Ways to Victory

Hello, everyone. Today, I'd like to talk about ways to victory. 

Zhou Qi is a 17-year-old student from Hangzhou. Zhejiang. Last September he broke the Guinness (吉尼斯) World Record for the most single skips in one minute, with a result of 374. The record had stood unbroken for ten years. Daisuke Mimura from Japan held it with 348 skips in 2013.

Interestingly, Zhou's new record is not even his personal best. "My best performance was 396 times in one minute. That was done in the 2nd Primary and Secondary School Students' Rope Skip-ping Championship in 2020. My coach said I had already broken the world record. It was at that time that I made up my mind to apply for the Guinness World Record," Zhou said.

However, the road to success was far from smooth. For years, Zhou practised with a special steel rope designed for competition. It's light and strong. But because of the rope he used, his first Guinness application was considered invalid (无效). After online communication with the records management team, Zhou quickly changed to a common rope recognized (认证) by the Guinness World Records. He soon got used to it.

Whatever kind of rope Zhou used, his strict training stood him in good sporting condition. Zhou has been in the school rope skipping team for seven years. He has jumped rope for about four hours each day. He would also run around the playground to improve his physical strength.

Now as a high school student, Zhou said he'll put his studies first. But he won't stop training and still hopes to beat his own record one day.

The game of Go (围棋) is a popular board game all over the world. It  in China more than 4,000 years ago. In China, Go is considered  "hand conversations" as well. Players communicate with each other through the game. In other words, they "talk" through the placing of pieces on the board. The metaphor (比喻) was first  by Zhi Daolin, a Buddhist master of the Jin Dynasty. It shows the nature of the game. While knowledgeable people of his time often lost  in philosophical (哲学的) discussions on life and universe, he preferred to play Go. He thought it was  of philosophy of life.

Master Go players often feel like they are playing a game in real life. They use the that they play the game in their real life. Sometimes one can move forward; sometimes one must slow down. Sometimes one can face the challenger ; sometimes one must take an indirect method. The purpose of playing Go is not just to win, but also, more importantly, to achieve wisdom in the game. The players work  to play a good game, instead of fighting as enemies.

Many people has learned Go  they were children. Through Go, they can learn more about  to think more wisely and to solve the problem in a proper way. At the same time, they can have fun and it is good for their study.

①Almost everybody has had pimples (青春痘). It is a normal part of growing up. When kids reach teens, their bodies experience many changes. During this period, most teenagers often develop pimples. Also, many people continue to have pimples after teens. What can a teenager or an adult do to deal with pimples? Unluckily, many ways are really just myths.

②Many people believe that popping (挤) pimples is the best way.    ▲   . For that reason, doctors normally encourage people not to pop their pimples.

③Also, do you think that washing your face often will be helpful? Of course, it is a good idea, but washing your face too much could make the skin painful, making the pimples even worse.

④Another widely believed myth is that not wearing make-up (化妆) can help lower the chance of developing pimples. In fact, some kinds of make-up actually have special medicine in them to fight pimples. As a result, not all of them are bad for you.

⑤Along with make-up, people believe that eating fatty foods or chocolate can cause pimples. The truth is that eating a candy or a piece of pizza will not cause pimples. Even so, both teenagers and adults should still try to eat foods that are good for their bodies and their skin.

⑥Another myth is that stress can cause pimples. Stress comes in many forms, like a big exam at school or problems with friends. While it is true that stress can cause a person's skin to create extra oil, this extra oil does necessarily cause more pimples.

The China International Search and Rescue Team (CISAR) was formed in 2001. It 1 help and hope to those whose lives are changed by a storm, an earthquake, or any other natural disaster (灾难).

After long and careful training, the Chinese team went on its first international rescue (救援) tasks 2 in 2003. That year, the team helped save 3 after earthquakes in Algeria and Iran. It was the first time that the CISAR had worked outside China, and the team won high praise for their bravery and skill. Since then, the CISAR has completed lots of rescue 4 —they braved terrible conditions to rescue people in Indonesia, Haiti and Pakistan.

