Final exams are just around the corner. Liu Haoxuan, 14, who studies at Beijing Dayu School, is quite busy. However, he still had to find time to practise his spoken English. That's because he had to take a new English listening and speaking test. 

Liu is not alone. This is a new test for all students who are taking senior high school entrance exams (中考) in Beijing. Junior students have to take an English listening and speaking test that counts for 40 points on their full English exam. The test is taken on a computer. They can take the test twice – once in December and again in March – to try to get the highest score possible. The test was just introduced last year. 

During the 30-minute test, students have to fill in blanks, answer questions and retell stories after listening to different materials. "It pushes us to speak. ____ it was hard at the beginning, it's a good thing, " Liu said. He got a low score when he first took it last semester (学期). But he kept working hard in order to improve his pronunciation and other skills. He practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. Later, he got a score of 39 on the test. 

Liu Tianyou, 14, comes from Beijing Yuying Middle School. He has his own way to prepare for the spoken English test. He uses apps to take practice tests every day. "The apps will score your performance so that you can improve accordingly, " he said. "Also, the practice tests help me learn to take notes properly. They help me grasp topic sentences and connection words. "

Last year, I did not like my English class. The teacher spoke so  (quick) that I did not understand her. I felt it was  (hard) to learn than any other subject.

What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don't know what it means? . 

Say it

First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. . Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don't know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read, you have the word!

Use context（上下文）

If this doesn't work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. , "rain" and "in the doorway" might give you helpful information. 

If the context doesn't help, look at the parts of the word. If you don't know the meaning of "miner", try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get valuable things like coal（煤）. Usually, "-er" at the end of a word means "a person who does something". So a miner might be someone who works in a mine. 

Look it up

If the three steps above don't work, you can look it up.  —either a book or online. 

Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don't know. 

Reading your notebook at a table is not a good way to study English because you cannot actively use the information in it. Here are some ways. They can help you learn better. 

1) Keep a diary every day. If you write, you will see your grammar clearly in front of you, express your ideas, and use a non-oral method to communicate in English. 

2) Read a book. By reading a story, you create a picture in your mind. That will make people think in English. Find a book that is not too difficult—to start with a children's storybook with pictures! Do not stop every time you find a new word. Guess what the word probably means, continue reading, and look up the word in your dictionary at the end of the story. 

3) Watch TV and movies, and listen to the radio. Your listening ability will improve day by day and it's fun!

4) Think positively. People who say "I can't speak English well" are correct. People who say "Every day in every way, my English is getting better and better" are also correct. What you think is what you get. Practice saying the second sentence every day, and you will see greater improvement（提高）in your English and in your confidence.

Paca's life changed the day she watched TV for the first time. It was a rock concert and Paca was fascinated (着迷的) not by the music, but by the singers' long hair. 

"Oh! What long and pretty hair! I want something like that, something that shows I'm special. " But Paca was only a frog. She didn't even know that frogs don't have hair. She thought that her hair would grow if she gave concerts. Her croak (呱呱叫声) didn't work with rock music, opera or pop, but she carried on performing everywhere she went. She went to towns and cities, to the sea and mountains, into streets and gardens. . . until one day she gave a concert in a hairdresser's. 

While Paca was singing, without anyone knowing that there was a frog there, the hairdresser was cutting a customer's hair. A large piece of hair fell onto Paca's head, and, seeing herself with so much hair, she thought that her dream was finally coming true. 

In her excitement, she sang so loudly that she woke up Fredo, the hairdresser's cat. Seeing the pile of moving hair, the cat caught it, mistaking it for a mouse. 

Because Fredo didn't like the cold touch and slippery (光滑的) feel of Paca's skin, he freed her as soon as possible. So, in that way Paca learned that being a frog also had its good side. 

From that moment on, Paca studied all the advantages of being a frog and the best way to use them. Paca started a school for frogs, where she produced the most talented and happiest frogs.
