zhao started to play the pipa regularly in the streets of France in her free time. 

Zhao not only plays classical pipa music but also wants to try new  (way) to play the pipa. In 2023, she played a song from a French opera  it was her first time mixing the pipa playing with modern music. After that, she started to use bass guitar methods in her pipa playing for rock and pop music. Zhao thinks that playing the pipa in different styles can make the pipa even  (popular) and give it new life. 

Zhao says, "People really pay attention to my shows, and it's amazing to see (they) enjoying the music and learning about our culture. " Zhao believes that her music can change people see Chinese culture. She wants to show that the pipa can  (use) in many different kinds of music, not just traditional Chinese music. 

Keeping Healthy— Stories from Around the World

Running for fun     Run in your (空闲的) time! It helps you to keep healthy. Millions of people run several days a week and take an active part in races. To (支持) others, some runners join the sport and do something (有帮助的). Last autumn in Tokyo, the (首都) of Japan, some runners wore crazy costumes(服装) and ra n a full marathon to collect money for charity(慈善). 

A beautiful morning in a park      Taijiquan is a traditional sport (广泛地) spread in China. You will see big groups of people doing taijiquan in (公开的) places such as parks and squares(广场). These slow movements of the arms and legs are very good for your health. Mr. Lee, a doctor, often shares his experience, saying that doing taijiquan helps him overcome stress and feel  (放松的). 

Ice swimming (推断;料想) you are somewhere in Russia or Finland in winter, and it's — 15℃outside. Would you (更喜欢) to see a film or to go for a swim in a pool on a fine Saturday afternoon? Not many of our readers would choose to swim in such (低的) temperature. But in some countries, ice swimming has been popular for almost 200 years. Some people say it can help strengthen the body. But you have to have the courage to try it and it's only for people who are already fit and healthy!

Chinese paper cutting is an amazing traditional art. There are  pictures, like flowers, animals and characters. Artists are  proud of their skills. Most traditional art requires painting skills  paper cutting, which focuses on the art of cutting and folding paper. The earliest paper cutting dates back to the 4th century in China. Artists different forms of paper cutting in the last few centuries. Now, it's popular around the world, showing the  of Chinese culture. 

Mary always loved music. Her 1 for music started when she was a little girl. And when she was a teenager, she knew that the only instrument that could 2 move her heart was the piano. Growing up 3 one, she had to play on the old piano at her school. She was not born to be a musical talent. Her first few pieces(作品) were not so 4 . They were always out of tune(跑调)and sometimes teenagers of her age laughed at her, 5 Mary didn't care. To her, making 6 was all that mattered.

The head thinks the tradition is the same as the art of Neapolitan pizza(那不勒斯比萨) making and the grass cutting competition in other countries. He said, ""

The head himself likes to spend summer evenings in front of his house. He thinks the tradition is meaningful in several ways. Firstly, it keeps people away from the Internet. Then, it's good for the environment when people get out of their houses and turn off their air-conditioners(空调) for a few hours.  They share the day's experience, or talk about their ideas about the latest news. 

"I haven't heard villagers say any bad words about it, " the head said. "Every time they appear at their front steps, they show their action to save the tradition. "

What Chinese customs do you think should be on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage?

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music boosts certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples. 

Music and hearing

A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument(乐器) can improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly. 

"Musicians hear better, " says Kraus, "because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. "Think about violinists in an orchestra(管弦乐队). When the violinists play in a group, they hear their own instruments and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore(忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to pay attention to certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke patients(中风患者). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? Music seems to activate(使运作) different parts of the brain, including the damaged(被损坏的) parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again. 

Understanding the results

Music improves concentration(专注), memory, listening skills, speaking skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. "Playing an instrument or singing, " says Nina Kraus, "can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp(敏锐的) as we get older. ""Music, " she adds, "is not only enjoyable, but it is also good for us in many other ways. "

On April 26th, 2022, a 72-year-old Italian hiker Vienna Cammarota started her long journey from Venice(威尼斯) to China on foot. This meant she would travel about 22, 000 kilometers and walk through 15 countries. The journey would be full of challenges, but she wasn't afraid. Cammarota carried only a simple backpack. "I also have a lot of passion(热情) with me, " she said. On August29th, 2024, she finally set foot on China. 

Cammarota got the idea from Marco Polo, who traveled to China along the ancient Silk Road about 700 years ago. For Cammarota, her journey was more than following in Marco Polo's footsteps. She also wanted to see the influence of the Silk Road on the countries along her way to China. 

Her interest in China began more than 20 years ago. A Chinese student stayed in her home and told her a lot about the country's rich culture. Now Cammarota plans to spend two years in China after she arrived here. She will visit key stops along the ancient Silk Road, including Kashgar, Dunhuang and the historic city of Xi'an. She also wants to visit Suzhou. The city was described as the"Venice of the East" by Marco Polo. 

"I often call myself an ambassador(大使) of cultural exchange and a modern-day Marco Polo, "Cammarota said. "By sharing my experiences, I hope my travel will help people in the West see the true beauty of China. I want people to know about the Silk Road. " She also said, "I want to send a message to women my age: It's never too late to follow your dreams. "

By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, chabaixi(茶百戏), an ancient Chinese tea trick showed in a TV drama, has interested the public for its similarity with modern latte art(咖啡拉花艺术). However, ten years ago, this special technique was close to disappearing completely. 

Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains. There are mainly four steps, from grinding(碾碎) tea for fine powder, to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick froth(泡沫), and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped(搅打起泡沫的) tea, it turns into a white color and disappears in 20 minutes. 

"Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in China. The importance of chabaixi is not only that this technique is unique in the world, but also it gives us a window into people's lifestyle in the Song Dynasty, " Zhang Zhifeng, a practitioner of chabaixi, said. 

Before chabaixi was discovered by TV audiences, the technique was listed as part of China'sIntangible Cultural Heritage(非物质文化遗产) in 2017, after it was recovered by Zhang Zhifeng. He started researching the origins of chabaizi in the 1980s and brought the technique back in 2009. Zhang spent nearly 30 years studying and researching the origins and making of tea, but for him it was all worthwhile. 

"This technique is key to the tea culture of the Song Dynasty, and it would be a shame to let it disappear. This technique must be passed on to the next generations so that they can understand its history, " Zhang said.

Never let failures stop you from trying again. 

When a man was passing  some elephants, he suddenly stopped. He felt shocked, because these huge animals(hold) only by a small rope(绳子). No chains(链子), no cages. It was clear that the elephants could break their rope at any time,  for some reason, they did not. He saw a trainer nearby and asked  the elephants just stood there and made no effort to get away. "Well, "the trainer answered (polite), "when they were very young and much smaller, we usually used  same rope to keep them from running away. At that age, it's enough to hold them. As the elephants grow up, they still believe that they cannot break the rope to run away. So they never try to break free again. "

It made the man really (surprise). Just because they believed they couldn't, the elephants were stuck(困住) right where they were, though they could (break) free whenever they wanted. 

How many of us go through life like the elephants? Failure is one of the (secret)to success. If we fail once, it doesn't mean we can never succeed.  We are not supposed(give) up trying when we meet failures in life. 

Here's an amazing story. Back in 1937, Amelia Earhart was one of the most famous (woman) in the world. She was a writer and fashion designer, but most of all, she was  pioneering pilot. Every time she landed her plane, she was met by huge crowds wanting (see) her and congratulate her. 

That year, Amelia decided she would go one step further and on June 1st, together her partner Fred Noonan, Amelia set off from Miami in her plane, which would be her (big) but final adventure(冒险). The journey was going (good)at first, but on July 2nd, the plane Amelia and Fred flew disappeared  they were heading towards Howland Island. The next day, the world awoke to the news that Amelia and Fred had been (miss) into thin air. 

After a huge search, no sign of the plane was ever (find). Over the years, many ideas have developed about  might happen to the plane. One was that Amelia might land her plane on a tiny island, not far from Howland Island. Scientists have tried a lot but it's still a mystery. 

Every day, Metro Line 4 in Chongqing is crowded with elderly people carrying all (kind) of vegetables. Much of the produce is carried in big bamboo baskets on (they) backs. This metro line(call) the"Basket Special". 

Recently, "The Basketball Special" has been  hot topic online. Some people want stricter rules during rush hours. They say that the big baskets take up too much space and can cause problems. However, the subway staff go out of their way(help) them. 

Metro Line 4 connects Shichuan Township(石船镇) to the city center. Farmers in the town used to (sell) their produce locally.  since the line opened, they've started selling it in the city instead. This helps them make more money  a shorter time. 

To help these farmers, the subway staff along the line start checking tickets five minutes earlier, teach farmers how to use escalators and guide them to enter the station(quick) to make sure other passengers won't be bothered. Many people ask  they do so much extra work for these elderly farmers. Their answer is simple: All hard-working people deserve our respect. 

My name is Teapot, and I'm sitting on a lovely shelf in my mom's living room. She put me here before but has never used me (pour) tea. She says I'm different because I'm a Jellycat teapot. 

A month ago, I was sitting in Jellycat Cafe with my best friends— Teacup, Bear and Latte. Every day, we (see) lots of people line up in our cafe. Most of them were  (adult) and they looked like they were on top of the world  they picked up their own Jellycat. 

One day, my mom came and told the cashier that she wanted  teapot. The cashier brought me out from under the counter. " This is a teapot  has a very nice shine, " she said. 

" But this sweetie is fragile, so don't let him bump into hard things, or he'll get hurt. " Then I was (careful) packed up in paper, just like all my friends here. Soon, Bear(take) by a young lady, too. 

After we got home, a friend of my mom's told her that she had spent 1, 000 yuan in our café. She thought we were so cute that it was worth every penny, and our café's service was wonderful. But I think there's a much (deep) reason: Every day, when my mom comes home late at night, she looks very tired. But every time she holds me  her arms, a smile lights up her face. Maybe this is the emotional support people talk about at the café. 

Thirty years ago, China started to build its own navigation satellite system(卫星导航系统)， Beidou. It took  (it) name from the Big Dipper stars, which are the guiding light for people around the world. 

In 1994, China (begin) making the Beidou Navigation Satellite System(BDS). It's a lot safer than before. After over 20 years of hard work, Beidou (complete) the global network so far. This achievement placed China among the group of (country)with their own global navigation network. The US, Russia  the European Union are the other three. 

Beidou does not just show  you are. Although there's no signal or the Internet, Beidou can also receive your texts (successful). For example, you can use it(send) messages to others in a deep mountain. The Beidou system has played important role in disaster prevention and response(防震救灾). The BDS even provides information  farmers, which makes farming smarter.
