Shadow puppet plays are known as the pioneer of Chinese animation and have a history of more than one thousand years. They are listed in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage and have a great effect on the development of modern Chinese animation. Early shadow puppets were made of paper, but later people chose leather to make them, for this material is more long-lasting and easy to color. The puppets are cut into different shapes of humans, animals and things, and some have moveable arms, legs and even fingers.

During a performance, puppeteers stand behind a white screen with a light behind it. They hold the puppets close to the screen and move them freely, while speaking the lines for different characters at the same time. The audience can see the clear shadow images and listen to the interesting stories, just like enjoying an animated film. Today, this ancient folk art is in danger of disappearing, so local artists put new parts into the plays, and some use digital lighting to create special visual effects, others mix modern dance moves into traditional performances to draw young people's attention.

Ink-wash animation is a typical form of Chinese animation that connects traditional ink-wash painting with film-making techniques. The first work of this kind, Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother, came out in 1960 and was deeply affected by the paintings of Qi Baishi, a master of Chinese art. Its images are just like real ink paintings, with soft lines and natural color tones, without fixed scripts or vivid character patterns.

Creating this kind of animation is quite challenging because every frame is drawn by artists by hand, and even a short animated film needs hundreds of such paintings. Different from 3D animation, it can't be copied or modified by computers, so every small detail requires careful creation. Though it costs a lot of time and energy, ink-wash animation is welcomed by people worldwide for its special artistic style of China. It's more than a film form and it's a way to spread traditional Chinese art globally. Now, young animators are trying to combine the techniques of ink-wash painting with up-to-date technology to keep this art form alive.

My First Comic Strip Creation

Our English class held a comic strip competition with the theme of "Traditional Art in Animation". I chose to create a story about a little girl who learns to make shadow puppets with her grandpa. At first, I didn't know how to 1 the story into simple frames, so I felt a bit stuck. My deskmate, who is good at drawing, gave me some useful 2 .

Li Dongwei, known as "Tiger Hero", is a wildlife ranger (巡护员) in Jilin. He is working hard to protect the forests and animals.

Li grew up in the mountains and always felt close to nature. In 2012, he began to work as a volunteer ranger. Over time, his love for animals grew. In 2013, Li Dongwei successfully took photos of the Northeast tiger for the first time. Then in 2015, he built a team of six rangers. Now, his team has 21 members, protecting an area of over 600 km².

Every day, the team members spend hours watching animals and removing traps (清除陷阱) . Once, while Li was setting up a camera to watch animals, he suddenly found a tiger just one meter behind him. Then it ran into the forest quickly. He was completely shocked! Later, Li realized that the tiger didn't want to hurt him. The experience made him want to help protect wildlife even more.

Although the work is dangerous, Li never thinks of giving up. Today, Li is still leading his team, making sure that the tigers have a safe place to live. He can always find a feeling of achievement in his job. "Life is short, but protecting animals gives it purpose (意义)." Li said.

Pandas are so cute and lovely. They have become so popular that they are now a  of China. Scientists say there are now  than 2,000 pandas living in the forests.

Pandas do not have many babies, maybe  one every two years. The babies often die from all kinds  illnesses and do not live very long. Adult(成年) pandas spend more than 12 hours a day  about 10 kilos of bamboo. Many years ago, there were a lot more bamboo forests and pandas in China, but then humans started to  down these forests. Pandas can't find enough to eat and they are having fewer babies.

An education program in Chengdu teaches children  pandas and other wild animals in danger. It also tells the children about the  of saving these animals. And the Chinese government is trying hard to help  the pandas. We all hope that in the future  will be a lot more pandas.

Red-crowned cranes are one of the rarest birds in the world. They mainly live in wetlands in China and other Asian countries. However, their habitats (栖息地) are getting smaller because of human activities like farming on wetland land and building houses.  Luckily, new technology is helping to protect these beautiful birds. 

Scientists in Jiangsu Province have put small GPS trackers on 20 red-crowned cranes.  They are light and won't hurt the cranes. They can record the birds' flying routes, resting places, and feeding areas. The information is sent to computers, allowing scientists to learn more about the cranes' living habits.  For example, they found that the cranes travel over 1,000 kilometers every year to spend winter in warmer places. 

Another technology used is drone monitoring. Drones can fly high over wetlands and take clear photos of the cranes without disturbing them or making them scared. This helps scientists count the number of cranes and check if they are healthy.  Local governments have also built more nature reserves to provide safe habitats for the cranes to live in. 

Thanks to these efforts, the number of red-crowned cranes in China has increased from 1,000 to 1,600 in the past 10 years.  "Technology is a powerful tool for wildlife protection," said a scientist. "We will keep on using it to save more endangered animals like red crowned cranes."

