Last week, a terrible earthquake happened in Haiti. It made Alice and her friends think much it. They asked their science teacher, Mr. Guilton, "What makes the earth shake?"

Mr. Guilton explained it as (simple) as he could. He said, "Inside of the earth, there are big (piece) of rock that are slowly moving all of the time. When two big ones hit each other, they make the earth shake. "

Then, he (tell) the class that many people all over the world lived in fear of earthquakes. And was not easy for people to find out the causes of earthquakes. Long ago, people believed earthquakes (cause) by many different things. In India, people believed that four big elephants held up the earth. The elephants stood on an even (big) turtle. The turtle stood on a huge snake.  one of these animals moved, the earth would shake. In Africa, people believed the earth was held up by ugly giant. When the giant put down the earth (give) his wife a hug, the earth would shake, causing an earthquake. 

Today, we know the true cause of earthquakes. But that doesn't make them any less scary or dangerous. 

Long ago there lived two brothers, John and Eric. They lived a (贫穷的) life on a farm. One day, John heard of a kingdom and there wasn't any onions! John thought, "It's a good (机会) for me. If I sell them onions, they will pay me a lot of money!"

John went to the kingdom and asked to meet the king(国王). He told the king about the onions and the king expressed curiosity. He asked John to  (把······准备好) food with onions for a party. John [完成(困难的事)] to cook many dishes with onions. The king invited many guests to  (参加) the party and try the food. Everyone liked the taste of onions! The king said to John, "These onions are the most (贵重的) thing in my kingdom. In return for them, I will give you their equal weight(同等重量) of gold. "

John became very rich. Eric wanted gold, too. He asked John (是否) this kingdom had garlic(大蒜) or not. John thought and said, "Actually, they don't have any garlic. "

So Eric traveled to the kingdom and visited the king. He (制作) a lot of delicious dishes with garlic. The king liked garlic very much and said, "I will give you its equal weight of the most precious(宝贵的) thing in my kingdom. " Eric was (兴奋的) to hear that. However, all his excitement was gone when he found he received (没有什么)but onions!

Cell phones are useful in our daily lives. But you should be  not to be a noisy phone user. You are supposed to control your own behavior. Here are a few rules. 

When you are in a public place and see a that says"Turn off your cell phone", don't use your phone. If you are allowed, speak  for a short time and try to keep away from other people. 

Pay attention!  on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. According traffic rules, drivers who talk on a cell phone while driving will get an offence on their licenses. 

There was a businessman who was deep in debt(债务) and could see no way out. He sat on a park bench, 1 in his hands. 

Suddenly, someone appeared before him. He looked up and found a clean-looking old man. "I can see that 2 is troubling you, " he said. After listening to the businessman's story, the old man wrote out a check(支票), and put it in his hand, saying, "3 it and pay me back here exactly one year from today. " Then he turned and disappeared as 4 as he had come.

Recently, outdoor adventures(户外探险) have gained a lot of popularity. Inspired by the fantastic photos and videos online, many beginners set out without understanding the risks involved. They might get lost in forests or be caught in a storm. So, how can we reduce the risks of outdoor sports?

 Before going hiking, you need to research the route(路线) and weather conditions. Then, choose a suitable time and route instead of some wild or dangerous spots. 

 Prepare the right clothing like hats and gloves for staying warm and dry. High-energy food items like nuts or energy bars can prevent your sugar level from falling. 

 First-aid like treating wounds with bandages is important. Through training, you can take care of yourself as well as others if accidents happen. 

 You'd better find trustworthy partners and avoid stepping outside alone. Tell your friends and family about your route and the expected time of return, so they can reach you if needed. 

With careful planning and proper preparations, outdoor adventures can be full of surprises and unforgettable memories.

Have you and your friends ever argued about what color this dress is? Just wait a minute before you start calling each other"color-blind". According to USA Today, "no one is wrong, and no one is right", because there is real science behind why we see it differently, and having eyesight problems is not part of it. 

To make it clear, for example, the dress itself is black and blue. However, in a survey taken by a social media website, tens of thousands of people think the dress is"white and gold". Isn't that strange?

Over millions of years, human beings have developed a certain way to tell the true color about something even if the lighting conditions keep changing. Just imagine looking at your white shirt during a golden sunset or under a purple light. Its color actually changes but you just know that it's white, don't you?

This is because your brain understands how the light is influencing the color of your shirt, and so you can tell it is white. Scientists call this"color constancy(恒定)". 

