The power of teamwork

Fan Kuan was a famous painter of the Song dynasty. He made many good (painting). Young artists wanted Fan to teach them. "You must learn from a  (great) teacher than me. He lives all around you.  (he) name is Nature, " Fan said. 

Fan Kuan believed that if you wanted to understand nature, you had to touch it, smell it, and listen to it. He lived in the mountains and  (watch) the seasons change. 

One morning, Fan met  old farmer on a mountain path. The farmer was scared at first,  he relaxed after knowing Fan was not a danger. Then, Fan Kuan (invite) by the farmer to his home for a meal In return, he painted a picture for the farmer. Everything  the painting looked so real that the farmer was shocked. 

As Fan was leaving, the farmer asked  he lived. "Mountains or forests, east or west, all can be my home, "Fan answered (quiet). The farmer thought Fan was strange. Fan just smiled and said, "I have lived in nature for many years. "

I can still remember the day Mr. Pearson asked me to wait after class for a" quick talk". He was my 1 . I wanted to give up my schoolwork. I didn't really see the point in trying. 

So that afternoon, Mr. Pearson sat down next to me. He asked me 2 I wanted to be in the future. I could answer that question easily 3 I was always thinking about it.

Gongbu was one of the three members that reached the top of Qomolangma in 1960. We did an interview with him about the famous climb.

Reporter: You finished such a climb in 1960. 

Gong Bu: Climbing the Second Step. It was a 30-metre-high wall of rock near the top. No one had ever climbed it before. The air was thin and the wind was strong. 

Reporter: What is the most unforgettable about the Second Step?

Gong Bu: Well, it is Liu Lianman. Then he said, "I' ll be the ladder. " He let us stand on his shoulders to move up. 

Reporter: What happened then?

Gong Bu: Liu was too tired to keep going. He chose to stay behind. We three got to the top and planted our national flag.

Gong Bu: Yes, actually all of us. Qu Yinhua took off his heavy shoes to stand on Liu' s shoulders.  He even lost all his toes. 

Reporter: What made your team finish the hard task finally?

Gong Bu: Teamwork matters so much. Without it, we could never have made it.

Do trees have memories? This may seem strange, but trees can actually tell us things about the past. When a tree is cut down, you can see rings（树轮）inside. These are the memories of trees. They can tell lots of secrets from the forest. 

Every year the tree grows, there is a new ring. Scientists can count the rings to tell the age of the tree. They study tree rings to learn about the climate and the environment. Tree rings are a record of the climate. Some rings are quite wide. This is a good sign because it means the tree grew well and was healthy. This happens when the tree gets enough sun and rain. When it doesn't rain enough, the tree grows less, and the rings are narrow. Thanks to this, scientists can look at how the rings change to learn about climate change in one place. 

Scientists also look at tree rings to study natural disasters. For example, sometimes there is a black area on a tree ring. This usually means there was a forest fire. If scientists count the rings from the black area, they can answer difficult questions, such as"When did the fire happen?"and"How common are forest fires?"

Tree rings can also help us understand human history. For example, using tree rings, scientists can tell the age of old buildings. Nowadays, they can even look at the chemistry of each tree ring to know exactly when the tree was cut down. With this new method, a team of scientists discovered that a Viking village in Canada was built in the year 1021. 

It's amazing that trees can tell us so much, even though they cannot talk!

Annie:(to herself)I'll never get this right. Everyone else is playing games, but I'm stuck here serving. . . 

Coach Ken is always picking on me. I'm so tired of being the worst player on the team.

Annie: You're right. I can't give up every time something is hard. I'll never learn anything that way. (Annie calms down and turns back to the court. Seeing Annie cheer up, her teammates smile and stand up. )

Teammates: We're glad you stayed! We'll practise with you. You're part of the team!(Annie smiles. She picks up the volleyball and starts practising again. Then she notices a small note on the chair. It says: Don't be afraid of growing slowly. Be afraid of standing still. )

Plogging is an activity that connects jogging with picking up rubbish. I often take part in this voluntary activity. 

This year, Cai Gao, a Chinese picture book illustrator(插画师), made history. She (win) the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration in April.  award is called the"Nobel Prize for Children's Literature". Cai Gao was born in 1946 in Changsha. She (dream) of creating warm picture books since she was a little girl. She drew inspiration from many of her childhood (memory) of folk songs and stories. She worked hard (pass) down Chinese folk culture. She created wonderful works for people, and  return, people loved her paintings. Known as"the grandmother of picture books"in China, she was both surprised and (joy). 

Now Cai Gao is in her (eighty). She feels a strong sense of (achieve) after winning the award.  the road is full of difficulties, she is still moving on. Her success is so great that it encourages more young artists. 

The film, Love Letters to Grandma, also called Dear You, has become very popular recently. With a high (得分) of 9. 1 from over 200, 000 netizens, it has done well at the box office. The film is based on real stories and moves lots of people. It (表达) family love and great kindness behind the old Qiaopi(侨批) stories from Chaoshan. 

The story is about Grandma Ye Shou. Her husband, Zheng Musheng, went to work in Thailand and remained overseas. She lived a (孤独的) life and kept waiting for him. (幸运地), Shou got help from a kind woman named Xie Nanzhi. She didn't tell Shou about Zheng Musheng's (死亡). In the name of Zheng Musheng, she tried to (提供) Qiaopi, special letters with money for the family. She (隐藏) the truth just to protect the family. 

The film is not only about Qiaopi, but also about (深深的) love and kindness. It makes (每个人) think about their own families. It inspires us to be kind and to treasure the people around us. The story is simple, but it touches heart. 

