① I still remember last year's Talent Show in our school clearly. It was a big event, and everybody was excited to show their skills at the Talent Show. 

② A week before the Talent Show, we started preparing. My classmate Becky played the piano really well. Her fingers danced on the keys, and the music always made us feel happy. Julie was great at singing English songs—her voice was so sweet. Jeff loved Chinese kung fu and could show cool moves. After school, they were all busy preparing for the show. But I had nothing to do. What could I do?

④ Two days later, I shared an English story at the Talent Show. I never did that before. I worried about it at first. But I didn't want to give up. I looked for some useful ways on the Internet and asked my teachers for some help. When the big day finally came, I told the story really well. Many people came to watch the show, and they cheered loudly for me. I was so proud of myself! 

⑤ Now, I feel much more confident (自信的). I start to think about what to do for next year's Talent Show—to show myself again! 

A young girl was walking back home with her grandma.

Can you imagine a sea of sand three times bigger than India? This is the Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world. It lies in 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometres. 

In the Sahara, temperatures are very different during the day and at night. It is much hotter during the day than at night. During the day, the temperature can rise to 33℃. But at night, it can fall to-1℃. 

Because of the extreme（极端的）temperatures, the desert is not an ideal place for people to settle（定居）. However, here are still some tips for travellers. 

Take warm clothes and a blanket. You will need a hat, long trousers and a thick sweater to keep you warm at night. During the day, cover your body, head and face. Clothes protect you from the sun and keep water in your body. You will also need a warm blanket at night. It can get cold quickly. When the temperature drops, it makes you feel even colder. 

Try to drink some water at least once every hour. You need your water to last as long as possible. Drink only what you need. If you eat, you will get thirsty and your water will run out soon. You can eat a little, but only to stop you from feeling very hungry. Eat a little food slowly. 

It's important to stay out of the sun during the day. Make a hole under your car and lie there. This will keep you cool and help you sleep. Find a warm place to sleep at night. A small place near a tree or a rock will be the warmest. But be careful before you decide where to sleep. Dangerous animals like snakes also like to sleep in these places. Look carefully for such animals before you lie down. 

Last summer, I went on a two-day trip to the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area. The area is about 360 kilometres (northern) of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. It is a magical（奇妙的）land of mountains and forests. It is famous for the" four (wonder)" of colourful ponds （池塘）, snow mountains, alpine gorges（高山峡谷） forests. In the area, there are more than 1, 500 (difference) kinds of higher plants. It is also home  many protected animals. Some of them, such as giant pandas, are rare and (most) live in China. 

Early in the morning of the (one) day of my trip, I flew to Jiuzhai-Huanglong Airport. Then I took a bus and got to the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area an hour later. I noticed many colourful ponds in different sizes while walking around the area. They looked really beautiful! I even saw a cute little golden monkey (play) in the trees. To my surprise, it was not afraid  people. I had great fun wandering（闲逛）around the gorges. The fresh air made me (feeling) comfortable. 

I stayed there for two days and took lots of photos. I plan to visit there again with my friends in the future. 

People call Earth the" Water Planet". That's because the ocean covers over 70 percent of Earth.  It helps us in many ways. 

The ocean is like Earth's lungs（肺）.  Also, the ocean takes in 50 times more carbon dioxide（二氧化碳）than our atmosphere（大气层）。

There are some canals（运 河）connecting oceans. By using these canals, people can move things from one country to another.  Thanks to the canals, you can have all kinds of chocolate from other different countries. 

 It takes in and stores heat from the sun. Then the water in the ocean carries the heat around Earth. Without oceans, Earth would be an icy rock. Also, the ocean helps keep places from getting too hot or too cold. 

Besides, the ocean gives us different kinds of food.  And we need to protect our ocean. 

Rat remembered his own little home under the ground. He didn't see it for a long time and he missed it very much. When Badger and Mole returned to the kitchen, they saw that Rat was very eager（渴望的）to go home to the river. The underground made him uncomfortable. He likes fresh air and sunshine. 

"Relax, Rat, " said Badger. "I' ll show you a short cut through the Wild Forest and you' ll be home in no time. "

The Badger took Mole, Rat and Otter through a very long underground passage（通道）. It seemed that they walked for a very long time. However, finally they arrived at a part of the passage that was just under the ground. The passage let out into the open air. Mole could see the sunshine. Quickly, the Badger let them out of the passage and said goodbye. The three animals thanked Badger for his kindness. 

Now the Otter led them through the rest of the Wild Forest. The Otter was almost as powerful an animal as the Badger, so Mole and Rat felt safe with him. Finally, they reached the forest end. They were looking at the green fields and the river was nearby. All of the animals were very happy to be going home, away from the dark forest. 

Happily, the animals hurried toward the river back to Rat's house. As he ran, the Mole realized he was really a field animal. He might live under the ground like Badger, but he also liked the little gardens and the fresh air and sunshine. The Wild Forest was not his kind of place.
