Too much light at night can make your body clock go wrong and make it more difficult to wake up early without an alarm. About two hours before bedtime, start turning down the lights. 

Are you upset because you bought a phone less than a year ago and now have to power it up twice a day? A study from Fudan University, published in Nature on February 12, offers an exciting solution: a special injection (注射剂) that can "treat" the old batteries and make them last much longer. 

Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, used in phones and electric cars, slowly lose power because some lithium-ions become not working over time. These "dead" lithium-ions reduce the battery's ability to keep power. Since 1990, batteries have been replaced once their power level drops below 80%, creating huge amounts of electronic waste. 

But instead of dead batteries, the Chinese researchers saw them as sick patients. As long as the broken part can be treated, the battery could get fully healthy again. 

To "treat" the batteries, the team injected them with an organic lithium salt. The chemical replaced "dead" lithium-ions and made the batteries last longer. Because the way can be repeated, the number of power-ups could jump from between 500 to 2,000 to as many as 60,000. 

Apart from solving your phone's battery problem, the magical treatment could also benefit China and the world in many other ways. 

China is the world's leading producer of lithium-ion batteries, making up about 70% of global production. It is also a major consumer, depending on lithium-ion batteries to power its growing number of new energy vehicles (NEVs). So this battery injection technology will greatly reduce replacement costs for NEV owners. Additionally, solar and wind power stations, which use these batteries to store energy, could also save money. Most importantly, fewer thrown-away batteries mean less pollution. Every year, over 500,000 tons of used batteries harm the environment—this technology could significantly reduce that number. 

For student Chen Honghan, the journey to school has changed from a treacherous 3-hour walk to a safe thirty-minute trip that feels like flying through the clouds, thanks to the "cloud school bus". 

Chen comes from Nizhuhe village located at the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. For years, Chen and her classmates walked on muddy routes to reach their school high on the top of the cliffs (悬崖). 

However, this challenging journey has now changed into a wonderful tour. They first ride a 6-minute scenic bus and then take a lift that climbs 268 metres. Next, they take a cable car ride that climbs over 200 metres. After a 1-kilometre walk, they arrive at the school in just under 30 minutes. 

The change began with the introduction of the eco-cultural tourism in 2017. The project helped build a cliffside lift in 2018 and a cable car in 2022. They were made free for the villagers there. 

The "cloud school bus" not only safely sends the village children to school but has also attracted many tourists to the area. 

In 2024, 300,000 visitors came, bringing in the profit of nearly 20 million yuan. This also has improved villagers' lives, with many starting businesses like farmstays, coffee shops and guesthouses. Additionally, some villagers have returned to their hometowns to contribute to this growth. 

Cai Xiong is one of them who led many amazing projects like the cliffside lift. "This tourism project is not only meant to help the villagers succeed, but also to serve as a ‘ladder to the clouds' for the children. I hope they will climb this ladder, gain experience and grow, and finally return with the skills to make their hometown even better," he said.

On December 26th,2024, a small Chinese start-up company called DeepSeek introduced a new AI system that could match top chatbots (聊天机器人) from some large companies. According to the same tests used by American AI companies, the DeepSeek chatbot could answer questions, solve logic (逻辑) problems, and even write computer programs.

What's surprising is that DeepSeek created this AI system at a much lower cost. While big technology companies spent tens of millions of dollars building their latest AI systems, DeepSeek only needed about $6 million. This challenges the idea that only large companies can afford to build the most modern AI systems.

Since a well-known company started its chatbot in 2022, many experts believed no company could compete without spending hundreds of millions on special chips (芯片). Leading AI companies often use supercomputers with up to 16,000 chips to train their chatbots. However, DeepSeek's engineers said they only needed about 2,000 special chips.

Because getting chips was hard, DeepSeek engineers had to train their AI system more smartly to keep up. A professor studying technology and international relations said they did a great job even with difficulties.

DeepSeek's success shows that small companies can also create powerful AI systems with smart plans and few materials It opens new chances for development in the AI field.
