The New Year party was usually held at my aunt's house and my favorite part was the apple cake. At the age of 11, when I first found out that my grandfather, who almost never went into the kitchen, was the master1 it, I was greatly surprised. And I thought that this was the perfect chance to get his recipe(制作方法), and that I could have a time to2 with him.
Since then, I would go to my aunt's home early on the morning of New Year's Day,and we'd make the cake together cheerfully. I was3 that Grandpa could peel an apple in one whole piece (一整条). And we'd mix everything and put it into the oven. Once the cake was done, the house would smell like apples.
But as I got older, so did Grandpa.
One New Year's Day, as I was taking out the apples from the shopping bag4 as usual, he looked at me and said,"Sophia, what are you doing?"

Do you know the five main senses we have? They are touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing. They are controlled by different parts of our brains. So we call the brain our built-in"BeiDou". Brains help our bodies work smoothly. Try this: close your eyes and touch your nose. It's easy, right? That's because our brains can receive messages about where our body parts are. We can also stand on one leg without falling down. If we lose our balance, our brains will give us orders to fix it.
★ Tests show that people see spider pictures faster than flowers. Some researchers also found that people react (作出反应) to loud noises faster than to a friend's voice.Scientists aren't completely sure about the reasons. Some suggest that this skill might come from ancient times. Our ancestors were often faced with predators. So they had to protect themselves from dangerous animals like spiders and tigers, or they would lose their lives. Until today, we still jump at sudden noises or shadows(影子) in dark rooms.
Here is more about brains. Can you imagine seeing colors when you hear music, or tasting candy when you see the sunshine? It's called sense mixing. Scientists think this happens when different senses intermingle (相互交织). Another fact is that temperature sometimes influences our senses. Some people can feel storms coming through knee pain.So we often joke that we're"human weather apps". Also, our brains are able to make adjustment(调整) to some senses. If someone can't see well, his hearing or touch might become stronger.
Though scientists have done much research on the brain, there's still a lot to do. Have you ever wondered why some people are better at sports? What's the secret to improving memory? Then it's time for you to start your discovering journey.

As we often use eyes to touch nature, most of us"lose" the ability to listen to the world.
Peter writes music. He likes natural sounds and use them as part of his music. He often went out to the wild with his microphone and recorded interesting sounds to put in movies or to use in his own songs. Instead of trying to capture just the sound of one animal or bird, he recorded the sound of everything all together— the animals, the trees, the wind and the earth. He called these recordings"soundscapes"— the sound of a certain place.Every soundscape had a lot of information.
Back in his workshop, Peter used a computer to make a sound picture of all the sounds in a place. Each animal, bird and insect had its own place on the picture— its own notes in the music. The more sounds the picture has, the more lively the place is."While a picture may be worth 1,000 words, a soundscape is worth 1,000 pictures," Peter said."Our ears tell us the sound of every leaf and animal and these sounds tie us to the natural world, which gives us life. This connection helps us love everything, especially ourselves."
But not everything is satisfying. When Peter began recording over forty years ago, he could record for ten hours and get one hour of good sound for a movie. Now, because of human activities, it can take over 1,000 hours to get the same thing. Some places he has recorded have slowly fallen silent. His sound pictures show that although nature might look the same to humans, it has lost part of its beautiful sounds.
So next time you are in the forests, try another way to look— shut your eyes, and listen.
(1)、Why did Peter record natural sounds?A、To write songs for a music group. B、To discover rich lives in the forest. C、To use some of them in his music. D、To make music about birds singing.(2)、What does the underlined word"capture" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Shut. B、Catch. C、Open. D、Check.(3)、What is a sound picture in the text?A、The sound of every leaf and animal in nature. B、The sound recorded in the natural environment. C、A picture of music with sounds of 1,000 animals. D、A picture of music with natural sounds in a place.(4)、What can we learn from paragraph 4?A、Recording sounds needs less material. B、Sound pictures are the same as before. C、Some beautiful sounds in nature are lost. D、Human activities improve recording results.(5)、What does the writer mainly want to tell us?A、Nature is where our future comes from. B、Nature has wonders to be heard. C、Making music enriches our lives. D、Making music needs information. -

