 Speaking of all these changes, Li's face lights up and his wrinkles(皱纹) turn into smiles, saying that the change is not just about Puyang or Henan but about all of China. 

Looking ahead, Li shows even greater confidence than 30 years ago. 

Feng Zhiliang, a 43-year-old bus driver from Handan City, Hebei Province, has impressed many Chinese netizens by reporting bus announcements in both Chinese and English. 

His idea of using two languages for broadcasting was inspired (激励) by a conversation with a foreign passenger during the Spring Festival. "I said ‘Hello, Happy New Year' to him, and he made a thumbs-up (竖起大拇指) sign and said ‘Very good, Happy New Year"". 

As he found there are quite a number of foreign passengers on the No. 38 bus he operates, Feng decided to use English at work to improve the service quality. 

However, learning English from the beginning was not easy. He registered (注册) for online courses, explored various English materials, and used translation software.  He also made time for learning by setting aside an hour every night after work and using his 20-minute work break during the daytime for practice. 

After three years of learning, Feng started two-language broadcasting first during the evening rush hour. "I was a bit nervous at first. The support and praise from passengers encouraged me to keep going, " Feng said. 

In order to provide passengers with a richer travel experience, Feng checked the tour guidebook and started giving out more information about nearby sights along the route. 

Now, Feng has a following of supporters, some of whom specially choose to ride the bus he drives. 

Feng hopes that his two-language broadcasts can help more tourists learn about Handan and fall in love with this city. "Although we are in ordinary positions, we can make contributions (贡献) to the society and make our lives meaningful, " Feng said.

A broken-hearted incident happened in Zibo City, Shandong Province, where Wang Long, a 36-year-old man, lost his life while saving a mother and her child from drowning(溺水) during the May Day holiday. 

It took place at a local riverside where Wang was enjoying free time with his own family. 

At around 2:30 pm on May3, 2024, a six-year-old boy fell into the deep water area while playing in the shallow area. In a panic (惊慌), his mother followed, trying to reach her son, but both ended up being trapped in(被困在) the river. 

Hearing the cry for help, Wang, without hesitation, quickly jumped into the river to save the two persons. A video recorded at the scene showed that Wang soon reached the mother and took her to the riverbank, while the young boy was still struggling (挣扎) at a farther place. 

Wang went back again and lifted the boy up high with his two hands while the water kept flowing over his head. Trying to stand straight, he handed the boy to his father who came to help. 

After bringing the mother and her child to safety, Wang himself drowned in the river. The attempt(努力) to save him didn't succeed unluckily. 

"My husband is slightly afraid of water, and even has difficulty swimming. It didn't occur to(想到) me that he would jump into deep water area to save people, " said Ms Mao, Wang's wife. "But he is always warm-hearted.  Whoever is in need, he would never turn his back and always offers timely help. "

Wang's courageous act has left a deep impression on the saved family and received praise from the local communities and the Internet.

When Qi Hongbo, a respectable member of a rescue team and a volunteer for public welfare (公益事业), died at the age of 47 on May 31, 2024, his family made an important decision to donate his body in order to help more people. 

Qi, who worked as a truck driver in Zibo City, Shandong Province, also served as a deputy leader of a rescue team in Zibo. Throughout his life, he had been committed to public service. 

In the eyes of his wife Chang Li, Qi always eagerly volunteered whenever there was a call for help. He spent almost all of his free time on voluntary service. 

In August 2021, when a sudden flood hit Henan Province, Qi, together with his team members, rushed to Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan Province, to help with rescuing people. Then again in December 2023when a powerful earthquake hit Jishishan County, Gansu Province, he and his team members took action to deal with the disaster at once. 

According to Liu Dong, the leader of the rescue team, Qi kept his mobile phone on for 24 hours so that he could respond quickly whenever needed. 

However, no one thought that Qi would lose his life in the volunteer service he loved. On the afternoon of May 24, Qi fainted (昏厥) while volunteering in Zibo. When he fell, he hit his head on a stone. Despite emergency medical aid, he was diagnosed brain dead. 

