What time is it? The answer you give can be different, because you are in different Earth's time zones(时区). But how could you tell the time if you aren't anywhere on Earth?

Scientists are now thinking of creating a lunar(月球的) time zone. They believe it would be better for astronauts to communicate by using Moon Time, as they travel to, from, and across the Moon. At the moment, astronauts are using time zones of their own countries. But there could be safety problems caused by the differences in time-telling.

    ▲    Gravity(引力) influences how quickly or slowly time passes. Since gravity is weaker on the Moon, clocks run a bit faster there. After 24 hours, a lunar clock would be 56 microseconds ahead of a clock on Earth. Another point to consider is that a full day on Earth is about 24 hours between two sunsets. While on the Moon, it is nearly 709 hours, about 29.5 Earth days. This means that lunar nights can be around two weeks long, with only the Earth and the stars in the sky. With all this to think about, scientists need to decide whether it would be better to follow a time zone on Earth, or for the Moon to have its own special zone, which would have much longer days.

Scientists must consider other problems too. For example, who should be responsible for keeping the time zone going? And how can it be made practical for astronauts to use?

There are more countries planning Moon trips in the future. The idea of creating a time zone on the Moon would make these easier. And if a lunar time zone is set up, scientists could create time zones for other planets like Mars.

Henry found a job in a bookstore after he finished middle school. He wanted to get rich  he wouldn't do anything.

I went up to the stage and read my story, My Father's Son. When I finished, people stood up and cheered. I saw my father blowing his nose. Tears were running down my  (妈妈的)face. Dad cleared his throat and put his hand on my  (肩膀). "Son, this is the proudest moment of my life."

It was the proudest moment of my life, too. Maybe I'll  (从不) be a hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it was enough just to be my father's son.

Do you know that tea, the most popular drink in the world (after water), was invented  ? It is said that a Chinese ruler called Shen Nong was the first  tea as a drink. One day Shen Nong was boiling drinking water over an open fire. Some  from a tea plant fell into the water and remained there for some time. It produced a nice smell, so he tasted the brown water. It was quite delicious, and so, one of the world's favorite drinks came into being. It is believed that tea  to Korea and Japan until the 6th and 7th centuries. In England, tea appeared around 1660, but in less than 100 years, it had become the  drink. Nowadays many people know about tea culture. Yet the Chinese are without doubt the ones who understand the nature of tea. 

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Many companies have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.

So how? The cars have sensors(感应器) all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统) are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.

Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while "driving" would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people—they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.

However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun—I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made—should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?

I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car—but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.

I came to the United States from Africa to live with my uncle Jim in Maryland. One year later, I lost my sight because of a serious illness.

Jim told me not to go out. He worried I would get lost or hit by a car. But I was dogged. I told him I'd pay attention. I believed I'd succeed. I must succeed. I must put my will into action. I dreamed of being a broadcaster.

Then a neighbor told me that a public library in Washington D.C. was offering a free course, specially designed for blind people. This was an important chance for me.

But how would I map my way? I knew that the American singer Ray Charles, also blind, got around on his own without a cane(手杖). His secret was to count steps. But I couldn't seem to do that way. Instead I developed my imagination, sensing the layout(布局) of places I visited and taking notes of landmarks in my mind.

At first, I would have to stop to imagine and map a new space in my mind. The next time I visited that place, I'd use that to find the way. Today, I am used to doing it. But I've still lost my way many times. I'd have to swallow my pride to ask for help, not thinking what others think or say about me.

Sometimes I'd be down and I'd consider giving up. Perhaps my uncle was right. Maybe I'd stay home and wait until someone came to help. On those days when I lost my way, I'd go to bed with a bad feeling. I had a strong wish to beat blindness and be successful, and that was usually enough to get me out of bed the next day and try again.

Along the way I learned to be patient with myself and realized that asking for help didn't diminish(贬低) me in any way. I've got three academic degrees so far.

Today, I'm a reporter and broadcaster. I've achieved my dream.

