A Helping Hand

Our school held a sports meeting on November 15th. My group joined in the three-legged race (两人三足赛跑), a game that requires perfect cooperation. But none of us felt confident , especially when we saw other groups practicing hard. "It's  hard for us to win," someone said in a low voice.

Luckily, Mike, our captain, gave us some good  and encouraged us to keep working hard. What's more, he  to help us practice every afternoon. " not try holding hands tightly and shouting 'one, two' together?" he said. We followed his idea and made every  to practice day and night. When Lisa fell and hurt her knee, she was a little scared and wanted to stop. Our  cheers gave her courage. She became much  and decided to keep going in the race.

On the race day, our steps were in perfect rhythm with the help of Mike. Even though there was a small trip (绊倒) during the race, Mike stayed  and changed our pace without getting nervous. Finally, we crossed the finish line first! Later, we thanked Mike  supporting us all the way. He smiled and said, "Teamwork makes the dream work!"

In early 2024, a team of 15 scientists from different countries started a three-month exploration in the Amazon rainforest. Their goal was to study the effects of climate change on the rainforest's ecosystem and find new plant species for medicine.

The team set up a base camp in the central part of the Amazon rainforest. Every day, they split into small groups for research: some measured temperatures and rainfall, others studied tree growth and animal behavior, and botanists (植物学家) searched for new plant species—walking through dense forests, climbing hills, crossing rivers, and sometimes cutting thick bushes with machetes (砍刀).

During the exploration, scientists discovered that some trees grew slower because of higher temperatures. Besides, twelve new plant species (including a flower with bacteria-killing chemicals) were found, and certain bird species dropped 15% over five years.

They also faced some challenges. Hot and wet weather led to lots of insects. Occasionally (偶尔地), equipment broke down, but the scientists were able to fix it by using their tools. Once, a scientist was bitten by a poisonous (有毒的) snake, but the team's doctor gave proper treatment and saved him at last.

In April 2024, the team finished the exploration and returned home. They planned to write a report to share the findings globally, because it can help people understand the need to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Have you ever watched a TV show about nature? The Tree of Life is a new TV show in 2026. The director of this TV show is Li Xue. The main actress is Yang Zi, and the main actor (男演员) is Hu Ge. It tells a moving story about people and nature in a beautiful place in China.

The story happens in Qinghai. There are high snow mountains, wide green grasslands (草原), and a clear blue river. In the show, we can see the Sanjiangyuan area. There are many wild animals like the Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊).

In the show, life is hard for the people in the village. Some people want to cut down trees or hunt animals to make money. Others face hard weather and difficult living conditions. But a policeman (played by Hu Ge), a young policewoman (played by Yang Zi), and their friends come together to find a better way. They face many challenges, but they never give up. They work hard to protect the land, keep the water clean and keep the animals safe. They start to show the beauty of nature to visitors.

This TV show is not just a story. It shows us that when people work together, they can make a difference. Nature is like a big tree. We need to take good care of it. If we protect the environment, the land will be beautiful and our life will be happy. The show calls on everyone to care for our home—the Earth.

These activities show us that relaxing can be simple and fun. The most important thing is to enjoy the moment and feel happy.

Last Saturday, my neighbour Aunt Mary asked me to take part in the "Pet Help" activity-taking care of cats and dogs who don't have homes. I always love animals, so I said yes without1 .

A Special Day

Everyone has an unforgettable day in life. I still remember 

I'm Sun Ran, a 13-year-old girl from Shanghai. Last summer vacation, I had a study trip to the UK with my good friends. The experience was so amazing that it left me a great memory.

The most wonderful part was spending one week studying at a middle school in London. The school was beautiful and everyone there was friendly. Even now, I still remember my first day in class. The classmates greeted us warmly. Although there were language barriers (障碍) between us at times, they were very kind and they encouraged us to speak English as much as we could. I want to give special thanks to my partner Peter. He often helped me with my English and I taught him some Chinese. This improved my English skills and also brought us closer as good friends.

What touched (感动) me most was a basketball game. I missed a shot (未投中一球) and that caused our team to lose the game. I felt terrible about it. However, my teammates told me that it was OK and that we either win or learn, but we never really lose. Their encouragement made me realize that failure (失败) is just a part of life. From that moment on, I stopped worrying about making mistakes.

During the study trip, I opened my eyes, made more friends and shared more about China with others. Moreover, I discovered that we still share common hobbies and similar growing pains (苦恼) as teenagers although China and the UK have different cultures.

