Tips for English Learning

You can learn a lot from your English classes, but you can also learn a lot outside of school.Here are some tips for improving your English!

Listen to music! A lot of popular songs are in English. You can also watch videosfor many songs online with subtitles（字幕）。

Watch movies! Are you a movie fan? Choose a movie you know and like in your ownlanguage, and watch it in English. It's easy to watch with subtitles, and you can write downany new or useful words.

Read! Read a novel in your own language, and then read it in English. 

Talk! Conversations are the best way to get confident in a new language. Find an English-speaking friend online and talk by sending messages or having a video. Just be careful! Don'tgive away too much personal information.

 You can't improve in just one weekend, so don't study for hours every day—just alittle every day is enough to make progress.

How many close friends do you have? And does the number of friends you have make a difference to your life?

Researchers in Australia studied 1,500 people over 70 and found that those with strong friendships live longer. One key reason is that good friends encourage healthy habits. For example,people with close friends are more likely to exercise, eat well, and feel good about themselves.

Friendships also influence wealth. An American study of 10,000 students, over a period of 35years, found that if you make more friends at school, you' ll make more money in later life. People need good social skills at work to manage people and work in a team successfully. These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.

Online networks make it easy to stay in touch. On average, teenagers have 500 online"friends,"while adults have 130. But according to Oxford professor Robin Dunbar, people regularly communicate with only about 150. He suggests we typically have five very close friends, ten more we contact sometimes,35 we share hobbies with, and 100 we don't know well. Beyond this,relationships become less meaningful.

However, having too many online friends might be harmful. A Canadian study of teenagers found that highly sociable users experienced more anxiety. Sccing others'" perfect lives" can make people feel bad, and being popular online can cause social pressure.

If you have a lot of online"friends", try this: first take away all the people you can't remember.Then those you haven't been in touch with for a year and, finally take away friends who you wouldn't care if you lost touch with. How many do you have left? How many of these people are actually good friends? According to the research, these are the only people that really matter.

Are you a nature lover? Then you must visit Zhangye Geopark in China! It has been regarded by UNESCO as one of the world's top geoparks. If you enjoy beautiful views of nature, it's really worth a visit. Here, you can see the beauty of the rainbow hills.

They are low hills that look like waves and have many different colors, just like a rainbow! There is hardly any grass growing on the land. When you see the hills from above, it's like you' re looking at rainbows painted on the ground.

You may wonder how these colorful hills came to be. Millions of years ago, this area was under a lake. Over time, rivers brought in sand and stones with different kinds of metal elements（元素）。These were left in layers（层）on the bottom of the lake. Some layers were red, some yellow, and others turned purple or blue. Later, as the climate became colder and drier, the lake dried up. Then,something amazing happened! The underground land began to rise and push against each other. The layers of sandstone were lifted higher and higher. Through years of wind, sun, and rain, they formed the colorful hills we see today,

June to September is the best time to visit Zhangye Geopark. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the mornings and evenings are cooler than the hot days, providing perfect weather to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Sunshine after a summer rain will make the colors of the hills appear even brighter and more beautiful.

When I was eight, I got a book about stars from my dad as a birthday present. That was the beginning of my lifetime interest.

I used to go outside with my mom on clear nights and look at the sky. It looked like black silk with a million diamonds（钻石）on it. In different seasons, we saw different groups of stars. In winter,the"belt" of Orion appeared in the night sky, its three stars perfectly lined up and shining brightly. In summer, we saw Vega shine brightly as it got dark. Sometimes we saw stars shooting across the sky.How beautiful they were! Every time I looked up,I was amazed, as if the sky was speaking to me in its own way.

Studying the stars was great fun for me, and I was greatly curious about the night sky. Once I learnt a little, I soon wanted to find out more and more. I asked all kinds of questions, and my parents were always very patient with me. If they didn't know the answers, they would encourage me to find them in the library. So I read a lot about the topic, and my understanding increased as I grew older.

Now, studying the stars is my career. I host a TV program called The Sky at Night. I use my knowledge to take people on a journey across the Milky Way, and I teach people about the different stars in a lively way. My TV program has lasted more than 50 years, and I am really proud of that!

Actually, you too can turn your interests into your career. Anybody can achieve their dreams.You just have to enjoy what you do!

This is the Year of the Snake. But did you know that long ago, snakes had four legs and could run (fast) than rabbits? Here's the story of how they lost their legs. 

Once, the Moon Goddess warned all the (animal) that the weather would be very dry soon. "Leave now, here will turn into  very hot and dry place!" she said. So, insects, birds, and others left. But the lazy snake just laughed and said  __(proud), "I'm staying right here!". 

