Oliver Twist was a poor young boy with no parents.From an early age,he experienced nothing but cold,hunger and unkindness.With no one to love him and no home to go to,he ran away to London—a huge,unfamiliar and chilly( 冷漠的)city,leaving him helpless and lonely.
Soon he met a man named Fagin,who seemed kind and friendly.Fagin offered Oliver food and a place to stay,trying to make Oliver trust him.In fact,Fagin wanted Oliver to join his group and learn to steal.Oliver had no idea about their secret.
One day,two of Fagin's boys took Oliver out.When no one was paying attention,they stole a handkerchief (手帕)from an old gentleman,Mr Brownlow.Seeing Oliver nearby,the old man thought he was the thief.
"Stop the boy!"Mr Brownlow shouted.
People ran after Oliver at once.Too frightened and weak to run,he fellto the ground.When Mr Brownlow came closer,he was shocked by the boy's helpless look.
"Did you steal my handkerchief?"Mr Brownlow asked softly.
"I.….I did not do it,"Oliver answered in a low voice,too weak to say anything else.
Mr Brownlow looked deeply into the boy's eyes and saw his honesty.He realized immediately that Oliver was telling the truth,and felt deep sympathy for him.
"Don't be afraid.I will take you home,"he said gently.
He brought Oliver back to his house,where his kind housekeeper Mrs Bedwin looked after him carefully.She gave him clean clothes,warm food and a soft bed.For the first time in his life, Oliver felt safe and loved,forgetting all the terrible things about Fagin and his group.
