Four students share their life on the Interner. Do you want to know what they are doing?

Deep under the Pacific Ocean lie coral reefs colored by some algae that live with corals. Corals usually provide nitrogen(氮) to algae, and in return they get carbon(碳), which gives them energy. This partnership is important for reef ecosystems, supporting nearly 25%of all creatures(生物) in the deep ocean. 

In the early 1980s, a huge heat wave turned more than 90 percent of these corals lifeless. The accident made the reefs not only bleached(白化), but also face the challenge of dying out. And it was believed that about 50 percent of reefs with beautiful corals might disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed up the same Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in 2015-2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn't influence the reefs as badly as the first one did. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt(适应). A 2020 study in Nature mentioned that some coral reefs have developed"ecological memory", which means their speed of returning to normal from heat waves is increasing. But it also pointed out that without any quick and effective action, 70-90% of reefs could still disappear by 2050. 

"Swimming" in cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, for it makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others can use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to"fan" away too much harmful oxygen(O₂) let out by stressed-out algae. Certain baby corals change their own metabolisms(新陈代谢) in order to fight the high temperature. But all these adaptations can protect themselves only to some degree. 

After studying and understanding these adaptations, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If scientists can make corals accept algae that can deal with heat pressure or if they improve genes(基因) that can deal with heat pressure, it will raise the corals' chance of living through future ocean heat waves. 

Yuan Dongjue is a provincial-level representative inheritor of ancient book restoration in Sichuan Province. Yuan has been repairing ancient books for 40 years. Now in her late 70s, she still  loves this work. 

Yuan's connection with ancient book restoration  in the early 1980s. At that time, restoration work in most parts of China had stopped for years and needed to be restarted. In 1983, while working in the Book Repair Department at the Sichuan Provincial Library, she was recommended  an ancient book restoration training program. 

"After returning, I knew this was what I really wanted to do, " she said. A year of professional training made  fall in love with ancient book restoration. In 1984, she started setting up an ancient book restoration workshop at the Sichuan Provincial Library.  Yuan' s efforts, the workshop finally took shape with a professional set of tools and materials, as well as standardized(标准化的) restoration processes. For the next 18 years, she managed the  ancient book restoration work on her own. 

Yuan has made great contributions to ancient book restoration. She has restored 355 kinds of valuable ancient books,  , and other important materials, totaling 4, 088 items. Yuan also finds satisfaction from  professional courses. Up to now, she has accepted 38 learners and taught over 1, 000students through many forms. Two of her students, Luo Hanqi and Wu Shiyu, have become figures(人物) in Sichuan's ancient book restoration. 

Today, Yuan continues to love ancient book restoration. "Restoring ancient books  me feeling young, " she said.

I learned something amazing today. It's about solving a real—life problem Let me share it with you. 

The problem:

Wang Ming, a 9th—grade student, goes to school(point B) from his house(point A). On his way to school, he walks quickly to the Food Street for his breakfast. Look at the map of his neighborhood, in order not to be late for school, which breakfast house(point P) should he choose along the street(AP + PB) to shorten his total walking distance?

Actually, this is called Heron's Shortest Path Problem, named after a Greek math expert who studied light reflection 2, 000 years ago! He discovered that light always takes the shortest path when reflecting off a mirror. For Wang Ming's problem, the street acts like a" mirror"。

How it works:

①Mirror Trick: Imagine reflecting point A across the street to create a" mirror image"A'. Now, A' is on the opposite side of the street, exactly as far from the street as A. 

②The straight line between two points is the shortest path! Connect A' and B. Where this line crosses the street is the best point P!

Why it works:

—By reflecting A to A', the distance AP+PB becomes A'P+PB (since AP=A'P). 

—The straight line A'B is the smallest possible total distance. 

Cool, right?

It's amazing how the math expert from ancient Greece solves a real problem in life! His idea is even used today in GPS systems and building design. 

Now, let's look back at Wang Ming's problem. If both Wang Ming's house(point A) and the school(point B) are 2km away from the street, and it's 3km from Wang's house to the school. What's the shortest path of AP+PB?

Dads have Father's Day. Moms have Mother's Day. Kids have Children's Day. But do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month every year. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for a long life, people celebrate the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes for the elderly to live a long life. 

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for good luck and hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine(菊花酒) and wear zhuyu branches or decorate their homes with zhuyu leaves to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemums and zhuyu are regarded as pure(纯净的) plants that can purify the environment of houses and protect against diseases. 

Respecting elderly people is expressed not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, he or she should use both hands as a sign of respect. 

It is a traditional virtue(美德) in China to respect elderly people. That is because the Chinese believe that elderly people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. So, Chinese people are proud of their elders. Besides, to respect the elderly is to respect yourself tomorrow. 

Headphones are helpful. We use them to listen to music without troubling others. Many kids use them in school. But do you know that headphones can also be harmful?

If we play music too loudly, headphones can cause hearing impairment(损伤).   The cause is loud noise. 

Do you know how hearing works? Inside our ears, there are tiny cells called hair cells that help us hear. These cells are so small that they can only be seen with a microscope. When sound waves hit these cells, they move backward and forward, creating signals that our brain turns into sound. But loud noises can break these cells.  

One sign of hearing impairment is tinnitus(耳鸣). It is a ringing sound in the ears that doesn't easily go away.  

So, how can we protect our ears? The key is to keep the volume(音量) on our headphones low. We should still be able to hear sounds around us, and others shouldn't be able to hear what we' re listening to. If someone else can hear your music through your headphones, it's too loud!

  The pinna collects sounds and the ear canal directs them to the eardrum, which sends signals to the inner ear. These signals are then sent to the brain.  

In conclusion, while headphones are great for enjoying music, we need to use them wisely to protect our hearing. Keep the volume down, and enjoy the sounds of the world without hurting your ears!
