Family is very important for everyone, no matter where you are from. So in both theEast and the West, people have festivals to celebrate family reunions. These festivals include theMid-Autumn Festival in China and Thanksgiving Day in the US. How are they celebrated and what are the differences? Let's take a look.

Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest holidays in the US. It's on the fourth Thursday ofNovember. People visit their friends and relatives to remind themselves that they are lucky to have happiness, health and family and also to have a roof over their heads. 

In 1621, about 100 English people took a ship, the Mayflower, and arrived in the northeastern US. The winter there was very cold and life was hard. As the American Indians helped them a lot, the English people asked them to have a big meal with them in order to express their thanks. The celebration lasted for three days. 

Today, people usually have a family meal on Thanksgiving Day. They enjoy delicious food such as pumpkin scones and a big, golden turkey. 

There are other traditions on the day. For example, the turkey has a V-shaped bone in the breast. It's called a wishbone. After roasting, two persons each take one end of the bone. They make a wish and then pull it. If one gets the larger part of the bone, he or she will get good luck.

The most important part of Thanksgiving Day is to say" thanks"— this is the spirit of the holiday. People also like to watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. 

Do you know" digital pickles"? Recently, this new type of pickle is being discussed. Itrefers to the videos people watch while eating. Many people think that the videos can make their food more appetizing, just like a spoonful of pickles sometimes making a meal taste much better. 

The topic received more than 16 million clicks on the Internet and about 100, 000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of having meals with friends and family members, many young people in China like to watch TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the" digital pickles". 

Can this habit affect your diet? According to research, you may eat more without knowing it. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating patterns on four different days. The patterns included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction. After studying their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric ingestion by about 15 percent. 

To find out the reason, the team also invited two groups of people: One group at e while listening to an audio clip about another person eating, and the other listened to a clip that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they were more focused on their meals. When we eat with the"digital pickles", our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected. 

Not only videos and audioclips but also other tasks can work as "digital pickles". Aresearch project led by the University of Sussex. UK, pointed out that activities which require lots of attention trick many participants into overeating. The team invited 120 participants to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. "Our study suggests that if you' re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a highly engaging task, you' re less likely to be able to tell how full you feel, " one of the authors Martin Yeomans explained.

China's first Sora-level text-to-video large model called Vidu has made big steps forward since it was shown at the 2024Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing. 

Now, Vidu can make 32-second videos with just one click. It can also make audio and video, so the videos it makes have sound. At the same time, it can do 4D making, which means it can make 4D content that is the same in space and time from one video. 

Vidu was made by Chinese AI company Shengshu Technology and Tsinghua University. When it first came out in April, it could make a 16-second high-definition video with 1080p resolution with one click. 

At a forum in June, Professor Zhu, Vice Dean of the Tsinghua University ArtificialIntelligence Research Institute and Chief Scientist of Shengshu Technology, showed a 32-second video made by Vidu. The video showed a turning globe on a bookshelf in a library, and the camera zoomed in to show a blue planet inside the globe. 

Vidu 4D can exactly rebuild 4D content from one video. Zhu said the basic structure can support the making and matching of audio of any length in theory. 

The company said it's China's first video large model with a longer time, very good consistency, and dynamic ability, and it's"very close to" the level of Sora. 

Sora is a generative AI model from the US-based OpenAI at the start of this year. With the ability to make real and imaginative scenes from text instructions, the model has made a big impact on the tech world. The company also said the main structure of the large model started in September 2022, which was earlier than when Sora used its structure.
