Having trouble getting out of bed for school on Monday mornings? This year's World Sleep Day on March 21 has brought more attention to the problem of teenagers not getting enough sleep. 

Many teenagers feel sleepy during the day. Homework, after - school activities and using electronic devices (电子设备) are all reasons. Take homework as an example. Students may have to stay up late to finish it and may not sleep well as a result. According to USAFacts, 77. 3 percent of high school students in the US do not get enough sleep.

Sleep also helps teenagers become more creative. This relationship was first studied in the late 20th century, when scientists at Loughborough University in the UK did a test. They compared the creative performance of people who didn't sleep well and those who sleep well. The first group did worse on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. They kept making the same mistakes and were unable to come up with new ideas. 

More recently, in 2023, the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that "sleep onset (开始)" is especially helpful for creativity. This special sleep stage happens when we are just starting to fall asleep. If people are guided to dream about a certain task during sleep onset, they can do that task more creatively after waking up, according to MIT News. Next time you go to bed, make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark so you can sleep well and have more creative ideas when you wake up. 

Red is more than just a colour. It is also a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. When it comes to red, we have to mention a great dynasty in our history—the Tang Dynasty. 

Most women in the world have fallen in love with red makeup (妆容) since ancient times, but the women of the Tang Dynasty were the only ones who took the preference for red makeup to the extreme (极致). Many great makeup styles (样式) appeared. After thousands of years, the beauty of women in the age of red makeup can still be seen today. 

If we go beyond the times and come back to the red colour itself, we'll find that in our traditional culture, bright red is always a necessary and important colour in wedding ceremonies (婚礼仪式). "Wearing red", also known as "wearing coloured silk", as a custom (风俗) full of the meaning of good luck, is not only an important custom in the history of ancient Chinese marriage ceremonies but also a custom that the ancients would follow on many important events. 

Besides, ancient people would also "wear red" on important events such as when the top scholars became the "first" on the imperial examination lists. As the poem says, "On a fine spring day, on a galloping horse, one riding high could enjoy all flowers in Chang'an in one day. " With the great joy of "becoming famous overnight", "wearing red" became one of the necessary parts of ceremony for them. 

We've got so many colours on the land but the Chinese people's love for red is deep into the bone. Especially wherever our national flag is, there is a lighthouse of belief. If belief has a colour, it must be the Chinese red. We believe that every Chinese has a touch of proud (自豪的) Chinese red in his heart. 

There was once a wise old man named Derek. One day his young nephew (侄子) Gary came to visit him. Gary was sad about his little progress in learning the guitar. He tried hard, but he just couldn't improve.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI's GPT-4, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5. 58 million (1/70 of OpenAI's cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money. 

DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than Open AI's model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies. 

DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost 10 instead of 300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, "This kind of free AI could change the world."

US tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend over $65 billion on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a "big step forward", proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools. 

As a DeepSeek engineer said, "We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use." With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money. 

How was your sleep last night? World Sleep Day fell on March 17th this year. The topic was "sleep is important for health". How can we have healthy sleep? Take a look at some tips.

First, wake up naturally. Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies showed that when you wake up because of a loud alarm, your breathing will go up from 16 to 24 breaths a minute. Your heart will have 10 more beats every minute. Your blood pressure (血压) will rise.

"This is a very unhappy way to start the day," a sleep scientist said. You'll feel worse if you lie down again to get a few more minutes of sleep. This will make your body even sleepier.

But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel confused between sleep and being awake. Our bodies don't know the real time. That's why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping. So, it's necessary for us to sleep early and get up early.

Once a tortoise (乌龟) and two swans (天鹅) lived by a lake. They were very good friends. They spent many hours happily together.

To their bad luck, there was no rain that year. The lake became dry. So they had to leave the lake to look for another place to live.

The two swans could fly easily, but for the tortoise it was difficult. The three of them began to worry and wonder, unsure of what to do next.
