The Wonderful World of Bamboo
Bamboo is one of the most fascinating plants on Earth. Found in many parts of Asia, Africa and South America, it's more than just a plant—it's a vital resource for both people and animals.
What makes bamboo special? For starters, it's one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. Some species can grow up to one meter in a single day! This rapid growth makes bamboo an excellent renewable resource, as it can be harvested every 3-5 years without killing the plant. Unlike trees, which take decades to regrow, bamboo bounces back quickly, making it environmentally friendly.
Bamboo is also incredibly strong and flexible. For centuries, people have used it to build houses, bridges and furniture. In some countries, it's even used to make musical instruments like flutes and xylophones. Modern designers are finding new uses for bamboo too: bicycle frames, clothing fabric and even eco-friendly packaging that replaces plastic.
Animals depend on bamboo too. Giant pandas rely almost entirely on bamboo for food—an adult panda can eat up to 38 kilograms of bamboo in one day! But pandas aren't the only ones who love it: elephants, gorillas and many species of birds also use bamboo for food or shelter. Bamboo forests are home to countless creatures, making them important ecosystems.
Bamboo shoots, the young sprouts of the plant, are also a popular food in many cultures. They can be stir-fried, pickled or added to soups, and are rich in vitamins and fiber.
From construction to cuisine, bamboo plays an important role in our world. By protecting bamboo forests, we help both people and animals thrive.

Our Family Chore System
In our house, everyone has to do chores—and not just because our parents say so. We've found that sharing household tasks makes our home nicer to live in and teaches us important life skills.
My parents created a chore chart that hangs on the fridge. It lists who does what, and we rotate jobs every week so no one gets stuck with the worst tasks. On weekdays, I have two main chores: making my bed right after waking up and setting the table before dinner. My little sister, who is in second grade, feeds our cat and waters the plants. My dad takes out the trash every night, and my mom washes the dishes—though sometimes we trade jobs if someone is busy.
Weekends are busier. I clean my room thoroughly, dusting the shelves and vacuuming the floor, while my sister cleans the bathroom sink. Together, we help our parents clean the living room: folding blankets, arranging pillows and wiping the coffee table. Once a month, we do "deep cleaning"—washing the windows, cleaning out the fridge and organizing the garage.
At first, I complained about having to do chores, especially on weekends when all I wanted to do was play. But now I realize that it feels good to contribute to our family. When my mom says, "Thanks for helping keep our home nice," I feel proud. Plus, I've learned skills that will help me when I live on my own someday—like how to fold a fitted sheet properly (which is harder than it looks!) and how to clean without wasting too much water.
Doing chores teaches us responsibility, teamwork and respect for each other's work. It's not always fun, but it's definitely worth it.
(1)、How do they decide who does which chores?A、They have a chore chart and rotate jobs weekly. B、The parents do all the chores. C、The oldest child does all the chores. D、They never do chores.(2)、What is the writer's weekday chore?A、Feeding the cat. B、Making the bed. C、Cleaning the bathroom. D、Washing the dishes.(3)、When do they do "deep cleaning"?A、Every day. B、Every weekend. C、Once a month. D、Once a year.(4)、How does the writer feel about doing chores now?A、Angry and frustrated. B、Proud and responsible. C、Bored and tired. D、Scared and nervous.(5)、What does the writer learn from doing chores?A、How to avoid work. B、Responsibility, teamwork and respect. C、How to waste time. D、How to argue with family members. -

Two Friends, One Friendship
Mei and I have been best friends since we were in third grade. Even though we're as different as night and day, our friendship has only grown stronger over the years.
Physically, we look nothing alike. Mei is tall and thin with straight black hair that falls past her shoulders, while I'm shorter and have curly brown hair that I usually wear in a ponytail. Our personalities are just as different: Mei is outgoing and loves being the center of attention—she's the star of our school's drama club and never gets nervous speaking in front of crowds. I, on the other hand, am quiet and prefer one-on-one conversations. I'd rather read a book in the library than go to a loud party.
But despite these differences, we have a lot in common. We both love animals—Mei has a pet rabbit named Snowball, and I have a dog called Max—and we often volunteer at the local animal shelter on weekends. We're also both passionate about environmental protection; last month, we organized a school clean-up day together. Academically, we balance each other out: Mei is excellent at math and helps me with equations, while I'm better at English and help her write essays.
What I love most about our friendship is that Mei encourages me to step out of my comfort zone—like when she convinced me to join the school newspaper—and I help her slow down and appreciate quiet moments. Our differences don't divide us; they make our friendship special.
(1)、How long have Mei and the writer been friends?A、Since kindergarten. B、Since third grade. C、Since middle school. D、For one year.(2)、What is Mei like?A、Shy and quiet. B、Tall with curly hair. C、Outgoing and confident. D、Short and thin.(3)、What do they both enjoy doing?A、Acting in plays. B、Reading books. C、Volunteering at an animal shelter. D、Going to loud parties.(4)、How do they help each other academically?A、Mei helps with English, and the writer helps with math. B、Mei helps with math, and the writer helps with English. C、They both help each other with science. D、They don't help each other with schoolwork.(5)、What makes their friendship special?A、They are exactly the same. B、Their differences complement each other. C、They have known each other for a short time. D、They live in the same neighborhood.
