For those who prefer to sit on their sofas and enjoy entertainment (娱乐) programs on Chinese New Year's Eve, the Spring Festival Gala(春 晚 ) is something not to be missed. However, the 2025 Spring Festival Gala, as the first gala following the successful inclusion (入选) of the Chinese Spring Festival in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH 非遗) list, was much more than an entertainment event.

The gala began with an eye-catching opening act featuring (以 …为 特 点 ) Li Ziqi, the Internet influencer and Sichuan ICH Ambassador. Her dress in this act included many Chinese ICH art forms, such as plant dyeing (coloring cloth with leaves), bamboo weaving and Miao embroidery. In total, 13 ICH different skills were used. "Each part of the dress tells a story from the past, and they make me deeply understand how rich Chinese culture is." said a viewer.

Another highlight of the Gala was the Cyber Yangko Dance in which humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes performed yangko dance, spun handkerchiefs (转 手 绢 ) and formed creative group patterns. The show amazed audiences and showed the modern technology-traditional art connection. One audience Mr. Zhang expressed, "I had much fun watching it and was amazed at how technology brought new life to traditions."

The 2025 Spring Festival Gala featured a Tibet branch-venue (西藏分会场 ) showing cultural exchange through performances like "Flying Strings and Welcoming Spring". Dancers from different ethnic groups (民 族 ) wore traditional Tibetan costumes to perform the Mangkang String Dance. The cultural exchange was further intensified by the foreign band One Republic's performance of "Counting Stars". The song connected the energetic rhythm with Chinese-style stage design and traditional instruments, offering both Chinese and global audiences a wonderful cultural experience.

As an important part of the Spring Festival, the Gala celebrates not only China's rich traditions but also modern achievements. And China, as a nation with rich cultural heritage and a creative spirit, will continue to shine on the international stage.

Hundreds of years ago, King Alfred of England was famous for being brave, wise and kind. But one day, the Danes launched a surprise attack on England. Alfred managed to escape, and ran into a forest.

Alfred was very tired when he finally reached a small house of mud and wood. A fire was burning outside, so he went inside to warm himself.

"Who are you?" asked an unwelcoming voice. The king turned around in surprise and saw an old lady.

Alfred wanted to tell the woman that he was her king. but would she then ell him to the Danes?

Finally, he said," I am just a poor traveller, lost in the forest. Could you give me food and shelter?"

The woman said," I suppose I could. But you have to help me around the house!"

Alfred stayed with the old woman and helped her with the housework. He wasn't used to doing the work, and the old woman spoke to him angrily when he made mistakes.

One day, she made some oat （燕麦） cakes and put them to bake over the fire.

"Watch these cakes for me!" she told him." Don't let them burn!"

Alfred sat by the fire and poked the oat cakes with a stick.

He said to himself." I am a king, and I need to take back my kingdom!"

Alfred thought about how he might gather his armies and drive off the Danes. That was when he smelled something burning, and heard the old woman shouting at him!

"I told you to pay attention!" she yelled. "Those cakes are ruined!"

"Be quiet!" he shouted." I am your king, and I am thinking about how to take back my kingdom from the Danes!"

The old woman looked in surprise." You? The king of England?" Alfred nodded.

She rolled her eyes at him." Well, that's no excuse for burning my nice oat cakes!"

A few months later, Alfred managed to unite the English and fight back against the Danes. He finally won back his kingdom.

However, he never forgot the lesson the old woman taught him.

We should all have at least one fire extinguisher somewhere in our house or office building. However, it's not enough to simply keep an extinguisher somewhere. The best way to be ready for a sudden fire is to study this guide carefully and review it from time to time. Here is what we should do when a fire suddenly breaks out.

⒈Have a clear exit route (疏散路线)

Before using the fire extinguisher, make sure you have a clear exit route. If you cannot put out the fire, you will need to make a safe exit. Also, make sure everyone else is out.

⒉Report the fire

Even if the fire appears manageable, you should always have the firemen on the way. Once they arrive, they can double-check to see if the fire has been completely put out.

⒊Stand back

Face the fire and keep your back to the clear exit. You should stay between 1.8 and 2.5 meters away from the flames (火焰) as you prepare to use the fire extinguisher.

⒋Use the extinguisher

It can be difficult to think clearly during a fire. One method to help you remember how to use an extinguisher is to remember "PASS":

►P-Pull: Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher.

►A-Aim: Aim low. Point the nozzle at the bottom of the fire.

►S-Squeeze (挤压): Squeeze the handle to let out the extinguishing chemicals.

►S-Sweep: Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is put out.

⒌Keep an eye on the fire

After the fire appears to be out, continue to watch the fire area to make sure it doesn't start burning again. If the fire starts again, repeat the "PASS".

⑹Get toa safe place

Once the fire is out, or if you are unable to put it out, find a place out of reach of the fire.

Zou Bin was considered as a bit of a strange child when he began building walls with bricks at the age of 16. While others tried to build walls as quickly as possible because they were paid according to the number of bricks they laid. Zou had high standards and pulled his walls down if he thought they weren't good enough. That effort of trying to be perfect may explain why he became the first Chinese person to win a prize in bricklaying at World Skills in 2015.