In the terrible sadness, his wife and son made a difficult but great decision to donate Qi's liver, kidneys, corneas, and other organs(器官).

There's a popular Chinese saying that usually kindles (激起) two different discussions. 

The saying says du wanjuan shu, xing wanli lu, or translates literally as"to read ten (千) books and travel ten thousand miles". 

The saying was first from Notes from the Painting-Meditation Studio (写) by Dong Qichang, a famous painter and politician in the late years of the Ming Dynasty. 

Dong's saying was (鼓励) people to study more and gain(获得) knowledge, then put what they learned into (实践) while they' re further broadening their horizons(视野). 

(然而), later on, some people twisted(曲解) Dong's saying to"to travel ten thousand miles beats reading ten thousand books". 

The latter idea obviously stresses that experience is more (重要的) and meaningful than what one can get from books. 

* The two ideas, no matter how you understand them, both compare (阅读) with traveling. 

But this is not a unique Chinese idea. (西方人) have had similar reflections. 

For example, Augustine of Hippo, a philosopher, once (说), "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page. "

David Rockefeller, an American banker, once said, "I am a passionate traveler, and from the time I was a child, travel formed me as much as my formal education. "

All these sayings seem to agree on one point: By seeing new places and meeting new people, travel can be as (令人激动的) and educational as reading books. 

The unspoken lesson is: Do both as much as possible. 

For most Chinese parents, whether they live in a city or a village, a college education for their children is the ticket to future success. But a Chinese1 says differently. 

First used in the Miscellaneous Records of Clear Wave by Zhou Hui during the 12th century, the saying says, "There are 360 trades and every trade 2 its own zhuangyuan. " 

*Zhuangyuan was a title conferred(授予) on the person receiving the highest 3 in the imperial examination in feudal China. 

In other words, the saying means 4 may become outstanding in any trade through will, talent and hard work. 

Some people think that an earlier folk story is where the saying comes from. 

As the story goes, a new zhuangyuan was5 through a market on a big horse. When a man carrying firewood and a vendor(小贩) of cooking oil blocked his way, he shouted to them, "You get out of my 6 !"

But the two replied, "Get off your high horse. You only know how to write, 7 you can't do anything we are good at. "

Then, the man with the firewood 8 his skill with an ax(斧头), and the vendor exactly weighed the oil in a bottle without using a scale(秤). The Zhuangyuan was 9 by their skills. 

"Ah, in 36 trades, each has its own top masters, " he sighed. 

The number 36 was later changed to 360 to reflect a very wide range of trades. 

Today, the Chinese saying is often used to tell young people who don't do well in exams or can't 10 schooling(学校教育) to use their skills and stand out in a job. 

In Chinese artistic painting, plays and especially folklore (民间传说), one may often meet a group known as the Eight Immortals(八仙). 

They have been deeply loved by Chinese people since they first appeared in texts of the Tang and Song dynasties. 

They are not the stereotype deities (刻板的神仙) in traditional Chinese culture. 

First, they are not born immortals at all. . Among them are a former military general, a relative of the imperial family, a scholar, a Taoist and a beggar. 

Second, each of the Eight Immortals has a particular tool with a special magical power. For example, Tieguai Li, always carries an iron crutch(拐杖) and a bottle gourd (葫芦); ; and HanZhongli, who has the power to create silver and gold, is usually seen holding a large palm-leaf fan. 

Both as a group and individuals(个人), the immortals have lots of colorful, funny and sometimes strange stories. 

According to legend, the group was invited every year to attend the Conference of the Magical Peach, hosted by Queen Mother of the West. 

Instead of riding a cloud across, as they all can do, one of them suggested that they each use their special power to sail across the sea. 

They threw their magic objects, such as the big fan, lotus flower and bottle gourd, into the sea, quickly forming seagoing boats to carry them to the party. 

