My Summer Camp Adventure

Last summer, I joined a two-week summer camp in the Green Mountains. At first, I was nervous about being away from home for so long, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life.

Each day started with a 6:30 a.m. wake-up call. After quickly getting dressed, we gathered for morning exercises—jumping jacks, jogging and stretching—to get our energy up. Breakfast was always simple but filling: oatmeal, fresh fruit and milk. Then we divided into groups for different activities. My group spent most mornings hiking along the forest trails. Our guide, a retired park ranger, taught us to identify different types of trees and birds. One morning, we even spotted a small deer hiding behind a bush!

Afternoons were more relaxed. Sometimes we played team games like capture the flag or volleyball by the lake. Other days, we learned practical skills: how to start a campfire safely, read a map using a compass, or tie different kinds of knots. I was especially proud when I finally mastered the bowline knot, which the guide said is "the most useful knot in the wilderness."

One of the most memorable days was when we helped a local farmer pick apples. We spent three hours filling baskets with ripe, red apples under the hot sun. It was hard work—my back ached and my hands got sticky from the juice—but when we saw the farmer's grateful smile, it felt worth it. That evening, we made apple pie over the campfire. The crust was a bit burnt, but it tasted amazing.

By the end of the camp, I had made new friends from different parts of the country and learned skills I never thought I would. Most importantly, I realized that I could handle challenges on my own, without my parents' help. It was a summer I'll never forget.

Last summer holiday, my family and I spent a wonderful week in the countryside. It was my first time to stay there for such a long time, so everything felt1 and exciting.
