Qingming is the most important festival in spring. It is also named the Tomb - sweeping Day. It comes in early April. On that day, people visit tombs to honor the dead (者). They always spend some time cleaning the tomb area. They usually plant some trees near the tombs and decorate them with fresh flowers. But it's not just a day honoring the dead. It is also a good time to celebrate the coming of spring.

With the coming of spring, nature wakes up, dressing the world in green. Birds begin to build nests for their babies. In forests and fields, many animals have babies at this time of year. The days get longer and the weather gets warmer. In short, everything is new, clean and fresh. So, Qingming is also a happy time for people to do sports outdoors, such as flying kites, swimming and hiking. This is why this festival has been very popular for thousands of years.

Winter is cold. People live in warm houses. What do animals do? Animals are smart. They do many  amazing things to get through the winter. Some of them "migrate (迁徙)". This means they travel to other  where the weather is warmer or where they can find food.

Many birds migrate in autumn. Because the trip can be , some travel in large groups. Many fish migrate. They may swim south, or move into deeper and  water. Insects also migrate. Insects like earthworms move downward into the soil and some as far as six feet below the surface.

Some animals remain active in winter. They must fit the changing . Many make changes to their behaviour or bodies. To keep warm, animals may grow new and thicker fur in autumn. Some animals begin to collect their winter food in autumn.  it is very cold, they stay inside their homes. They can  the food they collect in autumn. Squirrels collect seeds and nuts. They are safe and warm in their homes in winter.

Some animals hibernate (冬眠) for part or all of the winter. This is a special and deep sleep. The temperature of the animals' bodies and their heartbeat and breath slow down. They use very little energy. In  words, these animals get ready for the winter  eating much food and storing it as body fat. They use this fat for energy while hibernating. Some also store food, like nuts to eat later in winter.

Dear Liza,

I will be ten years old on Friday, 22nd July. To celebrate my birthday, I will invite several friends and I hope that all of you will be able to come to the party on that day.

There will be two parts in my party. The first part will be at the swimming pool near your school. Please bring your swimsuit (游泳衣) and a change of clothes. We have planned some pool games. My parents will be at the pool to protect the swimmers. The pool party will be from 2 to 3 p.m.

The second part of the party will be at my house. A bus will take us all from the pool to my house. A singer is coming to my house. He will sing popular songs for us. I am sure you will enjoy them. The home party may last till 5 p.m. Please let me know by Friday, 15th July, whether you will come to my party, so that I will know how much food to prepare.
