Hopes, ambitions(抱负), dreams, how many of yours will you achieve? When you look back at your life in the future, will you have good memories of all the things that you did? Or will you regret all the things that you didn't do?

Step 1: 

What would you like to do? Write down all your ambitions. They may be very general, such as "I would like to be fitter", "I want to be famous" or "It would be nice to have more friends". Or they may be more specific, like "I've always wanted to play a musical instrument".

Step 2: 

Now you need to do two things

1. Choose one or two ambitions. If you try to do everything, you won't do anything. 

2. Set a time limit(限定). This is very important, because you will have a goal and you will also know when you have reached it.

So, for example, "I would like to be fitter" in Step 1 now becomes "I will be fit enough to join a half-marathon race by the end of August".

Step 3: 

Now that you've made your choice, what are you actually going to do to achieve your goal? So, in our example, "I will be fit enough to join a half marathon race by the end of August" becomes "I'm going to join a running club" or "I'm going to go jogging three times a week".

Step 4: 

This is when you change your intentions(意图) into specific actions. Prepare to do something at a specific time. If you don't do this, your dreams and plans will just stay as dreams and plans. So now "I'm going to join a running club" becomes "I'm meeting the president of the Cheetahs Running Club on Monday evening at 5:30". 

Don't let your ambitions die. Follow this four-step model and make your dream come true.

Stephen Hawking, who was born in England in 1942, died at the age of 76. He was one of (great) scientists on space and time in the world. Hawking spent his whole life (study) how the universe started and how it ends.

Who gives him the right to shout at someone? Anger built inside me. "What if I shouted at my friends when they asked me for help?" I said. I looked out of the window, trying to catch my breath.

"You know, Stephen, I think you are going to be a psychologist(心理学家), " he said. I remembered the last time I tried to say something, he had fumed, "Don't tell me how to drive! If I want your opinion, I'll ask for it! Think about what you say before you talk."

Usually, he'd be angry at what would doubt his authority(权威), but this time, he accept what I had said. A sense of pride rose up in me. It had been a short drive, but it had been the best car ride of my life.

As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren't.

Some statistics(数据) from the survey done by the European Commission(欧 盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English, 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this, you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That's why many people don't think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In British schools, it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don't students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.

Changing the British attitude(态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try! 

What was school like in ancient times? In Greece, 2, 500 years ago, students used to get up early to go to school. Classes began very early and ended when it was dark. Students didn't rest on the weekends. They had classes seven days a week, so they didn't have much time for anything else. 

In Athens, only the sons of rich people went to school, and they started school around the age of seven. After they learned to read and write, they used to study Greek poems and historical works. Music was very important, and physical training was also important. Teachers used to hit students who didn't pay attention or were lazy. Girls stayed at home with their mothers and learned how to do housework in the home. 

In ancient Rome, boys and girls from rich families received a bilingual(双语的) education. They had to study Greek and Latin. Students usually had classes outside, if the weather was good, or in the teacher's house. Young students sat on the floor. Older students used to sit on benches, higher up. That's how "high school" got its name. 

Education was very important to the ancient Aztecs of Mexico. Boys and girls went to school, but they were kept in different classes. They learned Aztec history, myths, and rituals, but they memorized(记住) everything by their brains because there weren't any textbooks. The boys received military (军事化的) training, and the girls learned how to manage the home and the family. There were two kinds of schools: one for children of rich families and the other for children of ordinary families.
