China has once again set a world record by opening the new Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge(花江峡谷大桥) in Guizhou. It is 625 meters high above the Beipan River, making it the tallest bridge in the world.

Guizhou is famous for its special landscape: high mountains, deep and exciting valleys(山谷)as well as many different rocks. Many people fall in love with its wonderful natural beauty after travelling in Guizhou. Every year, many visitors come to Guizhou to enjoy the striking and amazing scenery. But travelling around the area is difficult. The Huajiang Grand Canyon is so deep and long that people call it the"Earth's Crack".

On September 28, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was opened to traffic. The bridge is 2.89kilometers long in total, and its central part is about 1.42 kilometers. It is part of the S57 highway. In the past, driving across the mountains took at least 70 minutes. Now the same trip takes just over one minute.

But the bridge's builders are actually hoping to slow some of that traffic down. They want to turn the bridge into a place for tourists to go. As one of the workers on the bridge says,"The view from the bridge is fantastic." There is a special glass walkway which allows visitors to look down at the river deep in the valley below.

Great changes have taken place in Guizhou's transportation. In the 1980s, there were fewer than3,000 bridges. Now Guizhou has more than 32,000 bridges, and nearly half of the world's 100 tallest bridges are in Guizhou.

One recent day at noon, I opened my eyes and found myself standing outside my apartment with confusion. Everything looked familiar, but something seemed wrong: The keyhole in the door was gone. I expected my wife or daughters to open the door.

"Coming!" a voice replied. It sounded like mine, but much older. The door was open. Here was a robot. I looked around the apartment carefully.

"Come in, please!" the robot said,"My human, Mr. Wu, asked me to teleport(远距离传送) you here."

"Teleport?" I was even more confused."Where am I? Isn't this my apartment?"

"It is, but it's March 2054. You' re in the future."

Soon, an old man walked out. He must be me at 63. He looked healthy and introduced his robot,Wu BOT. I was really amazed to know that this robot once showed kung fu in 2026. Just then, a drone(无人机) came and sent a birthday gift for my wife, who was travelling at Mount Lu.

At that time, I felt lonely, although I was told that I could talk to Wu BOT. I thought it was not the same. How sad I was!

Suddenly, the alarm clock was ringing. In a minute, I woke up from a dream on a park bench.Birds were singing, children were laughing, and elderly couples were taking a slow walk after lunch.There were no robots or drones. It felt good to be back in the human age.

My Favourite Colour

Different people have different favourite colours.

A good speech helps you share your ideas clearly. However, many people don't know how to make a good one. Here is some useful  .

First, start with a strong beginning. A good speech should  your listeners' attention at once. You can tell a short story or show a picture. This often  the listeners interested and ready to listen.

Second, state（陈述）your goal clearly. It lets your listeners know  what to expect. You can use easy words instead of  ones to state your goal. This helps you tell the listeners what you want to say and  it matters.

Third, give your speech in a clear  . It helps listeners follow your thoughts without getting lost. To do this, use words  "first", "next" and"finally". When your ideas connect well, listeners will understand and remember  better.

Finally, pay attention to your body language and speaking style. They are just as important as your words. Stand straight, keep your shoulders  and speak at a proper speed. Look at your listeners and avoid moving around too much. Being calm and confident gets the listeners to trust your words.

By practising more, you will surely become a better speaker.

Climate change is often talked about, yet the change of seasons—warmer winters and hotter summers—may not be noticed because it happens very slowly. Studies show people don't notice slow changes easily. The story of Princeton is a good example.

In the past. Lake Carnegie froze every winter. People in Princeton could skate on the thick ice through winter. However, around the 1970s, winters in Princeton started to become warmer. Now, the lake seldom freezes, so people cannot skate on it every winter. But most people there didn't connect this with climate change.

The real-life example helped researchers look for a better way to get people to notice slow changes brought by climate change. In their research, they showed volunteers two different graphs （图表）—a temperature graph and a lake-freezing graph. The temperature graph showed a fictional（虚构的）town's rising winter temperatures over the years. The lake-freezing graph showed whether the town's lake froze each year. Both graphs showed the same climate trend（趋势）, but they made the volunteers feel differently. When the volunteers saw the lake-freezing graph, they felt climate change was more serious, because they could directly see the lake didn't freeze every year like before. This helped them see the influence of climate change clearly. But when the volunteers saw the temperature graph, they didn't feel the same, because the graph failed to help them connect climate change with daily life.

With the help of what the research has found, we can actively notice slow changes in our daily life brought by climate change. At the same time, we can also help the people around us notice them.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of floor Technology (MIT) have estimated（估计）that the world may need about I billion new homes by 

2050. According to a researcher from MIT, if people use wood to make so many 3UUS homes, more than three times the size of the Amazon rainforest Diagram（示意图） may be cut. The MIT researchers tried to find other materials to take the place of wood to make house parts. And they found recycled plastic could play a role.

The MIT team discovered that recycled plastic mixed with bits of glass could be used as a new material to make trusses（桁架）—supports put under floors to make sure that the floors can carry the weight of everything on them.

The MIT team wanted to know how much weight the trusses could carry. In a test, they 3D printed four trusses with the new material. Each truss weighed only about 6 kg—lighter than a comparable wooden truss. The team put the four trusses under a wooden floor model and slowly added heavy weights on the floor. Through the test, the team found the four trusses could sustain objects weighing more than 1,800 kg—about the weight of a car. This showed trusses made from the new material were strong enough to be used in house building in America.

The finding may benefit house building a lot. It will be much easier to send house parts made from this new material to different places. What's more, the researchers say it is possible to bring down the cost of making house parts. The researchers hope that one day they can 3D print more house parts with the new material, so that more used plastic could be turned into something useful.

After living away from the coast for more than 25 years, I came back to my hometown in Scotland. One of the things I enjoy most here is the sound of scagulls（海鸥）。

I grew up in a village by the sca. Only 26 people lived here, but scagulls were everywhere. Their calls were around us all the time. During my childhood, I often heard the seagulls call down the chimney（烟囱）. I imagined they were using the chimney as a phone to send messages to us.

My family even had a"pet" seagull. We named him Willy. The top of the wall of our garden was his favourite place. From there, he had a good view of our dining room. As soon as we sat down for a meal, he usually landed by the window and waited patiently for food. Sometimes, when Willy was very hungry, he would knock at the window to ask for food. Then, we would throw him bits of bread through the window. And he would skillfully catch the bread in mid-air.

Once, when my mum was feeding Willy with a spoon, he took the spoon with food and swallowed（吞下）it whole. We were worried that he would get hurt. To our surprise, when he appeared for his meal the next day, he looked all right. And later we found the spoon in the garden! He was probably the only seagull in Scotland to return cutlery（餐具）。

I have deep love for seagulls. When I wake up to their calls or see them flying in the sky,a feeling of happiness washes over me. I know I'm home.
