For centuries, humans have used words and body movements to express their needs and ideas. Do animals also communicate with clear goals?

A new study shows that elephants can also use gestures (姿势) on purpose to tell what they want. Scientists studied 17 African elephants in a nature park in Zimbabwe. They gave the elephants two plates. One had six apples, and the other was empty. When the elephants saw the plates, they used clear gestures to ask for apples. If they only got one apple instead of six, they tried gestures—like hitting the ground with a stick or throwing sand—to ask for more. In total, scientists recorded 38 different kinds of gestures.

Think about the difference between moving your hand away from the fire without thinking, and pointing at the fire to warn a friend. That difference lies in "intentions". Scientists divide intentions into three levels of difficulty. The zero level is to react (反应) to a direct feeling or touch, like moving away from pain. The first level is to influence others' behavior for some result. For example, someone makes others do something for their need. The second level is to change others' opinions.     ▲  They used body movements to ask scientists to give them apples. Their movements were not by accident. They did these on purpose to get what they wanted.

This research suggests that the ability for purposeful communication may be more widespread across the animal kingdom than we thought.

①Many of you may know the Venus flytrap (捕蝇草). It's a small plant that looks a bit scary. People often see it as something fun and unusual. Lots of curious kids and even adults use a pencil to touch its traps (陷阱). They want to see how quickly the traps close! But do you know that the Venus flytrap isn't the only plant that "eats" other things? There are over 600 kinds of carnivorous (肉食性的) plants. These plants learned to catch and eat other things in different ways, and this ability developed on its own at least six times in the world of flowering plants.

②Why do these plants "eat" insects? It's not for energy, because like other plants, they can make their own food through photosynthesis (光合作用). The real reason is to get important nutrients (养分) like nitrogen. Most plants get these nutrients from soil, but carnivorous plants live in places where the soil is poor.

③Carnivorous plants have different ways to catch insects. For example, some plants like pitcher plants have leaves shaped like cups. Insects fall into these "cups" and can't get out. Other carnivorous plants such as sundews and butterworts have sticky leaves. When an insect lands on them, it gets stuck. And of course, the Venus flytrap has its famous traps that close quickly around insects. Most of these plants eat insects. But some big pitcher plants can even eat frogs and mice!

④Sadly, many carnivorous plants are in danger. They usually grow in only a few places. As people take up their homes or collect them too much, these amazing plants might disappear forever. We should try to protect them so that we can still see these wonderful plants in the future.

Green Campus, Start from Me

Our school is like a big family, but I have noticed some bad habits. 

On May 15, 2026, the first "Robot Nurse" was officially put into use in a hospital in Shanghai. The robot, named Xiao An, can help take patients' temperature, hand out medicine, and even talk with patients to cheer them up. 

Xiao An looks like a small white cart with a screen on top. It moves around the hospital on its own, avoiding people and objects. When a patient presses a button, Xiao An comes to the bedside and asks, "How can I help you?" 

The robot is especially useful at night when there are fewer nurses. It can check on patients every hour and send information to the main computer. If a patient needs emergency help, Xiao An will call a real nurse immediately. 

"Xiao An is not here to replace nurses," said Doctor Li, head of the hospital. "It helps nurses do their jobs more easily so they can spend more time on important tasks." 

Some patients were shy at first, but soon they liked talking to Xiao An. "It's very friendly and never gets tired," said a patient. The hospital plans to buy more such robots next year.

Reading is a good habit. It opens a window to the w for us. By reading, we can learn about different c and histories. We can also get a lot of k from books. 

Many successful people have the habit of reading every day. They say reading helps them become more c and wise. For students, reading can i their writing and speaking skills. 

However, some young people spend too much time on short videos on their phones. They should r the time on screens and pick up a book instead. Libraries are great p to read quietly. There are books for all a groups, from children to the elderly.

Another good idea is to join a reading club. There you can s your thoughts with others and learn from each other.

Do you often feel stressed before exams? You are not alone. Many students feel nervous when tests are coming.  

First, prepare well. Make a study plan and follow it. 

Second, get enough sleep. Staying up late only makes you more tired.  

 Exercise helps reduce stress and clears your mind. 

Another useful tip is to practice deep breathing. When you feel anxious, take slow, deep breaths. Also, talk to someone you trust, like your parents or teachers. They can give you support and encouragement.

Finally, remember that one exam does not decide your whole life.  Just do your best, and be proud of your hard work.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we learn languages. Many apps now use AI to help users practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing. For example, some apps can talk with you like a real person. They correct your mistakes and give you instant feedback. 

One big advantage of AI language learning is personalization. AI can remember which words you often forget and create exercises just for you. It can also adjust the difficulty based on your progress. This makes learning more efficient than traditional classes, where every student follows the same plan. 

However, AI is not perfect. It cannot fully understand human emotions or cultural meanings. Sometimes the sentences AI creates sound strange or unnatural. Also, talking to an AI is not the same as talking to a real person. Real conversations include body language, tone, and shared experiences. 

Experts say the best way to learn a language is to combine AI tools with real human interaction. Use AI for practice and basic skills, but find a language partner or teacher to have real conversations. That way, you get the best of both worlds.

Have you ever heard of "forest bathing"? It is not actually taking a bath in the forest. Forest bathing means spending time in a forest to relax your mind and body. It started in Japan in the 1980s and is now popular around the world. 

Studies show that forest bathing can lower stress, improve mood, and even strengthen the immune system (免疫系统). When people walk slowly through a forest, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the sounds of nature, their body produces fewer stress hormones (激素). 

Scientists also found that trees give off natural oils called phytoncides. These oils help protect trees from insects. When people breathe them in, their body increases the number of natural killer cells, which fight illness. 

You don't need to go to a deep, wild forest. A local park with many trees can work too. The key is to slow down, put away your phone, and use all your senses. Look at the green leaves, touch the tree bark, smell the earth, and listen to the birds. 

Forest bathing is free and easy. So next time you feel tired or worried, try taking a "bath" in nature. Your body and mind will thank you.