Imagine you are in Africa. Suddenly, a group of spots moves past you quickly. What was it? It may be a cheetah, the fastest animal on land. It can run up to 70 miles every hour, which is faster than most cars moving on the highway!

The cheetah is famous for its speed (速度). A cheetah has long legs and a spring-like backbone that help it run fast. It can jump as far as 20 feet in one leap! Although the cheetah can run fast, it can not run for a long time. It uses its energy quickly and becomes tired. If the cheetah can not catch its food quickly, it will have to rest for a while before trying again.

A cheetah is also a great hunter. A cheetah's coat is useful. Its coat is light brown with black spots (斑点). It helps it to hide (隐藏) in the tall brown grass in Africa. Other animals do not see it hiding, so a cheetah can get close to rabbits, birds, and other animals quietly. Besides, it has sharp eyesight（视力). A cheetah can see other animals far away. Good eyesight helps the cheetah find other animals easily.

Today the cheetah is in danger. Parts of Africa are being turned into farms. This change forces the cheetah to find new places to live, which is not always easy. Cheetahs are also being hunted by other animals such as lions and hyenas. Luckily, zookeepers and wildlife experts are trying to save the cheetah. Maybe with their help, cheetahs will grow larger in number.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred. 

Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephant's main lake dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.

To protect the elephants' living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation (情况) became better and there was more food, forest and grassland. 

However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. "If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020," said a member of MEP. 

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants.

A young woman spends her time helping people know more about saving Yangtze's "smiling angels (天使)". The Yangtze River is their home. They are Yangtze finless porpoises (长江江豚)—a kind of animal in danger in China. 

We know they have a beautiful smile because of their special mouth. That's why people love them so much. However, they don't smile any more. People take so many fish from the river that the finless porpoises have less food to eat. And the water isn't so good as before. There are only around 1,000 of the porpoises now. Many volunteers (志愿者) are working hard to save them. Tan Ge is one of them. 

Tan Ge was born in 1991. She grew up in Hunan's Yueyang, a city beside Dongting Lake. The lake is connected to the Yangtze River. After learning about this important animal and the importance of saving the animal, she joined a group of volunteers and started working to save them. 

As she worked with the volunteers, Tan Ge learned more about the animal. And she knew that maybe a lot of people, like herself, didn't know much about the animal. So, in 2018, she joined an association (协会). 

After that, she tried her best to work for the animal. She joined in over 350 field trips to fight against illegal fishing. She saved not only finless porpoises, but also other kinds of wildlife in the area. 

There is a plaсe nаmеd Shаrk Bаy (鲨鱼湾) in Wеstern Australia. Аt lеаst 28 kinds оf shаrks аre swimming through the clеаr wаter therе—thе largеst in thе wоrld. Еspeсiallу tigеr shаrks arе соmmon visitors tо Shark Bay. Thеy move their 15-fоot-lоng (аbout 4.5 mеters) bоdies through thе seаgrаss, somеtimеs catсhing huge sеа cоws for а meal. Although tiger shаrks аrе dangеrous to them, theу аre imроrtant tо thе hеаlth оf thе оcеаn еcosystem. In fact, thеy сan also be our роwеrful friends in stoрping сlimаtе сhangе. 

It all сomеs bаck to the seаgrass that movеs with the wаvеs in Shаrk Вaу. The seаgrass is fооd for thе seа cоws. Eaсh еаts аbout 40 kilоgrаms of sеаgrаss а day. Ву cоntrolling the sеa сow роpulations, tigеr sharks in Shаrk Baу hеlp the sеagrass bеds grоw. A good seagrаss bеd storеs twicе аs much CO2 per squаre milе as fоrеsts dо оn land. 

But in the world, thе tigеr shark poрulаtions аrе becoming smaller, including some рopulations in Australia. Off Austrаlia's northeаst сoаst of Queеnslаnd, it is sаid thаt tiger shаrks havе fallen by at leаst 71%, lаrgеlу beсаusе оf ovеrfishing аnd byсаtсh. A rеduction in tigеr sharks mеans morе seаgrаss еаtеn аnd lеss cаrbоn keрt in thе осеan. 

In Shаrk Ваy, thе tigеr sharks аrе аble to aсhiеve the bаlanсе bу kеeping seа cow рoрulаtiоns dоwn, and nоt аll thе bаy's seаgrass is lost. But here соmеs the quеstiоn: Whаt if sharks disappearеd from thе bаy? The need tо undеrstand how theу supроrt their ecоsystеms bесomes еven mоre urgent.

Wild (野生的) аnimаls аre imрortant tо naturе, but mаny оf them are fасing sеriоus рrоblеms. Тhe Sibеrian tiger is one of thе most еndangеred аnimаls in the world. It is one of thе 1 саts on earth. It саn wеigh uр tо 250 kg. It hаs thick fur to keеp wаrm in сold winters.