Rescue workers are trained to find people, treat injuries, and 5 food, water, and other things. They have to be able to do difficult work when it is very 6 . For example, there is usually no electricity or water after a disaster, and there may be illnesses and accidents. Rescue workers get to save lives, but they must also deal with the dead. That means they have to be 7 in both body and mind. Rescue workers must have big hearts, too. It takes lots of love and 8 to risk their own lives to save someone else's. The members of the CISAR are always ready to go wherever help is 9 .

Rescue workers have to leave their homes and families for a job that 10 little pay and less sleep. We can't imagine how much they have sacrificed (牺牲) selflessly. We don't even know most of their names. They are really true heroes!

Once upon a time, there was a little boy. His parents were poor farmers. They couldn't pay for a worker, 1 the boy had to help with the housework. He worked very hard.

Rose: Nothing much. How about you?

Jack:  We grew some vegetables.

Jack: Certainly. First, dig a hole, put a plant into it. Then, put the earth back. Finally, water the plant.

Rose: Oh, sounds kind of difficult. Did you feel tired?

Jack: Yes, a little.  

Rose: Great! What else did you do?

Jack:  

Rose: Wow! How meaningful it was!

Jack: We plan to go there next weekend. Would you like to join us?

Rose:  I can't wait!

These days, many parents help their kids with their homework.

I go to the local stores once a week for my weekly shopping. Each time, in each store, I end up with  very full shopping basket. 

About a year ago, I took part  an activity—30-Day Gratitude（感恩） Challenge. It changed my life for the better. After the activity, I  a personal choice—I would offer to allow whomever was behind me in line to go ahead of me, no matter how  his or her basket was. 

I discovered an interesting fact during the year. Younger people, under the of 40, took my offer right ; for people at my age; over 55, I needed to give the offer for about 3 times; but for people over the age of 70, it was very difficult for  to accept my offer. 

But every week, in each store, my offer is finally  every time. This started as a conscious（刻意的） kindness,  now it is a habit. I like the idea of a friend—practice a kindness until it becomes a（n） , and then move on to another kindness. 

Have you ever made a yearbook? Most high schools in the United States publish a yearbook once a year, usually in spring. It is a record of the school year—a "book of memories" for the students. 

Inside a yearbook is each student's photo. The seniors are graduating soon, and their photos appear first. Next are the juniors. They are one year behind the seniors. Then come the second-year students. The last photos are the first-year students. The yearbook is not only about students. The teachers have photos, too. 

The yearbook also has photos and descriptions of extracurricular activities（课外活动）. These are activities that students do after school, such as the chess club and Spanish club. There is even a yearbook club. Students in this club write, design and take photos all year for the yearbook. 

In the yearbook, some students receive special titles. The seniors vote and choose the "class clown" （a funny student）, the "most likely to succeed" （a student who got the best grades）, and the "best dressed" （a student with a good fashion sense）. There are also other awards. 

Students usually sign each other's yearbooks. This is especially important for the seniors because they are graduating. Students write notes to each other, such as "We had a lot of fun. " or "I'll never forget you. " They also write about the fun and funny experiences they shared in school together. 

One Sunday, I walked to the supermarket. As usual, there I picked all things on the shopping list my mother gave me. As I turned to go out, I saw a beautiful dress in the window. I turned away, feeling sad that I could 1 own such a dress. 

Outside, I couldn't take my mind of that dress. I worked so hard to help my family but I got 2 in return, just more chores to do. I was so angry that I 3 to realize the apples were falling out of the bag onto the road. Suddenly, I saw a pair of hands, handing me two of the apples. I 4 and saw a homeless old man. His clothes were old. But his eyes were soft and kind.

Seeing him disappear into the crowd, I stopped feeling 8 for myself. The homeless old man "taught" me so much. Life was never easy for him. He had reminded me 9 his big smile that my life was good enough, and there were worse things than not having a dress. 

My mother will give me the list next Sunday. I will make the same 10 to the supermarket and probably see something I want but cannot have, too. But before I start to feel down, I will remember the kind stranger with the big smile.