Yes, I've lost my way many times and found it again. Yes, I've come close to being hit by a car but never been hit by one. When people ask, "Aren't you afraid to be out alone?" The answer to me is clear: I would face danger and find happiness instead of staying home and being unhappy.

When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? Do they help with our reading and understanding?

Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers. Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines, and newspapers. Writers use graphics to get the readers' attention and give them some particular(特别的) information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. And graphics put the information in a particular order so that it's easy to understand when we take a quick look.

It is not always true that a picture is worth a thousand words. But many things are easier to be showed than to be told and they may also be easier to be understood. Graphics are just the right things that give a great deal of information but it doesn't take much time to read and understand.

The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. Sometimes, numbers and percentages (百分比) are also given to go with the words to explain things.Now look at the graphic. It is how a researcher used a graphic to show the number of hours spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can you understand it?

Brittany Amano wants to make sure every child in the US has enough to eat.

Brittany Amano, now 18, knew how it felt to go hungry. Her mother tried to find a1 in Honolulu, Hawaii to support the family. Her grandmother helped out as much as she could. But the family 2 had to depend on a local food bank to live on, and for that she was 3 .

Our forests can't  (feed) us anymore so we eat farmers' crops. In response, some villagers plant special crops to keep us away  their farms. Also, people are scared of us. One night, a man named Akbar died while trying to protect his crops when he  (meet) me. His family was heartbroken, just like I was. In ten years, 124 elephants and 83 people died.

The heart shape is a common symbol known by people all over the world. It is used as an expression of love and human hearts. But have you ever  （好奇；想知道） why it looks very different from a real heart?

CRISPR is a gene-editing（基因编辑）technology that greatly influences the world. 

Have you heard of CRISPR? It's like a small pair of DNA scissors that scientists use to edit genes——the instructions inside living things. This amazing technology can fix out-of-order genes, fight diseases, and even help create healthier food!

How does CRISPR work?

 CRISPR uses special proteins（蛋白质）called"Cas" to find and edit specific parts of DNA. The most famous one, "Cas9" can be used to cut and replace DNA with the help of RNA. Scientists compare it to a"search-and-replace" tool for genes. 

A UK company used CRISPR to make pigs grow stronger and avoid diseases. In the future, CRISPR-edited fruits and vegetables might be tastier! Scientists in the US edited trees' genes to use less water and energy when making paper—great for the environment! CRISPR is already being used to treat disease, and it might soon help cure cancer and other illnesses. How exciting'

Can plants grow on the moon? Here's the good news. Scientists at the University of Florida have grown plants in soil from the moon. 

The moon soil was collected by NASA's astronauts with great effort over 50years ago. The soil is so valuable that it took the scientists 11 years to get NASA's agreement to use it. NASA didn't give them much soil——just 12 grams（克）. 6ome of the soil was taken from the top layer（层）of the moon's surface, and the rest came from deeper layers. The moon soil doesn't have many nutrients——things that help plants grow. It has a lot of metal, and is full of tiny pieces of glass. 

For their scientific test, the scientists chose a plant called thale cress, which can grow in very little soil. They got the moon soil wet with water mixed with nutrients. Then they added the seeds. To compare, they also planted the seeds in volcanic ash（火山灰）。

After two days of watering, the scientists saw green plants in every soil layer. "All of the seeds grew. I can't tell you how surprised we were!" said one of the scientists. As time went on, the scientists began to notice differences. The plants grown in the moon soil weren't as healthy as those grown in volcanic ash. They were smaller and grew more slowly, and some leaves turned red. The plants grown in the top layer moon soil did the worst of all. 

Anyway, showing that plants can grow on the moon is a really good starting point. It is the first step toward growing plants for food and O₂ on the moon one day. By studying changes in the DNA of the plants grown in the moon soil, scientists may find new ways to help plants grow better on the moon. It is actually a huge step in achieving humans' long-time dream, of living on the moon.
