My hometown is a very beautiful town near the sea.  Our old town center was built in the 1500s. It's a place where visitors can go back in time to a different world in the past.

Welcome to Classic Reading. I'm your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I've become interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry (诗). I have also known some Chinese poets, such as Li Bai and Du Fu. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet He Zhizhang. 

Here is an English version (版本) of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator (翻译家) of ancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let's take a look at his translation. 

Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young.

Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue.

My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I.

"Where are you from, dear sir?" they ask with beaming eyes.

In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace (出生地). It's been many years since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent (口音). Things did not change much, but the people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem. 

Personally, I like this poem because it reminds (使想起) me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or how long I've left, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart.

Children usually like animals, but many zoos are too far away from children's houses. A "small zoo" in Qingdao is special—it is in a welfare home (福利院). 

The Qingdao Children's Welfare Home has about 200 children and most of them have health problems. They are lucky because the zoo is near their house. They can see animals out of the windows. 

A big boy there isn't in good health. The head of the welfare home visits him every day. On one visit, the head asks, "What do you want to do after you get well?" The boy says, "I want to see animals. " Then the head says, "I'll take you to the zoo after you get well. " But, the next day, the boy leaves the world. "I am very sorry because the boy's dream doesn't come true, " the head says. Just then he wants to build a small zoo in the welfare home. It will be for the children who love animals. So here comes the small zoo. 

Also, the zoo is different from others because all the animals are children's favourite. Now there are horses, sheep and peafowl (孔雀) in the small zoo. When the weather is good, the children go to watch and have fun with them. 

"Staying with animals will help make the children healthy, " says Yang Suhong, one of the doctors in the welfare home. 

Hi, my name is Danielle. My favourite  (animal) are rabbits and I have a pet rabbit, Guus. He is 3 years old. He looks really big and he is heavy. Guus is not afraid  people. He is cute and  (friend). So many people stop to play with Guus when I take  walk with him.
