The Spring Festival is on lunar January 1st. People put up the Spring Festival couplets. They eat dumplings and have a big meal happily. Children get lucky money on this day. Finally, all the Chinese around the world watch the TV show for the Spring Festival and welcome the Chinese New Year together. 

The Lantern Festival falls on lunar January 15th. People hang red lanterns. They all like red because it is a lucky color. Then family members get together to have a big meal. They also eat tangyuan or yuanxiao on that day. At night, children watch lantern shows and guess the riddles on lanterns. 

The Mid-Autumn Festival is on lunar August 15th. People eat mooncakes and enjoy the moon. At night, they also have a big dinner together. They eat delicious food and have some drinks. Then they talk with each other happily. 

Traditional festivals are important days for Chinese. People all enjoy the family time and have great fun on these days every year. 

Do you feel comfortable when cold winter comes? Many people say they feel uncomfortable in very cold weather. But you should feel lucky because you don't live in Siberia (西伯利亚).

In many places in Siberia, the winter is always very long and it's very, very cold! It starts to snow in November and the snow won't leave until May. The temperature is usually about -25℃, but it's sometimes much colder than that. When it's -35℃, children can't go to school, but grown-ups still go to work! And in some areas, the temperature can drop to -70℃. In spring and summer it is often cloudy, and it often rains a lot, and people don't often see the sun.

You may think there is nothing but ice and snow in Siberia. In fact, many people live there and there are lots of forests. Many tall trees grow there. People living there wear a lot of warm clothes. All the houses have heating, so it's never cold inside. In winter, people close the windows to stop the wind from getting in, and they don't open them again before spring comes.

Spring Festival (春节) is the most important festival in China. It usually comes in January or February. People call it "Chinese New Year" too. 

Before the Spring Festival, people are very busy. They clean their houses to sweep away bad luck. They buy new clothes, food and flowers. Families get together from different places. They make dumplings together. Dumplings are a traditional food for the Spring Festival. 

On New Year's Eve, families have a big dinner. They eat dumplings, fish, chicken and other delicious food. After dinner, they watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. Some people stay up late to welcome the new year. 

On New Year's Day, people wear new clothes. They visit their relatives (亲戚) and friends. They say "Happy New Year!" to each other. Children are very happy because they can get hongbao from their parents and grandparents. 

Spring Festival is a time for family reunion and happiness. Everyone loves the Spring Festival.

A Green and Happy Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the most important traditional festival in China.

Saihanba is a forest park in the north of Hebei. It is about 400 km  Beijing. For hundreds of years, the emperors went there  (hunt). But in the 1800s, things began to change. There were forest fires and wars, and people cut down many trees. Saihanba  (slow) turned into a desert.

 the forest disappeared, there were terrible sandstorms in the Beijing area. In the early 1960s, a group of scientists travelled to Saihanba to find a solution. They found  old tree in the middle of the desert. "Maybe we can still plant trees here," they thought. In 1962, the  (one) tree planters arrived in Saihanba. The cold and dry weather made their work very difficult, and strong  (wind) blew away many young trees. In winter, it got as cold as-40℃.

Three generations of forest workers continued the hard work. Thanks to  (they), Saihanba is green again. Today, it is the world's biggest man-made forest. There  (be) hundreds of millions of trees there. The forest  (help) provide the capital with clean water, and we have fewer sandstorms in the Beijing area now.

Second, change your living habits (习惯). People cut down millions of trees each year to keep the paper industry (造纸工业) going, so using fewer paper products in your daily life can help save trees. . If you must use paper products, always buy the recycled ones. It may seem strange to most people, but you should know that people are cutting down rainforest trees so that people can have land to keep more cattle (牛). 

Trees are one of the oldest living things on our Earth. It takes a very long time for trees to grow. . So let's work together to protect trees.

In spring, the mountains are like silver (银白色的) rivers under the sun. They turn green in summer with growing rice. During autumn, these mountains are gold, while in winter the mountains are full of snow. These are the colours of the Longji Rice Terraces (梯田).

