What makes you truly happy? Many people think fun activities can bring lasting happiness, yet this idea is not totally correct. Paul Dolan, the writer of Happiness by Design, states that real happiness depends on a "pleasure-purpose balance". Simply enjoying fun things is not enough, and we also need activities that give life meaning. 

We can easily tell what is joyful, but finding out what brings meaning takes deeper thinking. For example, most people will say that air pilots have jobs with clear purpose. They keep hundreds of people safe and fly all over the world. But they often have to stay in boring hotels and do the same actions hundreds of times. Those activities may seem meaningless and bring little joy. Just like everyone else, pilots need balance in their work and life to be happy. 

There are many ways to find a sense of purpose. You may feel encouraged when working for public interests, offering help to your team members or seeing yourselves make progress. As students, you can think of your "job" as studying and passing exams. It's easy to do well in subjects you enjoy. But if you find some subjects difficult, you can work in study groups to help and share knowledge with one another. Then the purpose becomes about helping the team. You can also set small goals and reward yourselves after finishing each task. 

In fact, the balance between pleasure and purpose never needs to be exactly half and half. Paul Dolan believes in "deciding, designing, doing". First, decide what things in life bring you pleasure or purpose—which is what your two lists are for. Then, don't just think about doing these activities, design your life so you do as many of them as possible. In this way, we can mix joy and meaning properly, and gain real happiness in study and daily life. 

The French writer Brillat-Savarin once wrote, "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are. " We usually simplify this famous sentence as "You are what you eat. " Most people now connect it to healthy eating habits, but in fact, Brillat-Savarin was talking about our personality, personal character and local culture when he came up with the idea. 

Chinese food is a perfect example to prove this view. Before I came to China, I only tried Chinese dishes in America, which were all changed to suit American people's tastes. The most popular one is General Tso's chicken, made of fried chicken covered with sweet sauce and flavoured with hot red peppers. It is not a real Chinese dish at all, so it tells us little about Chinese people. Instead, it clearly shows that Americans love bold, simple flavours and are brave enough to try new kinds of food. 

Later, I came to China and tried local food across different parts of the country. From Sichuan's special spicy peppercorns, Shandong's warm family-made dumplings, to Guangdong's fine morning dim sum, every local dish tells a wonderful story of its local culture. Wherever I went, I found food was as different as the local people, and Chinese people always show their warm friendship and kindness through food. 

At last, we can be sure that culture and dishes go hand in hand. The food local people eat tells us a lot about their daily life and traditional culture. If you don't experience one of them, you can never truly understand the other. 

A woman in New Brunswick is helping hundreds of children experience one of the most exciting parts of summer: the freedom of riding a bike with friends around the neighborhood. 

For the past 14 years, Krista Richard has been collecting donated bicycles, repairing them, and giving them away for free through her program, Bikes and Trikes for Everyone, in Moncton, Canada. Her simple and kind act has now helped thousands of kids get back outside, make friends, and create lasting memories. 

This year alone, Richard says she set a new personal record by giving away 88 bikes in a single day. Last year, more than 400 bikes found new homes. 

Richard believes bikes do much more than provide fun. She says they help bring neighborhoods back together. 

"As video games are getting popular, there's less social contact and people don't know who their neighbors are anymore," Richard told the CBC．

"But if you get a bunch of kids on their bikes, they will get to know each other. I think the more time they spend outside, the better they can get along. "

And the need continues to grow. More than 400 children are now on the waiting list. 

For Richard, the effort is all worth it when she sees the reaction on a child's face. 

"I had one little boy. . . he got on his bike and he didn't want to go home," she recalled. 

"Every time he went by me, he would say, ‘____'"

Aron Ralston is an American man who is interested in mountain climbing. As a mountain 1 , Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing 2 sports. There were many times when Aron almost 3 his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, he found 4 in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah.

Group words together

You can put words into different groups. Try to group them by topics, such as the topic of fruit. This helps you make a word map in your head. 