Once, a necklace was lost from the house of a rich man. There were many servants working in that house. Naturally, it was suspected (怀疑) that the necklace had been stolen by someone of the servants. The rich man asked each of his servants but no one admitted (承认) the charge. So, he made a complaint(控告) before the judge. 

The judge called all the servants to come. They went to the judge and said they didn't do it, just like before. The judge was very wise and clever. He came up with a way to tell who the real thief was. He gave each servant a stick of the same length and asked them to return the sticks the next day. He also mentioned that the stick of the real thief would increase an inch by magical touch. 

All the servants went back home and kept their sticks as they were innocent (无辜的). * But the servant who stole the necklace cut the stick by an inch thinking that it really would increase an inch within the night. 

The next day when all the servants gave back their sticks to the judge, the real thief was easily found. So the wise judge recovered the necklace and sent the real thief to jail(监狱) as punishment.

When mountains, rivers and something else block the view, you may wonder whether there's still a road ahead. Be optimistic(乐观的). * Chinese people will use two common sayings to tell you that there will always be a road ahead.

One of the sayings comes from a book called Civilian Mottos from Ancient China, published around the late 16th century. It says, "When a chariot(马车) arrives in front of a mountain, there's always a road there; when a boat floats toward a bridge, it will naturally go straight. "

The meaning here is that when you drive a chariot to a mountain, there must be a road you can take to go forward, and water currents (水流) will naturally straighten a boat when it goes to pass underneath a bridge. In more common language: Don't worry about what's going to happen in the future; things will work themselves out. 

The second saying is from two lines from a poem written by Lu You, a great Southern Song Dynasty historian and poet. 

The two lines read shanchong shuifu yiwulu, liu' an huaming youyicun. It translates as, "Mountains roll beyond mountains, and streams double back to streams. I doubt if there's still a road and then, with shady willows and bright flowers, another village suddenly appears ahead. "

This popular expression is often used to offer comfort and encouragement (鼓舞) during difficult times and to encourage people to face the world calmly. 

There's a Western saying that follows the same idea, "When God closes one door, he opens a window. "

For more than 1, 300 years in feudal China, a system of the imperial examination(科举制度)was used to select government officials. Here is a story about a student taking the imperial examination. 

One day, on his way to the capital to sit the final imperial examination, a young man spent a night at an old temple. After supper, he had an interesting conversation with an old monk (和尚)there. 

The monk said that people thought everything in the world is either male or female, and he asked his guest how to tell the male of seawater or trees from the female. 

The young man thought it over but couldn't come up with an answer. 

The monk then explained that for the seawater, billows (巨浪) are male and waves are female because males are usually bigger than females. For trees, the pine(松) tree is male because the Chinese character for it contains a male radical(部首), and the plum(梅子) tree is female because it has a female component(成分) in the word. 

The student found the answer interesting but not very excellent. 

However, it happened that the title of the thesis(论文)for the imperial examination that year was On the Gender of All Things in the World. 

So, the student quoted what the monk said in his thesis. Surprisingly, he not only passed the examination but came in first. 

* The young man was so grateful to the old monk that he later presented the man with a tablet (匾) with the words, "To chat with you for one night is better than to study for 10 years. "

China's new hit TV show To the Wonder has made Altay in Xinjiang a new popular place for young people to visit. They  in love with the beautiful views and the simple and heart-warming lives of the local people.

One of the more touching moments in the movie is when Ederle's trainer, Jabez Wolffe, puts sleeping pills into her tea to stop her crossing the Channel. There's no proof that Wolffe actually did this, but people think the real Wolffe was just as jealous (嫉妒的) as the character in the movie. That might be why he took her out of the water before she finished swimming, saying it was for her own safety!

NASA has given SpaceX an $843 million contract (合同) to build a vehicle that will help to des troy the International Space Station (ISS). 

SpaceX, a company that's controlled(控制) by Elon Musk, will build the vehicle  the mission will be led by NASA. 