There is a well-known Chinese story called fixing Wall after Losing Sheep. Long long ago, a man kept sheep. One day, he found a hole (洞) in the wall, but he was so  that he did nothing. Later, wolves got in and  his sheep. Soon the hole grew bigger and more sheep were attacked. He felt sorry and decided to fix the hole. He even kept on working while the heavy rain  against the wall. He fixed it again and again  it was strong enough. 

In the end, no more sheep were lost. The story  tells us we should fix mistakes in time. As long as we do something, we can avoid much . 

Jessie and her brother Ed get home from school at 4:15 p. m. Their mother Lynn gets home at 4:30 p. m. One day, Jessie and Ed got home a little early because they took their friends' father's car 1 walking. 

"Let's give Mum a 2 , "said Ed. "Why don't we bath the 3 ?"

"Oh, yes! Mum hates bathing Fred. She'll be very 4 if we do that, "said Jessie.

Water—the best drink

Healthy Life magazine interviewed Dr Danielle McBride about something that's very important for everyone—water. 

Healthy Life: How important is water?

Dr McBride: Very important. For adults, water is about 55% to 60% of their body weight.  Water is in our blood, our bones and all the other parts of our body. It keeps our bodies moving and working well. 

Healthy Life: 

Dr McBride: We need to take in about 2 litres（升）of water a day. About 20% of this comes from the food we eat. For example, vegetables and fruit are mostly（主要）water. 

Healthy Life: What about drinks like tea, juice and coffee?

Dr McBride: They are fine, but it's better to drink plain water（白开水）. We need about seven or eight glasses a day. 

Healthy Life: What happens if we don't drink enough?

Dr McBride:  It may be hard to think clearly. When they lose more than that, things start to become serious.

A loud siren(警报器) sounds. It's the tsunami warning siren. In every classroom of the high school, students put down their pens and books, stand up and go outside. Then all the students and teachers make their way out of the school grounds and along a road that goes up a hill. Local people join them. When they reach a special meeting point, they stop. The teachers count their students and congratulate them on getting here quickly and safely. 

But is a tsunami coming to destroy villages, boats and plants along the coast? No. This is a practice. This is Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean, and today is Tsunami Awareness(意识) Day. 

Every year on 5 November, Tonga holds Tsunami Awareness Day to teach people about the danger of tsunamis and how to keep safe. The key messages are to know the warnings and to get to high ground—away from low ground along the coast. Another message is to help people who can't move as quickly as others, like the elderly and people with disabilities(残疾), so they make it to high ground. 

"We all remember the tsunami of 2022, " says student Leila Mafi. "It happened after a big volcano erupted(火山爆发) under the ocean nearby. Big waves caused a lot of damage(毁坏). Thankfully, we had early warning of the tsunami, and most people left the low ground. Four lives were lost, but it could have been worse. "

"Tonga is a nation of 170 islands, and many of us live beside the ocean, " says teacher Ben Pulu. "We now have the technology to check movements(移动) under the ocean and warn us that a tsunami is on the way. But we all need to know what to do when that warning comes. Tsunami Awareness Day is a great way to make sure everyone is ready. "

Every year, hundreds of millions of trees die from lightning strikes（击打）around the world, especially in rainforests. And as the climate changes, that number is rising. However, scientists in Panama have discovered a special tree—the tonka bean tree（香豆树）. The tree can survive lightning strikes!

According to a new study written by Evan Gora and his team, the tonka bean tree has a surprising ability. They have compared 9 tonka bean trees with 84 other kinds of trees since 

2021. It showed that all 9 tonka bean trees survived lightning strikes, while over half of the other kinds of trees died in less than 2 years after being hit by lightning. 

What's more, the tree actually benefits from lightning strikes. Each lightning strike on a tonka bean tree kills almost 80% of its parasitic vines(寄生藤蔓) and about 9 nearby trees, giving it more space to grow. As Gora explained, "It's better for a tonka bean tree to be hit by lightning than not. "

Tonka bean trees grow about 4 meters taller than nearby trees, helping them get more sunlight. The height difference also makes it more possible for them to attract lightning strikes. "Trees die more easily when living next to a tonka bean tree than living next to any other big old trees in that forest, " said Gora. 

Now, scientists are trying to find out how this tree resists(抵抗) lightning strikes. They hope this tree's secrets could help protect forests from lightning strikes. 

Book Report on A Wrinkle in Time

I have chosen to write my book report on A Wrinkle in Time, a science-fiction novel by Madeleine L'Engle. 

It tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl called Meg Murry who travels through space with her little brother Charles to find their father. He is a scientist and is missing. 

Meg and Charles meet a mysterious old woman called Mrs Whatsit. She says that she knows where their father is—he is trapped（被困）as a prisoner（囚犯）on a far-away planet Camazotz and controlled by IT. She says she can help them travel through space to rescue him. Mrs Whatsit has two strange friends, Mrs Who and Mrs Which, and the three women travel with the children. 

On Camazotz, Mr Murry is a powerful but evil（邪恶的）prisoner of IT, who rules the planet. The children and their friends are able to free Mr Murry, but then IT catches Charles. With the help of Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, and Mrs Which, Meg is finally able to free Charles. 

A Wrinkle in Time is an exciting story of goodness fighting against evil. I like the characters in the book. At first Meg is not confident, but she learns that her love for her family makes her strong. Charles is very smart, and brave too. Mrs Whatsit and her two friends are funny and wise. 

The book has some interesting scientific ideas in it, too. I enjoy reading about how they are able to quickly travel long distances（距离）through space. I recommend A Wrinkle in Time to anyone who likes science fiction stories.
