In late October 1997, on a fall morning, Mike was attacked by a tiger shark near his home on the island of Kauai while surfing with friends. The shark came right up under him and bit into his lower leg.Mike beat the shark in the face, again and again (just as the experts suggest) until the shark let him go. Swimming to shore, Mike noticed his lower right leg was gone.
It was another day when Mike opened his eyes and realized he was in hospital—with the lower part of his right leg gone.Once Mike was allowed by his doctors, he did something unthinkable: He started surfing again. In fact, his first time back was near the place of his attack. Mike was curious(好奇)—why was he attacked? Was that what attracted the shark?
His curiosity led him to research sharks, and Mike did learn something that would change his life." "said Mike."I learned that 70 million sharks year are killed for their fins only to make shark fin soup."
He began working with the Hawaii state legislature (立法机构) to help pass a ban on shark products. He tried hard with other like-minded shark survivors and biologists to ask the government to make a national bill protecting sharks.