And here is where the disagreements begin. When they see the image, someone thinks that the lighting in the room is very poor, so the dress must have very bright colors, like white and gold. Some, however, think the opposite: The lighting is very strong, so the dress must be in darker colors to look the way it does in the picture. 

So, there is no need to question your eyesight if you see the dress as white and gold, and those who see it as blue and black should not be overjoyed, either. This is nothing more than an optical illusion(视错觉). And no one gets serious about those, do they?

You may sometimes wonder if rules were made to keep you from having fun and to tell you what to do. But what if we had no rules at all? Nobody would tell you what to do ever again! Sounds great, right? Well, let's see what it would be like to live in a world without rules. You just might change your mind!

A Strange Morning

Let's start at home. When your alarm clock goes off, you have no reason to hurry. Without rules you don't have to go to school. Finally, you go downstairs and find your little brother eating cookies in the kitchen. Since there are no rules, you can have cookies for breakfast! In this new world, you will not have to brush your teeth anymore. Of course, the next time you see a dentist, you may have a cavity(龋洞). 

A Community out of Control

Now, you step outside. You decide to go to the playground because there's no law(法规) saying you have to go to school. On the playground, rubbish is everywhere. As government services are gone, nobody takes care of the playground. There are also no more traffic laws, so cars can be driven freely. Without crossing guards, there is no one to help you cross the street safely. 

Now think about trying to do all the other things you love. Want to go to the beach? The lifeguards will not be there to keep you safe. Want to play soccer in the park? The local governments are not around to protect the fields there, so you will probably not find a safe and clean place to play. 

Back to reality

Thankfully, that form of our world isn't real. Our government has made laws to keep us safe. Community workers help keep everything in order. Government agencies(机构) make sure the air and water are clean and free from pollution. Without rules,____. 

Bobi was a dog from Portugal(葡萄牙). When he and his three brothers were born in the family's woodshed(柴房), Costa's father decided to throw the four little baby dogs away since they already had too many animals at home. Costa, the little boy, was really sad. He thought all the puppies had been buried(埋藏) by his father. However, a few days later, he surprisingly found Bobi alive, hidden in a pile of logs(一堆木块) in the woodshed. Costa jumped up and down with joy when he had Bobi back. 

Bobi had some simple living habits. He got up with Costa in the morning and went to bed with Costa at night. He had meals with Costa every day and ate what Costa had for meals. What's more, he always had a nap after meal. It was a must. Bobi lived in a calm, peaceful and very"sociable"environment. After naps, Bobi always walked around freely in the forests, and farmland nearby, without a chain(链条). What's more, he usually had four cat friends to hang around with! However, as Bobi grew older, he became less energetic and active. He had difficulty walking and sometimes ran into objects as his eyesight got worse. But doctors said he was doing well for such an old age. 

Bobi lived a long life, more than twice as long as normal dogs do. He celebrated his 31st birthday on May 11th, 2023 and passed away on October 20th, aged 31 years and 165 days. That made him the world's oldest dog in history, Guinness World Records(GWR) said. People often ask Costa how Bobi could live such a long life. Costa always answered, "If he spoke, only he could explain this success. But his simple daily habits and the peaceful and sociable environment he lived in are two important reasons for his long life. "

Yang Liu, a girl from northern Guizhou, is an inheritor（继承人） of bamboo drifting（独竹漂）, an intangible cultural heritage（非物质文化遗产） in her hometown. Bamboo drifting has a （历史） of about 2, 000 years. In ancient times, to buy （产品） on the other side of rivers, people invented bamboo drifting to help the （当地） people to cross the rivers. Gradually, it developed into a sport. Yang didn't become successful（一夜之间）. She started to learn bamboo drifting at the age of seven. The girl was （天生） with a weak body. In order to make her strong, her grandmother （建议） her to learn bamboo drifting. At the beginning, Yang （很少） succeeded in controlling it. She fell into the water and got hurt again and again, but the girl didn't give up. After three years of hard practice, she finally [完成（困难的事）] to stand on the bamboo pole easily. But Yang didn't remain there. She put dance into bamboo drifting because of her dream of becoming a dancer when she was young. She went on to practice many difficult （行动） on the bamboo pole.

In recent years, Chinese kung fu has become more and more popular all over the world. It is one of our  cultures. Chinese kung fu is made up of different  that have developed over centuries in China,  taijiquan, Shaolin kung fu and qinggong. Kung fu helps improve people's health. , it's good for self-defense（自我防卫）. There has been a famous kung fu star who created Jeet Kune Do（截拳道） and spread it widely. His kung fu skills have been kept alive by many action actors. Now, kung fu is around the world.
