Saving the Earth

Antarctica (南极洲) is known for being a large land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. However, the land is slowly starting to turn warm. According to The Guardian, the Antarctic has shown a new high temperature for the first time on record, raising fears of climate change in the world's coldest place. 

On Feb. 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20. 75 ℃ on the icy land of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the past record of 19. 8 ℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982. 

This record-breaking reading (数据) was taken at a watch station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was recorded during a 20-year-long research project. The purpose of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永冻土) within the area. Permafrost is the earth that stays icy for at least two years. 

Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer pointed out that "We can't use this to predict climate changes in the future. It's simply a sign that something different is happening in that area. "

But in fact, the last high temperature reading was around 19 ℃. These higher temperatures can cause ice in Antarctic area to melt (融化). This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can put the coast areas in danger. It's believed to be behind an alarming drop of more than 50 percent in the number of penguins, which are dependent on sea ice. 

Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, "The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for. " We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to live in. 

The Earth Needs a Helping Hand

The Earth is getting warmer because of the activities of people. We cut down and burn  and send gases into the air with our cars and factories. Can we do anything about it? Sure. We may not be leaders or scientists but we can play our part in  the planet. Here are two ideas. 

Ride Bikes to School

Do you  to school by bus or by bike? If you bike, you are doing  good for the Earth. Buses, cars, trains and planes produce a lot of carbon dioxide. If you live near to your school, why not bike there on warm spring mornings? Or you can  walk to school to save energy. 

Wash in the Green Way

Do you help your mom and dad wash clothes? Then wash them  an energy-saving way. A recent study by Cambridge University found that 60 percent of the energy used on a piece of clothing is  in washing and drying it. Over a lifetime, a T-shirt can send up to 4 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the air. 

 you wash your own clothes, wash them in cold or warm water to save energy, but not hot water. When they're clean, dry  clothes the natural way, by hanging them with a line rather than  them in a dryer. In all, you can cut the carbon dioxide used in washing by 90 percent. 

John Muir was a protector（保护者）of nature. He set an example that each of us can follow to protect the natural areas around us. 

The first way we can follow Muir's example is to discover our local natural areas.  He once walked one thousand miles from Indiana to Florida. 

 Muir loved to explore（探索）the outdoors. He learned everything he could about rock plants and animals. From his exploring, he came to realize that the wilderness, places where people do not live or build, is an important gift. Muir made a decision that his life's goal was to protect this gift. 

Muir's greatest example for us is his work to protect nature. He shared its beauty by writing books.  In winter, he enjoyed its "pearl gray belt of snow（珠灰色雪带）". However, he also saw sheep eating Yosemite's plants and people cutting down its trees for wood. Muir gave talks and wrote books about these dangers. President Theodore Rooevelt was so impressed（给……留下深刻印象）after hearing that Muir visited Yosemite that he signed a law making Yosemite a national park in 1890. 

We can find our own pieces of nature to explore, learn about and protect. We can write to our local newspapers about nature's beauty.  We can all follow John Muir's footsteps. 

Ben and his classmates are watching a DVD about the environment. This is the introduction to them. 

A long time ago, most towns and villages were very small. The number of people who lived in every country was much smaller than it is today, too. There was no heavy industry, but only agriculture, arts and crafts (手艺). And none of these things damaged our environment. People did not use chemicals. There were no motor vehicles. There were no factories. There was, therefore, very little pollution. 

Sadly, our environment is much dirtier than it was in the past. This is a problem because the best way for us to be healthy is to live in a clean environment. 

The air and the water are much dirtier than they used to be. The air is full of pollutants (污染物) of various kinds-smoke from cars, factories and things like insect sprays (喷雾). The water is polluted by chemicals from factories and fuel from ships. These mean that we are gradually destroying one of our major food sources-the oceans of the world. 

In the DVD, we will try to find the ways to make our environment cleaner and the ways to stop future pollution. We hope you will learn how to make the world a cleaner and healthier place. 

Teens take a stand

COP 26 was held in Glasgow, Scotland. It's the United Nations' climate change conference (会议) on dealing with global warming. 

