Getting English Language Learners to Put Down the Books and Have Some Fun
Even if there's so much about English that can be learned from a book or even in a traditional classroom setting, a lot of the language can still be learned best in more relaxing situations where students are having fun. Here are some suggestions.
★Communicate with strangers. If you live in an area filled with English speakers, get students out of the classroom. Students may not speak to strangers, but they'll hear conversations taking place and may begin to understand how the words learnt in the classroom are actually used in everyday speech.
★Let their guard down. One difficult thing for learners is confidence (自信) when they speak English. Fun, activities, especially those outside of the classroom, give students a chance to feel relaxed. It may take a bit of time at the beginning, but once students get into it, they'll start to get confidence.
★Make use of English media (媒体). Most recorded language instruction is pretty boring and it can get tiring hearing the same voice repeat the same phrases. They will hear common expressions and more everyday conversations in the movie. IF they're not sure about something they hear It can turn into a more formal lesson once back in the classroom.
★Casual (随意的) conversations give learners the chance to hear or use English in situations. They can talk all they want about expression souse while dining out or informal words to use with friends, but it takes a trip to
Me Donald's or a picnic in the park for many of those expressions to truly set in.
A.You can let students go to a movie in English.
B.Put them among other English speakers.
C.They may hate to speak English.
D.Hear or use English in situations.
E.They will speak more freely.

Bunny is a dog famous for seeming to communicate with her owner through buttons on a soundboard on the ground. When pushed, the buttons say words like "outside", "play" and "ouch". In a video, Bunny pushes the button for "ouch". Then the owner asks, "Where's your 'ouch'?" Then Bunny pushes the button for "paw", There happens to be a piece of wood in her paw that is causing her pain.
This seems like it could be true communication-but before scientists can answer that question, they have to take a step back and answer another question: Can the dogs even understand the words they hear as each button is pressed? A study of about 60 dogs found that dogs seem to understand words like "play" and "outside"- whether those words arc spoken by their owner or come from a button, The dogs figured out the words without seeing people's body language, and even if their owner wasn't there.
The fact that they can understand any language at all is amazing. It's like a testament (证明) to their attention, learning ability, and adaptability asclcver animals because they don't have anything like that in their natural system," says Alexandra Horowitz, a professor at Barnard College.
But what about the idea that dogs and other animals actively communicate back to their owners through buttons?
Are they really able to "speak" back? Rossana and his team arc looking into that question next. Now that they've proven that pets can understand the words they're hearing, the researchers are working on a big science project. It includes about ten thousand dogs, seven hundred cats, and some horses, goats and pigs.
One can only hope that this line of research may one day get us closer to answering the question: Do our pets want to communicate with us?

D、To catch her owner's attention.(2)、What did the study find about the dogs?A、They remember simple words quickly. B、They seem to understand certain words. C、They can only communicate with their owners. D、They are good at learning people's body language.(3)、What can we infer from Alexandra Horowitz's words?A、Dogs are more clever than we think. B、Dogs are born to understand language. C、Dogs can hardly fit in with new environments. D、Dogs can be trained to do more things for people,(4)、What will Rossana and his team study next?A、How people can get along with dogs. B、Whether dogs understand other animals. C、How animals develop their language skills. D、Whether animals can communicate with humans. -

Housing officials say that they have recently noticed something different: students seem to lack both the will and the ability to deal with common conflicts (中突). "We have students who are angry with each other, and they text each other in the sane room," says a teacher. "So many of our conflicts arc because kids don't know how to solve a problem by proper discussion."
As any pop psychologist will tell you, bottled feelings can Iead to silent discontent (不满) that might boil over into sadness and anger. At the University of Florida, feelings-related fights take place about once a week; the university's director of housing education says, "Over the past five years, roommate conflicts have risen. Students don't have person-to-person discussions and don't know how to deal with them." The problem is most surprising among freshmen; housing professionals say they see improvement as students move toward graduation, but some never seem to improve, and they worry about how such students will face conflicts after college.
Administrators guess that dependence on smartphones and the Internet may have made it easier for young people to stay away from uncomfortable meetings. Why express anger in person when you can act out in a text? "Things are posted on someone's wall online like: Oh, my roommate kept me up all night studying," says Dana Pysz, an assistant director at the University of California, Los Angeles. "It's a different way to express their conflict with each other, so even more conflicts will be created as conflicts go public." In recent focus groups at North Carolina State University, dorm residents said they would not even deal with noisy neighbors on their floor.
Administrators point to parents who have fixed their children's problems all their lives. Now, in college, these children have lost the skills to solve even the smallest conflicts, Some parents continue to interfere(干涉)on campus.
(1)、Why do conflicts between roommates rise?A、They can't get used to shared rooms. B、They don't experience a lot at their age. C、They are loved at home and self-centered. D、They are poor in discussing and solving problems.(2)、What can we learn from paragraph 2?A、Freshmen are the easiest to get into conflict with others. B、Some students still can't solve conflicts when they graduate. C、Roommate conflicts are falling in American universities now. D、Teachers need to have more person-to-person talks with students.(3)、What does Dana Pysz think of roommates expressing conflicts on social media?A、It makes things worse. B、It is worth trying. C、It is surprising. D、IT is useful.(4)、What does the writer hope parents do?A、Help deal with their children's problems. B、Pay more attention to their children's feelings. C、Keep in touch with their children to offer help. D、Teach their children the skills to solve conflicts.