The Zhuang and Yao people built the Longji Rice Terraces hundreds of years ago. But why did these people work so hard to make these terraces? Firstly, there were few big, flat (平坦的) pieces of land for farming. Building terraces allows them to grow more rice. Secondly, the flat terraces can catch the rainwater on rainy days. This helps stop the soil from being washed away.

The design (设计) of the terraces is really clever. People connect these terraces with many waterways. During the rainy season, rainwater moves along these waterways from the top of the mountains down to every terrace. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapor (水蒸气). This creates clouds and then brings rain back to the terraces. These terraces also give a perfect home for birds and fish.

Now these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. People today still use the old ways to keep the terraces in good condition. Today, many visitors come to see the Longji Rice Terraces. This great wonder shows how people work together with nature.

Protecting Our Amazing Home

The Earth is the only planet we know that can support life. It gives us clean air, fresh water, rich soil and all the resources we need to live. However, human activities are putting our planet in great danger.

Climate change is one of the biggest problems. The Earth's temperature is rising because of too much carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the air. This comes from burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas) for cars, factories and electricity. Rising temperatures cause glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, and more extreme weather, such as heavy rains, droughts and heatwaves.

Pollution is another serious problem. Plastic waste is filling our oceans, killing sea animals and polluting our food chain. Air pollution from cars and factories makes people sick, especially children and the elderly. Water pollution from chemicals and waste makes rivers and lakes unsafe to drink from.

Deforestation is also a big threat. People cut down millions of trees every year to make space for farms, buildings and roads. Trees absorb CO₂ and produce oxygen, so losing them makes climate change worse. It also destroys the homes of millions of animals, pushing many species to the edge of extinction.

The good news is that everyone can help protect the Earth. We can reduce our use of plastic, save water and electricity, walk or bike instead of driving, and plant more trees. Small actions from every person can add up to big changes. Let's work together to take care of our amazing home, so that future generations can also enjoy a healthy and beautiful planet.

Mangroves (红树林) are very special forests. They grow along the coastlines (海岸线). They look like tall green walls rising from the sea. Although they might seem like just trees, they do many important jobs for nature. 

First, mangroves play a very important role. They protect coasts from strong winds and big floods, keeping homes and beaches safe. Their roots (根) are like little cities for small animals. Small fish swim around them and birds build their homes there. What's more, these trees are great cleaners. They take out the bad things in the seawater, making the sea cleaner and healthier. In a word, mangroves are not only beautiful but also very useful. We should protect them well. 

But now, mangrove forests are in great danger. People cut them down to build houses or start farms. Human activities create lots of rubbish and wastewater. This is also harmful to them. Many mangrove forests are getting smaller and many small animals in the sea are losing their homes. It's time for us to take action. 

The good news is that more and more people are waking up to their importance. Volunteers (志愿者) plant new mangrove trees, and scientists study how to protect them better. We can help, too. For example, we should stop putting rubbish into the sea and take part in activities to protect mangroves. After all, saving mangroves means keeping nature healthy and it's good for all living things.

Dolphins (海豚) are very smart animals. They live in groups and help each other. From the day they are born, dolphins 1 different sounds like clicks (咔嗒声) and whistles (口哨声). Scientists find that each dolphin has its own special sound—just like a name!

How to go to space

On 30th October, 2024 Shenzhou XIX is sent into space. That is the nineteenth manned spaceship since Yang Liwei reached for the stars in 2003 on Shenzhou V. Have you ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut? 

To be an astronaut, you need to be healthy. Good eyesight, a strong heart and lungs (心肺) are important. You'd better not have other small problems. For example, you can't have scars (伤疤). They may split in space.   

Become stronger with hard training.          

In China, you must be a great pilot before being an astronaut. You must fly more than 600 hours without accidents.  You will wear a 200-kilogram suit and do tasks underwater for 6 or 7 hours without eating or going to the toilet. 

Learn science.

Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts take 60 lessons to get ready for a mission, including Maths, English, spaceship design, physics and many more.

Even if you are great enough to become a backup (备用的) astronaut, . During the Shenzhou XIII mission, only three astronauts can go into space. But there are another 13 backup astronauts. They can't go. They are the unsung heroes of the space programme.