Many world leaders took part in the event. But there were also lots of teenagers from different countries there to make their voices heard. At 15, my friend Chelsea Liang from Edinburgh was one of the young participants at COP 26. I was able to ask her some questions about her experience there. 

Liang participated as a junior representative (代表) of C Team, a non-governmental organization, which organized all the events at the China Cooperate Pavilion (馆). "I helped set up the stadium, hosted meetings, engaged in youth events, and joined the audience in the meetings. I met many young people who really care about the environmental problem, " said Liang. 

"The major topic from teen participants is that governments act to limit global warming to 1. 5℃, " she said. "Some of them met in Glasgow to call for a better future. "

The well-known British naturalist David Attenborough was the eldest participant of the event. Liang said that the 96-year-old made an inspiring speech. 

"He said, ‘In my lifetime, I've seen a terrible decline (衰退). In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery. That desperate hope is why the world is looking to you and why you are here. ' His words encouraged me to take action, " Liang said. "And I realized that as teenagers we are able to come up with good ideas to make a difference. "

"I have seen that over the last two weeks, companies and people are doing much more than expected. Social awareness of global warming is only increasing. I am optimistic (乐观的) about the future, " said Liang.

For the first time, Coca-Cola company has revealed it used three million tons of plastic packaging in one year. Coca-Cola is selling 500 kinds of drinks, juices and water in the market. And it says it will also work towards making all of its packaging recyclable all over the world. In 2019, the company announced they would recycle used bottles or cans for each one the company sells by 2030. 

The TV program, BBC's Blue Planet 2 about oceans, has made more people pay more attention to the plastic waste. It says the blue whales' living conditions are becoming worse and worse because of plastic waste. It makes people worried. So many companies have agreed on reducing their plastic usage (使用期) to be greener. So far, 150 companies have agreed to reduce their plastic usage in one year. They have signed up to be part of The Ellen's commitment (承诺书) to reduce plastic pollution. In February 2019, Nestle got rid of plastic straws (吸管) and is using paper ones instead. 

People all are looking for ways to save energy and natural resources (资源) to protect our environment. Here's an example of saving water. 

A doctor called Jack Todd, is very interested in cleaning water as well as saving money, so he has tried many ways, and in the end he developed a small and affordable system to clean waste water— the Living Machine. The machine can clean waste water in our home and in our business. 

The machine can clean waste water. First, the waste water goes into a big plastic tank. In the tank, the wastes start to break down. Second, a few days later, the water is brought into a greenhouse full of plants and fish. With the help of sunlight, plants and animals, many chemicals can be removed from the water. That makes the water cleaner. Then the water can be used for washing or bathing. Though it cant be used for drinking or cooking, the water is clean enough to water the flowers, wash the dog and bathe. 

This technology is good for the environment. It can also help to save fresh water and it can help provide the unpolluted water. If we take actions to do something to save energy on the earth, our planet will have a longer life and our life will be better.

First, we tried to save 1 . We never left the lights on when leaving the rooms. We turned off the TV when 2 was watching it. Mum only used 3 water in the washing machines.

Easter (复活节) is a national public holiday in many parts of the world. It isn't on the same date every year because it depends on the moon. Easter is a movable holiday. It is calculated (计算) as the first Sunday after the full moon. If the full moon falls on a Sunday, then Easter will be the following Sunday. The holiday can be any time between March 22 and April 25. In 2020, Easter is on April 12. 

Different countries also celebrate Easter at different time. There are many traditional things to do at Easter. Families usually eat a special meal on Easter Sunday, and children look for chocolate eggs at parties. Groups come to villages and dance. The dancers make a lot of noise, singing, shouting and hitting drums. There are often parades at Easter. If it's warm, women and girls will wear beautiful dresses and hats. 

I'm Mike. I had a great Easter holiday last year. On the first day of the holiday, my family went to Hong Kong. We visited the Ocean Park. It is the most exciting place I have ever been to. We spent the whole day in the park. We also spend one whole day in Hong Kong Disneyland. Shopping was one of the major events for everyone visiting Hong Kong. My mother filled up three suitcases when the holiday ended.