Use words a lot

The best way to remember a word is to use it. You can use the words when you talk with your classmates in English. The more you use them, the better you remember them.

A Fun Hiking Day

Last week, I went hiking with my classmates.

On a cold and windy winter afternoon, an old man walked into a quiet little village. The villagers here were simple and hard-working. But they were very shy and never shared their food or things. The whole village felt cold and lonely. 

To warm up the village, the old man came up with a good idea. He put a big pot on the open fire and put a clean stone (石头) into the boiling water. Soon, all villagers came and wanted to know what he was doing. 

The old man smiled and told everyone he was cooking magic stone soup. "This stone can make tasty soup," he said, "but it will be much better with some beans. " So a kind woman was happy to bring the beans. "I have some dried beans at home!" she said. Then the old man said a little meat could make the soup more delicious. A young boy quickly ran home for the meat. "My family has some pork!" he shouted. 

Little by little, more villagers joined in. A farmer brought a potato and sweet carrots, and a little girl took out some salt. Everyone gave just a little of their own food. The old man watched, waited and smiled happily. 

Finally, the soup was done and it tasted wonderful. All villagers sat together, talked and enjoyed the warm soup. 

The old man told the truth about why the soup was delicious. "The stone has no magic. The real magic is sharing. It brings us warmth and friendship. "

Do you love eating potatoes, one of the most popular vegetables in the world? And do you know how potatoes come into being (形成)?Scientists find something amazing: the tomato is the "mother" of the potato!

About 9 million years ago, an old kind of tomato plant and another plant called Etuberosum grew together and created a new plant. This new plant could grow a special part under the ground: the tuber. That is the potato we eat today!

Scientists have studied the genes (基因) of potatoes for years. They have found that potatoes get genes from both the tomato and Etuberosum. The tomato is like the mother, and Etuberosum is like the father. 

Why can potatoes grow tubers but tomatoes and Etuberosum cannot? Scientists say the genes from the two plants join in a new way. One gene from the tomato tells the potato plant when to start growing tubers. The other gene from Etuberosum helps the underground parts grow big and full of food. The two genes are very important. If there is only one of them, the potato cannot grow tubers. 

Thanks to their special genes, potatoes can live in dry or cold weather. They can keep water and food in their tubers. That is why they are now grown all over the world. Next time you eat a potato, remember—its mother is a tomato!

Millie Childs is an 11-year-old girl with dyslexia (阅读障碍) from the UK. Like many kids of her age, she loves reading fun stories, but reading is always hard for her. So she wanted to make a special pair of glasses for herself. 

When she was 8, she found coloured glasses could make reading much easier. But she didn't like carrying different pairs of glasses around every day. So she had an idea: why not make glasses with lenses (镜片) that can change colors?

She named her glasses "Rainbow Glasses". The lenses can change between red, green and blue. Users can choose the colour that works best for them. Later, Millie joined the "If You Were an Engineer" show. She worked with real engineers to turn her idea into a real thing. 

When talking about her glasses, Millie said, "Seeing it come true is incredible! I can hardly believe it! I hope more people with dyslexia can use my glasses. Helping them makes me so excited. "

Millie's glasses won a big prize in the Primary Engineer show. And do you know? About one in ten people in the UK has dyslexia. Maybe her small but clever glasses will help thousands of people read more easily soon!

English idioms (习语) are sometimes hard to understand, but they are fun to learn. 

I was always a weak kid and often felt sick when the weather changed. Because of this, I was never good at sports. In the P. E. class, 1 everyone else played games happily, I just stood by myself. Sometimes, I even felt a little 2 .

Finding Role Models Around Us

Sugar painting has a long history in China. It is both a dessert and  important traditional art. Now, young people  (become) more and more interested in it.

In the Ming Dynasty, people used sugar paintings as offerings (祭品) to gods. Sugar was made into tigers, lions, dragons and so on. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting  (get) more popular. A lot of  (worker) made a living by making and selling sugar paintings. Some old artists could finish a whole large painting all by  (them).