Do you often have a little candy or snacks every day? Do you think it is a bad or good habit?
A study by Yale University shows that foods high in sugar and fat can greatly influence our brains. These foods taste nice and are easy to get, but they have hidden effects on our bodies. Even if you just eat a little, your food preferences may change slowly.
All the volunteers in the study were about 25 years old with normal BMIs(身体质量指数). At first, the vol-unteers had no strong preference for foods high in sugar and fat. Then they were divided into two groups and put on a normal diet. They ate rice, vegetables and meat as usual every day. The only difference between the groups was the yogurt(酸奶) that the scientists gave them. One group had yogurt high in sugar and fat, while the other had yogurt low in both.
Except for the difference in sugar and fat, the yogurt had the same number of calories(卡路里) in both groups. Each volunteer ate two bottles of yogurt a day. After eight weeks, the scientists tested their food choices. People who ate the high-sugar yogurt showed a greater need for sweets. They even wanted to eat cakes or chocolate after meals. In the long term, this may lead to obesity(肥胖) and make people get sick more easily.
Healthy eating habits are formed day by day, and so are unhealthy ones. To keep healthy, we should not eat foods that are high in sugar and fat too much or too often. Instead, we can try choosing fruits or other natural snacks when we want to eat something between meals.
(1)、Who were chosen as volunteers in the Yale experiment?A、Teenagers who like sweets. B、Overweight adults aged about 40. C、Young adults around 25 with normal BMIs.(2)、What was the only difference between the two groups of volunteers?A、The yogurt they ate. B、The water they drank. C、The exercise they did.(3)、What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A、To ask readers to form healthy eating habits. B、To list some healthy natural snacks for readers. C、To explain why unhealthy eating habits are easy to form.(4)、What would be the best structure(结构) of the text(P= Paragraph)?A、

In nature, wild animals face all kinds of dangers around them. So staying safe is just as important as finding food. Different animals have clever ways to protect themselves from danger. Some use colors, others use tricks—and all these skills help them stay alive in the wild.
Many animals use camouflage to protect themselves. For example, leaf insects look exactly like dry leaves—their bodies have matching lines and they move slowly like leaves in the wind, making it hard for birds to find them.Arctic rabbits change colour with the seasons: white in winter and brown in summer, so predators(捕食者) can hardly see them.
Other animals use special ways to scare enemies away. When in danger, a pufferfish (河豚) fills its body with water or air to become round and much larger. In this way, it can scare its enemies away. Skunks(臭鼬) send out a smelly liquid. The bad smell is so strong that other animals run away quickly. Even small animals like ladybugs have tricks; they play dead when caught, and some give out a bad-tasting liquid to make their enemies spit them out.
Some animals work together to stay safe. Meerkats(猫鼬) live in groups: while most look for food, one stands on its back legs to watch for danger. If it sees an enemy, it makes a loud call—— and the whole group runs into their underground holes. Bees also protect each other: when a bee attacks an enemy, it sends a signal(a smell), and oth-er bees come to keep danger away.
From hiding to scaring to working together, animals have amazing skills. These skills are not just clever—— they are necessary for them to live in the wild.
(1)、What does the underlined word"camouflage" mean in the text?A、A method of finding food easily. B、A skill to avoid danger in a hurry. C、A way for animals to hide by looking like things around them.(2)、What can skunks do to protect themselves?A、They send out a smelly liquid. B、They fill their bodies with water or air. C、They live in groups and help each other.(3)、When do meerkats run into their underground holes?A、When they need to look for food. B、When they want to send a signal. C、When the watcher sees enemies and calls loudly.(4)、Where is the text most likely from?A、A storybook. B、A news report. C、A nature magazine. -
