English people like DIY. There is a saying in the UK—"An Englishman's home is his castle". Huge numbers of people spend their holiday making their homes beautiful "castles". If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people find the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. 

DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market（市场）for DIY furniture. People need to get together pieces of furniture with a few tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can't understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are very simple but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though they started most DIY projects with the best ideas, they may not finish many of them. DIY can also be dangerous. But many people don't care about this warning（广告）and put themselves in danger.

What is DIY, why do many people like it? Yang Chen works for a computer business in Beijing. He enjoys his work.  One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toy shop, he had an idea. "Why not make them myself?" Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else.  So what is DIY? Yes, it is making or creating things on your own, with your own hands. 

It may take much time, but some people, now known as DIYers, enjoy doing it very much. They enjoy it because it is fun.  What's more, they think it is a good way to protect the environment (环境). 

 Many people remember the days when it was once a way of life in the past. During the 1960s and 1970s, when there were not enough living things for people to live on, they had to use their own hands to do many things.  and if they needed something, they also made it themselves. 

Times have changed and DIY also has different meanings. 

Madison Checketts, a teenager, has loved the beach since she was a child. But each time on her family vacations, she could easily notice plastic (塑料的) bottles lying on the sand. After learning more about plastic pollution and methods to reduce it, she created an edible (可食用的) water bottle called Eco-Hero. 

She started working on the project in October, 2021. In her early project, when Checketts asked herself what she could do to make the world a better place, she thought about reducing plastic pollution. Single-use plastic products like water bottles are used and thrown away. After that, plastic water bottles often end up in the sea. Plastic pollution is a main ____ to the sea and wildlife in it. After being selected (挑选) as one of the students from her school to compete in the school district's science fair, she won first place at a state science fair before advancing to a national competition. 

An Eco-Hero holds about three-quarters of a cup of water and costs about $1. 2 to make. Basically, people make a hole at the top of the gelatinous membrane (胶质 膜 ) and drink the water. "It took many tries to get the membrane strong enough so it would not pop in my hands,"Checketts says. 

In her free time, Checketts likes to play soccer, draw and spend time with family and friends. When she grows up, she wants to find a way to combine her hobbies and studies, and either be an engineer, a designer or a soccer player. 

As Checketts thinks about the future of the Eco-Hero, she says she wants to run more tests to make the bottle stronger and bigger. She hopes the Eco-Hero encourages people to think and understand that everyone can make the world a better place.

Tools

3 corks (软木塞), elastic bands (橡皮筋), colored paper, a stick, glue and scissors

Steps

Choose three corks. Use a stick to make a hole in the middle of a cork. The cork with the hole should be in the middle. Join them together with two elastic bands. Your boat can be better if you glue the corks before that. 

Then, cut a sail shape (帆形) and a triangle shape (三角形) out of colored paper. Glue the triangle shape on the top of the stick to make a flag. Make two holes at the top and bottom of the sail shape. Put the stick with the flag through the two holes. Remember to cut away the useless part of the stick so that it will be in the right size. After placing the stick into the hole of the middle cork, the boat is completely done!

Your boat is ready to set sail.

Bright red in color, with perfect sweet-and-sour taste, tanghulu is a popular traditional snack in most parts of northern China. In the past, people mainly used the hawthorn berries (山楂) to make tanghulu. But now, people prefer to use other fruits like oranges, bananas, grapes and strawberries. To make some perfect tanghulu, you can follow these steps:

Prepare what you need:

Hawthorn berries or other fruits, white sugar and water. 

Step 1

Start off by washing the hawthorn berries or any other fruits you choose. Once done, dry the fruits. Don't forget this step. 

Step 2

Put the fruits on bamboo sticks. If you use long sticks, put 4—6 pieces of fruits on each stick. If you use short ones, 1—3 pieces are enough. 

Step 3

Add water and white sugar to a pan and then mix them well. Heat the pan until bubbles (气泡) appear and the color changes. When doing this, you can test the temperature of the mixture by dipping (浸) a spoon of the mixture in cold water. When the mixture hardens (变硬) immediately, it is at the right temperature. It is the key to making your perfect tanghulu. 

Step 4

Now, dip each fruit stick into the sugar mixture to easily coat the fruits. Remember to turn it so that all sides are covered. 

Step 5

Once done, place each stick on a plate. Remember to leave enough space between each other to stop them from sticking together. After a few minutes, you can taste them. 

With the step-by-step instructions, you can have a try at home. Try with different kinds of fruits to see which taste you like best. 

All my family members like eating bread and cakes. My grandmother loves making them, and is always surprised that the rest of my family never do any baking. So my parents decided they'd take me and my younger sister to go on a training 1 so that we could all find out how to make bread and pizzas, our favourite food! We booked our places, 2 set off for Oakton Farm in the countryside.