As time passed, the hungry snake wanted (leave), because the rivers dried up and there was no food left. Unluckily, its legs  (burn) badly by the hot sand. The snake was so scared it cried, "Moon Goddess, please forgive me! Save me!" The Moon Goddess felt sorry the snake. So she made its legs disappeared and gave it a smooth body to slide on. She said, "Remember this——you are too proud, it will make you lose things. "

Some people say the snake learned not to be so proud after that. This story reminds (we)that it's important to be able to look ahead and stay humble. 

Farmers Jim and Bob faced a big problem while trying to get beans out of a huge bin. The beans just wouldn't come out. Jim was  （充满）of confidence and believed he could solve it. Little did he know, this confidence got him in much（麻烦）. He climbed some stairs and entered the bin.  （突然）, the beans fell down and completely covered him!

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to know exactly how others are feeling? This special ability is called emotional intelligence, or EQ（情商）. It makes you understand your own feelings and the feelings of others, like having a superpower for feelings. 

EQ has something to do with awareness（意识）. For example, when you can tell that you' re feeling angry before you do something, or when you can see that a friend is sad even if they say they' re OK, you' re using EQ. This awareness lets you make better choices. If you' re upset, you can take deep breaths to feel better. If your friend is sad, you can offer a kind word or a hug. 

Scientists have discovered that people with strong EQ are easy to be happier and more successful. Why? Because understanding feelings makes you communicate better, solve problems, and build stronger friendships. When you know how you feel, you can express yourselves clearly without hurting others. When you understand how others feel, you can act with kindness and support. 

There are many easy ways to improve your EQ. Start by paying attention to your feelings. Are you happy, excited, nervous, or disappointed? Try to name your feelings so you can understand them better. Practice positive self-talk when things are hard, like saying, "I can do this!" You can also try to see things from other people's point of view. Activities like drawing or listening to music can make you relax and be more aware of your feelings. 

EQ is like a skill you can practice. The more you use it, the better you' ll be at making friends, facing school challenges, and dealing with life's ups and downs. 

①Birthdays can sometimes be expensive. People often spend money not just on gifts, but also on food and drinks. So many people have started giving second-hand gifts. But is it a good choice? Let's look at both sides. 

②One reason people choose second-hand gifts is for the environment. Many of us have old toys, books or games that we no longer use. If we throw them away, they end up in landfills（垃圾堆）. In these landfills, things can take years to break down and harmful gases are produced. Giving away old things instead of throwing them away can reduce waste and protect the environment. Second-hand gifts are also often cheaper than new ones. What's more, reusing things reduces the need to produce more products, which also reduces pollution. 

③ △ When you give a new gift, you know it's in perfect condition, and it feels special because it's new. People also like receiving something that shows you' ve thought about them, and sometimes, a second-hand gift might not feel as thoughtful. You may worry that the gift will wear out soon, which can make you feel uncertain about giving it. People may also feel excited when they receive gifts they have wanted for a long time. Of course, it's fine to want the latest toys or books for a birthday gift. After all, it's their special day. 

④In the end, whether you give a second-hand or new gift depends on the situation. Both can show you care, but it's important to consider what the birthday person would like the most. What matters most is the thought behind the gift, no matter if it's new or old. 

Henry pulled his mother's hand as they walked past the toy store. "Mum, look! The Steel Man Action Set is finally here! Can I buy it with the money I got from Grandma for chores?" he asked excitedly. He imagined playing with the shiny set, pretending to fight monsters. 

"Henry, it costs almost all your savings, " Mum replied gently. "And remember last time? Your Spider-Man broke in two days. Let's save for something stronger. "

"But it's my money!" Henry crossed his arms, his voice rising. "You always say no!"

This usually happens between parents and kids in many families. Who should have the last word?

For parents, they want kids to spend money wisely. They don't want kids to waste money on toys that break quickly. This can make kids upset. So parents have to explain patiently to let kids make better choices. They also encourage saving for special things, like a bike or a school trip. They tell kids to think twice before shopping instead of impulse buying. 

But kids often have their own thoughts. Money from chores is theirs. They feel proud of it and want to spend it however they like. If they can't, they feel angry or sad. 

So, what's the solution? First, parents should explain why saving money is important. Kids should also have a chance to tell their parents why they want something. Second, it's OK for kids to learn from mistakes. If a toy breaks quickly, they' ll think twice next time. Lastly, parents can lead their kids to set goals and save for something bigger or more meaningful. 

Henry's mum finally said, "You can buy the Steel Man if you save half your money first. " Henry agreed and worked hard to save for two weeks. He then bought the set. But guess what? Its arm fell off the next day! Henry frowned. "Maybe saving money is smart, " he said to Mum, realizing that waiting for something worth the money was the better choice.