The ISS was launched in 1998 and it's likely that it (have) to be removed from space in the next few years. 

The station is operated by space agencies from the US, Europe, Japan, Canada and Russia.  All of(they) have said they'll operate the station until 2030 except Russia, which has said it will operate it2028. 

Teams of (astronaut) have been living in the space station since 2000. During this time, they (do) more than 3, 300 experiments in space.

It's expected that the SpaceX vehicle will pull the ISS through space before (land) it in the sea. Both are likely to break apart as they re-enter Earth's atmosphere. 

But experts say it won't be easy to bring such a large space station back to Earth(safe). 

Meghan Bartels from Scientific American said, "The orbiting laboratory contains about  much internal space as a six-bedroom house spread over an area the size of a football field, and that it weighs almost as much as three blue whales."

It's not yet known what  vehicle will look like or exactly when the mission will take place.

For years, kids have dreamed of becoming astronauts. And according to a new survey, many young children 1 they'll travel to space during their lives. 

In May, 2024, a British education company 2 RM Technology surveyed more than 1, 000 elementary school children. 

And 57% of the 4-to 7-year-olds surveyed said they think they'll get the 3 to visit space.  Almost two out of five said they think humans will be able to live on another planet in the next 10 years.

A tech billionaire took the first private spacewalk, hundreds of kilometers above Earth, on September 12, 2024. 

Jared Isaacman teamed up with Elon Musk's SpaceX to test the company's new spacesuits on his flight. 

Until now, only professional astronauts working for government agencies had done spacewalks. 

They' re high-risk endeavors (尝试), although there isn't always much walking involved. Astronauts at the International Space Station often need to move across the great structure for repairs, always traveling in pairs and carrying gear. Station spacewalks can last seven to eight hours. 

But Isaacman's spacewalk was simple and quick. He kept a hand or foot attached to(贴着) the capsule the whole time as he moved his arms and legs. He was outside for about 10 minutes. 

SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis also went out into space once Isaacman was back inside. 

The two other passengers, Scott Poteet, a former US Air Force pilot, and SpaceX engineer Anna Menon stayed strapped to their seats inside.  All the crew members wore SpaceX's new spacesuits to protect themselves as the entire capsule was exposed to the vacuum of space when the hatch(舱门) was opened. 

The operation was planned carefully— it had to be. Trying out new spacesuits from a spacecraft new to spacewalking added to the risk. 

Isaacman, who is the CEO and founder of the Shift4 credit card-processing company, hasn't said how much he spent on the flight. 

It won't have been cheap, but some people are glad that private individuals (私人) are financing space travel, meaning governments send less public money into orbit. 

Japanese scientists have created a satellite made of wood, which will be launched into space as early as 2024. 

Called LignoSat, the box-shaped satellite is small enough to be held in your hand, but inside it are experiments that will show how well a wooden device can work in space. 

LignoSat is the result of a project by Kyoto University and the Sumitomo Forestry company to find new materials for satellites that will be better for our planet. 

Until now, all satellites have been made of metal. When they re-enter(再次进入) Earth's atmosphere, they burn up, leaving tiny particles of aluminum(铝颗粒) that could be very bad for our environment, and may even des troy the ozone layer (臭氧层). A wooden satellite, however, would burn up into ash (灰烬), which is far less harmful. 

Researchers from Kyoto University tested different kinds of wood— first in laboratories, and then sending three samples to the International Space Station, where they were tested in the vacuum(真空) of space for nearly a year. 

 The scientists found that the wood was not damaged by being left in space, which the leader of the project, Koji Murata, said was probably because there is no oxygen in space for wood to burn in, and no living creatures that might cause it to rot(腐烂). 

Different types of wood were tested, and LignoSat has been made of magnolia wood, which was found to be    ▲ . 

The launch date for LignoSat has not yet been decided, but it should go up on a US rocket some day in2024. The satellite will then spend six months in space before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. 

If LignoSat works well in space and the project is a success, then wood could be used to make more satellites in the future.
