Ethiopian wolves （埃塞俄比亚狼） mostly choose mice and rabbits as their main food resources. However，these animals also have a sweet tooth. They sometimes drink nectar  （花蜜） from flowers ，scientists say. The research was published in the journal Ecology. 

This points to an unexpected role for wolves in the ecosystem: pollinators  （传粉者）. As a wolf licks  （舔） the nectar from a flower ，its nose and mouth get covered in pollen. The fine powder then gets passed from flower to flower. 

When we think of pollinators ，birds and bees often come to mind. But it turns out that mammals have joined the party as well. They are usually small animals，such as squirrels and bats. Ethiopian wolves，however，weigh about 15 kilograms. They are the first large carnivorous predators  （食肉性捕食者） known to use flowers as a sugary snack. 

Local people have seen wolves lick red hot poker flowers for many years. The nectar of the flower is pleasantly sweet. This behavior ，however ，hadn't been recorded in a scientific paper. 

Sandra Lai is an ecologist at the University of Oxford. Two years ago ，she learned about the wolves' unusual behavior. She wanted to see if the rumors （谣传）were true. Do they go from flower to flower like a busy bee？She decided to find out more. 

In May and June 2023，Lai and her team followed six Ethiopian wolves. These wolves came from three different packs. Four of them visited just a handful of mature flowers to drink from them ，while the other two enjoyed more than 20 flowers. 

Since the wolves belong to different packs ，Lai says the behavior appears to be a widespread practice. But it's unclear whether the pollen carried by wolves help flowers bear fruit. 

Even so ，the new finding is exciting enough. It suggests that the relationships between plants and animals are beyond our imagination. 

Researchers hope this report will  help protect the Ethiopian wolf. The species gets the title of the rarest wolf in the world. It's also Africa's endangered carriors. Fewer than 500 are believed to be alive today. They can only be found in the

Ethiopian highlands.