During the Warring States Period (战国时期) (475—221 BC), a man from the State of Wei wanted to go to the State of Chu. He  (take) a lot of money, bought a chariot (马车) and hired (雇佣) a great rider.

Chu was to the south of Wei, but the man told his rider to head straight north instead  south. A passerby (过客) stopped him and asked where he was going. "I'm going to Chu," the man said. "You need to go south for Chu. North is  wrong direction," the passerby told him. "It's fine. My horse  (run) very fast," the man said.

The passerby felt  (worry) and tried hard to stop him.  the man didn't listen, saying, "I have a lot of money and a great rider!" The passerby had to let him go. Two months later, the man  (final) arrived at a city, but soon he found  (he) in the State of Zhao.

The story tells us that no matter (不论) how good our tools (工具) are, it's hard  (success) if we make a wrong start. We should listen to  (help) advice so we won't go the wrong way.

Good stories are like magical windows. They open our minds to different worlds, help us understand others' feelings, and teach us important lessons.

A story usually has three parts: characters, the plot, and the theme (角色、情节和主题).  The plot is what happens in the story. And the theme is the lesson. For example, in the story of The Emperor's New Clothes, the main characters are an emperor and two brothers. The plot of the story follows a silly emperor and two cunning (狡猾的) brothers. The brothers tricked the emperor into wearing "magic" clothes, but everyone except (除了) one child was afraid to tell him the truth. 

Stories are powerful.  In the story of The Ugly Duckling, the duckling became a beautiful swan in the end.  From the story of The Farmer Who Lost His Horse, we learn that bad things can sometimes bring good results, and good things can go wrong too.

Some animals, like sharks, can grow new teeth after they lose their old ones. For us, it's a different story. We only get two sets of teeth in our lives: baby teeth and adult (成年的) teeth. When our adult teeth get bad or fall out, we can't grow new ones. This may bring us many problems in our daily lives.

Today, we have some ways to help with our bad teeth or missing teeth, but they are not perfect. These man-made teeth are not strong enough and cannot work well like natural teeth. Luckily, a group of scientists succeeded in growing human (人的) teeth in a lab (实验室). Lab-grown teeth are just like our natural ones. They can grow with our body, work well when we eat or speak, and they are strong.

Guess what? The scientists are now exploring how to better get lab-grown teeth into our mouths. They said, "We have two ideas. We can put young tooth cells (细胞) in people's mouths and let them grow. Or we can grow teeth in the lab first and then put them into people's mouths."

Although there is still a lot of work to do, this new technology (技术) may let us have "natural" teeth again. It will be very helpful to many people. Let's wait and see!

I'm Annie, a Grade 7 student. One day, my teacher, Mr. Smith, told our class that we would put on the play The Wizard of Oz (绿野仙踪). I read the book many times—it was one of my favourite books. I was very excited and I decided to try out for the role (角色) of Cowardly Lion.

I practised hard before the audition (试演) because I really wanted to play the role of the lion. However, things didn't go well on the audition day. When I stood in front of the class, I was so nervous (紧张的) that I didn't act well. In the end, Mr. Smith asked me to play the role of Aunt Em instead of the lion.

When I got home after the audition, I was very sad. I cried because I didn't like the role of Aunt Em at all. But my mum encouraged me."Annie, sometimes we have to do things we may not like," she said. "Although you didn't get the role you wanted, you can try to be the best Aunt Em." I took my mum's advice and practised every day.

On the night of the play, I did a good job. My mum praised me, and Mr. Smith said, "I take pride in you. You really made the best of your role." I can't wait to try out for next year's play.

Zhang Fubai, 70, is a follower of sugar painting—the intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in Tianjin. His father  a sugar painter in the past, so he received this business from his father.

"When I was a  boy, many children often asked my father for sugar paintings," he said. At 9, with his father's influence, he began to copy the flowers and animals. He even tried  sugar paintings by himself.

In 1966, he finished middle school and became a carpenter (木匠). He didn't decide to learn sugar painting until 1980. In the following years, he spent days seeing small animals in the fields and rivers. Years of practice helped him improve his many painting .

Zhang is never short of buyers because he has  about 200 sugar painting styles already. If his buyers ask him for something new, he will search and learn to make it.

For now, he is quite worried about passing on the art. "Few young people are  in learning sugar," he said, "I hope they  pay more attention to the intangible heritage."
