2、 Wednesday近200个国家签署了保护海洋的新协议
After 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200countries agreed to a new United Nations (UN) agreement to protect the world's oceans. The agreement has been the first of its kind in 40 years. It plans to protect 30% of the open oceans by 2030.
Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth's surface and are home to hundreds of thousands of different kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans are a very important part of a healthy planet. But the oceans are in trouble. Overfishing has had a terrible effect on many kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution from ships and other places has caused serious problems. In 1982, an agreement described the "high seas", but it did not protect them. In these areas, all countries have the right to fish, send ships, and do research. The high seas cover about two-thirds of the ocean. But now people only protect1. 2% of the areas.
Last December, over 110 countries agreed to protect 30% of their land and ocean areas by2030. Without an international agreement, there was no way to make this goal meaningful for the whole ocean. The new agreement now makes this feasible.
The new agreement tries to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas by 2030. It also says that activities planned for the high seas must first be examined to see what kind of influences they might have on the ocean environment. Businesses in some countries hope to make a lot of money by getting valuable things from the bottom of the sea. Other businesses hope to find plants or animals in the ocean that could lead to new discoveries and new medicines.
Many of the disagreements were about how valuable things would be shared between rich countries and poor ones. Poor countries wanted to make sure that the valuable things would help everyone, not just people in rich countries.

More researchers are turning to artificial文章音频intelligence(AI) to monitor the environment and support endangered creatures. Unlike traditional methods that can damage the environment or require considerable time and physical work, AI has the ability to quickly and effectively deal with large quantities of data.
Creatures are disappearing at a speed thousands of times faster than that millions of years ago, with one million creatures endangered. The United Nations set a goal in 2020 to safeguard at least 30% of Earth's land and oceans by the end of 2030. AI is "imperfect" but could make important discoveries faster and earlier, says Nicolas Mialhe, founder of The Future Society, an organization that aims to better manage AI. "We need skilled humans to design AI models and check and collect data. "
A type of AI model called Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) has been developed to recognize bird sounds. The CNN is able to pick out 75 kinds of the birds the researchers have. "Our results prove that AI is ready for recognizing creatures in the wild from sound, " says Muller, the team leader. "All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans. "
Besides monitoring creatures in real time, AI can be used to model the impacts of human activities on the environment and rebuild historical changes. Researchers have used AI to discover how a century's environmental damage in a river has led to creature loss.
Although it is well-known that human activities have resulted in creature loss in rivers and lakes, little is known about which activities have the largest impact. "AI will do soon, "says Luisa Orsini, a researcher from the University of Birmingham.

The world's largest tower crane was put in place on May 8 2024 at the construction site of the North Main Tower of the South Channel Bridge in Jiangsu Province.
When it's finished, the bridge will connect the three cities—— Zhangjiang, Jingjiang and Rugao in Jiangsu Province. It will have two waterway spans and three approach spans. It will have eight lanes and a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
The huge crane put in place on May 8 2024 can lift 15, 000 metric tons. It will help build the tallest suspension bridge tower in the world.

The North Main Tower on Mazhou Island in Jingjiang will be 350 meters high.
"The steel giant arm is here to build the North Main Tower, " said Tian, the engineering director of the bridge. The XGT15000-600S crane was launched in November 2021. It can lift up to 400 meters high and weighs 600 tons. It has been used in big bridge projects before, lifting heavy things at high places and meeting new needs for modular construction.
The bridge is planned to be finished in October 2028. It is expected to help the integration of the Yangtze River Delta and the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

I was nine when my father first sent me flowers. I had been taking tap-dancing lessons for six months, and the school was holding its yearly performance. As a member of the beginners' chorus line, I was 1 of my lowly status(地位). So it was a surprise to have my name called out at the end of the show along with the lead 2 and to find my arms full of red roses. I can still feel myself standing on that stage, blushing(脸红) and gazing out at the audience, seeing my father's grin as he clapped his hands 3 .
As the years passed, other occasions— birthdays, awards, graduations— were 4 with Dad's flowers. Dad's flowers represented his pride, and my success. When I graduated from college, I began a new career and was engaged to be married.
With time passing by, my luck grew. My father slowly became 5 , but his gifts of flowers continued 6 he died of a heart attack a few months before his 70th birthday. I covered his coffin with the largest, reddest roses I could find.
Often in the following years since, I have wanted to go out and buy a big bunch to fill the living room, but I 7 did. I knew it would not be the same.
Then one birthday, the door bell rang. I was feeling 8 because I was alone. My son, Matt, had run out earlier with a "see you later", without mentioning my birthday. So I was surprised to see his large body at the door. "Forgot my key, " he said, shrugging. "Forgot your birthday, too. Well, I hope you like flowers. " He pulled a bunch of daisies from 9 his back. "Oh, Matt, " I10 , hugging him hard, "I love flowers!"
