Mother's Day

Many Chinese people will wonder what gifts to get for their moms on Mother's Day, but not many know Mother's Day is actually a festival from America, which started in the early 20th century and usually falls on the second Sunday of May. The festival came to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.

①Why does a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always educated children to love and respect their parents. From our textbooks, we can read many poems and stories which celebrate mother's love. Children in China grow up with the education of filial devotion (孝敬). ②On such a special day, people often use flowers to express love. Carnations are regarded as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily (虎百合). On the next Mother's Day, I will send my mom a bunch of tiger lily and a greeting card. Also, helping with housework is a good way to make my mom happy.

Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. ③What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.

In China, red is a  colour that can be found almost everywhere. It  a lot to every Chinese. It is the symbol of good luck and . We can see red on some big days, such as the Spring Festival or wedding days.  our great joy and wishes we often put up red lanterns, give Hong Bao or prepare other red items. Chinese red also stands  hard work and success. It  as the colour of Chinese national flag, reminding  of how Chinese people  for our country in the past. Today, more of us take red tours and sing red  which fill us with pride and strength to work harder. In conclusion, Chinese red  a significant role in our traditional culture.

China's New AI Surprises the World

On January 20, 2025, a Chinese company named Deep Seek made a new AI called Deep Seek-R1. This AI can do math problems, write computer codes and answer questions like the best AIs in the world. But it costs much less money to build. The team used only $5.58 million (much cheaper than other AIs) and 2,048 computer parts for two months. This proves that smart ideas are better than just spending a lot of money.

Deep Seek-R1 is free to use and people can even change it. On its first day, more than 19,000 computer experts around the world started using it. A German scientist said, "Using R1 for experiments costs only $10, but other AIs need $300." Even a top scientist from Meta (a big Company) said: "This free AI could change the world."

The companies are now worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion on AI research! Experts say China is becoming a leader in AI very fast. A report in Nature (a famous science magazine) called R1 a "big success", showing that good ideas are more important than expensive tools.

A Deep Seek engineer said, "We want AI to help everyone, not just rich people." With R1, China proves that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

It was Sunday, the weather was sunny. After I finished my homework, my parents decided to take me to the old people's home. At first, I refused, because I wanted to play with my friends. But my parents said it was good for me to take some after-class activities. Thinking about it for a moment, I agreed.

The old people's home is not far from our home, so my father advised us to go there on foot. It turned out that walking there was a good choice. It was friendly to the environment. When we arrived at the place, the old people welcomed us warmly. Then we gave something we bought yesterday to them. Later, I shared my school life with them and cleaned their rooms. Seeing their smiling faces, I felt a sense of warmth at the bottom of my heart. At that moment, I suddenly realized that I should help others in need. What a great decision my parents made! This was really the best thing that I had ever done. Being helpful to others was really good. The feeling was amazing.
