Kristen Tapping, a student from London South Bank University, has invented a bike wheel that can help clean pollution in the air. It's called Rolloe.

The wheel uses fins (尾翼) to pull in air as it turns. It then uses filters (过滤器) to take in polluted air and give off clean air back into the environment. The wheel can filter more air if it goes faster, although it still works at low speeds (速度).

Tapping said users would need to change the filter every week or after about 250 kilometers, to make sure the wheel continues to work well. The wheel fits in the front of a standard (标准的) bike and weighs about one kilogram.

Tapping said she was encouraged to create the wheel when she was biking around London. "In traffic, you always notice the pollution, the heat, the gases and the smell," she said. She predicts that if 10 percent of the riders in London had a Rolloe on their bike, they could filter about 266,865 m³ of air a day, although this has yet to be tested.

A recent report shows that London's health costs because of air pollution are the highest among all the European cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also said that outdoor air pollution causes about 4.2 million deaths around the world each year.

Tapping wants to use the wheel on shared bike projects at first, with the aim of making the wheels available for all bikes to use. She says she would also like to create a wheel that would fit in the back of a bike, as well as making them available in different sizes.

It works as a pun (双关语) . As "upside down" in Chinese sounds like "arrive", so its meaning is "Fortune arrives (at your home) "—a New Year greeting to the household.

So where don't people hang the Chinese character fu upside down? On the front door!

The front door is the entrance to the household. It's where good fortune can be invited into the house. In Chinese culture, it's a place that needs to be respected. An upside-down posting of fu on the front door is unnecessary and impolite.

In the past, we commonly saw the word fu put upside down on the shelves, on the bins and on some big urns (壶, 缸) that may be full of anything from food to water. Do you know thecausation? That's because we use the rice vat (桶, 盆) , the water vat and trash bins to pour things out. In order not to pour the fortune out, people hang the Chinese character fu upside down. And the shelves are used to store things, so the upside-down fu shows fortune can come, too.

Now it's not necessary for us to know about the true meaning of hanging the Chinese character fu upside down clearly. We just regard it as one of the most important parts of our traditional culture.

It's OK to ask your friends or someone you know well direct questions. But they can seem abrupt (唐突的) and impolite at times, especially when you are asking a stranger. For example, if you come up to someone and ask "What time is it?" or "Can you move?", he/she may refuse to help you. It is certainly correct to ask questions in this way, but it's very common to make these kinds of questions more polite by adding "Excuse me" or "Pardon me" to begin your questions. "Excuse me, when does the bus leave?" or "Pardon me, may I sit here?" sounds more polite.

It's also possible to use "can" in more informal (非正式的) situations. In the past, "can" was not used when asking for something, but only to refer to abilities. In the United Kingdom, Cambridge University publishes (出版) English teaching materials with the phrase "Can you lend me", "Can I have", etc. In the United States, this form is often considered less formal, especially in written English, and "May I have" is preferred. Questions with "can" are made more polite by using "could": "Pardon me, could you help me?"

"Would" can also be used to make questions more polite. "Would you let me borrow your pencil?" is also polite.

Another way of making direct questions more polite is to add "please" at the end of the questions. We can say, "Could you help me, please?" "Please" is usually placed at the end of a request in informal speech, though it can also appear at the beginning in more formal or particularly polite contexts.

However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong, was practicing the lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs (锣) for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture brought back my strong memories of paper cutting.

I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. The Chongyang Festival is a special day elderly people in China. The festival is on the (nine) day of September of the lunar calendar. As the Chinese word for "nine" (have) the same sound as the word for "long", people take the festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people.

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, (family) get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much (long). They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called zhuyu (celebrate) it. Both chrysanthemums zhuyu are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure diseases (治愈疾病).

Because of his excellent performance, Hao Yongquan was chosen as Gansu's most beautiful forest ranger (护林员)in December, 2023.

Hao has been a forest ranger since he stopped serving in the army in 1987. He and his workmates at Guanyin Forest Farm are called the "Forest's Eyes" and "Green Guardians".

"Daily work usually starts with patrolling(巡逻). Every morning, we carry necessary equipment after having breakfast and then set off to forests with dry food and water bottles, patrolling until it gets dark," Hao said.

Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always go out early and return at sunset during the whole year, and it's their duty to protect green mountains and clear waters.

A forest ranger often has to walk more than 12 kilometers a day, and a pair of shoes wears out in two to three months, according to Hao.

"Because of poor road conditions, if rangers go to the farthest villages for patrols, they have to walk 30 to 40 kilometers on mountain roads, climb four mountains, and cross more than 10 rivers, " Hao said."And each patrol takes three to four days."

When Hao returns from his patrol every day, he writes down the-results in the patrol diary, recording his love for mountains and forests.

"The environment is improving day, by day, and. that makes me feel my work is useful"he said.

Sunflowers are beautiful and useful plants that people all over the world enjoy. They can grow very tall, sometimes over three meters. A young sunflower hasamazing ability—its flower face follows, the sun across the skyeast to west each day.

This movement is called heliotropism (向日性). It helps the young plant get as much sunlight as possible. when the flower becomes heavy with seeds(种子),it stops moving and stays facing east forever.

Because of this system, both of her children are glad to help with housework. Her Facebook post has got over 15,0oo likes and has been shared over 27,0o0 times. Many parents have begun to imitate her. They use the same way to discipline (管教) their children.

In fact, doing housework plays an important role in children's development (发展).
