Reporter: Why did you write the language books?

Alex White: Well, when I was living abroad as an exchange student,  Her passion for learning new languages inspired me to write books that make language learning fun.

Reporter: How were the people there?

Alex White:  Their kindness made me feel at home, and their daily conversations were full of language learning chances. These experiences became part of my writing material.

Reporter: 

Alex White: I studied linguistics(语言学) in college. It helped me understand language structures and how people learn new languages, which is really helpful for writing these books.

Alex White: Yes, there is. "The Magic of Language" by a famous linguist gave me the idea to write in a more story-based way. It showed me that language learning can be an adventure.

Plains wanderers are small, rare birds that live in grasslands. Unlike most birds,female plains wanderers are larger and stronger than males. Females take the lead in protecting their nests and babies from animals like foxes, while males often sit on the eggs to keep them warm. These birds are hard to find because their feathers blend into the grass, making them look like part of the landscape. Sadly, their numbers have been dropping because people are taking over their grassland homes for farms and cities.

To save them, scientists are using AI. The key is the birds' calls. Mother wanderers make soft sounds to talk to their chicks and warn about danger. These calls are quiet and easy to miss, but AI can hear them clearly. Scientists put microphones in the grasslands to record sounds all day and night. Then they put these recordings into a computer program. The AI learns to tell the wanderers' calls apart from other noises, like the wind blowing or insects chirping. This helps scientists find where the mother birds are and how many chicks they have.

"AI helps us monitor these birds without bothering them," says Dr. Lee, who leads the project. "We can find the most important areas for them and work to protect those places." Once, the AI helped scientists find a hidden nest with three baby birds.Without AI, they might not have found it. Thanks to this technology, there is new hope for these rare birds, showing that AI can be a powerful tool in saving wildlife.

It was very dark outside. I heated the food in the kitchen again, but my dad still didn't come back from the forest. He worked as a forest ranger(护林员). In the morning, he told me he would go to check the new small trees and that I didn't need to wait for him for dinner. But now, the wind was blowing hard and making a loud noise,like an animal. I stood at the door and called him, but he didn't answer.

Sun protection is more than just avoiding sunburn—— it's about keeping your skin healthy and feeling good all summer long. Here are some ways to protect yourself.

1. Use sunscreen(防晒霜) properly

Have you ever met people who are like the people I'll mention below? They have a very poor sense of (direct). When they are on the street, they cannot tell the east from the west or the south from the north. Certainly, they can ask others for help. But I have to say that asking the way in a(n) (polite) way can "give" people a bad feeling.

One day I was stopped by a man. He asked, "Where is the Friendship Building?" To be honest, I wasn't very happy about what he said. Why couldn't he ask in a more polite way? With a little bad impression made by his words, I didn't pay much attention the place where he wanted to go and told him a wrong answer. Just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building! But I had no time (turn) back and look for him.

"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. However, it's a question that often doesn't need an answer. People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. The excuse may be real, or not. The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, of finishing a talk, people don't say exactly that they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the game of language.

Giving Directions in Different Places

If you ask people of different countries "Could you tell me the way to the post office?", you will get different answers.

In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. The post office is across from the bus stop."

In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, "Go north two miles."

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, "Follow me." Sometimes if а person doesn't know the answer to your question, he or she, like а New Yorker, might say, "Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." Theу usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan! You might not understand a person's words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language.

Don't be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. Your place might be around the symbols.

Don't be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. We all do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city. But always make sure you can ask others for help!

If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with "could" "may" or "might". It's also possible to use "can" in some special situations. In the past, "can" was not used when asking for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use "Can you lend me…?" or "Can I have…?" In the USA, this is still considered to be wrong and "May I have…?" is preferred.

It's common to use "Could you lend/hand/give…?" Here are a lot you can use: "May/Can I borrow…?" "Could/Can you lend me…?" "May I have…?" "Could you hand/give me…?" Do not begin a sentence with "please", but you can add "please" at the end of the sentence to be polite.
