Every morning, Betty gets up early and makes delicious sandwiches for her family. At weekends, she often helps her mom with housework. And she is never late for school and always performs well. She often wins prizes at the school talent show, so people in town kindly call her "Miss Perfect.  "

Last Friday, she joined a cooking club at school. When she walked to the fridge to take out some eggs, she suddenly tripped（绊了一下）. Luckily, she caught the eggs before they fell onto the floor.  "That was close！ " she said to herself. She couldn't stop thinking about her almost-mistake all day. Later, her friends asked her to go ice-skating, but she said no. She was afraid to fall down in front of others. 

That night came the school talent show. Betty planned to juggle(杂耍) a ball, a toy, and a water balloon on stage. At first, everything went perfectly as usual. Suddenly, the balloon popped(爆开)！ Water went everywhere. It was a big mistake. However, Betty decided not to cry or run away. She laughed. Soon, all the people laughed with her together warmly. That night, Betty slept well and felt relaxed. 

After that, Betty stopped caring too much about being perfect. She learnt an important lesson: It's    ▲    to make mistakes. Now her sandwiches are sometimes not so delicious, and she even falls down when she goes ice-skating now and then. People still love her— they just call her Betty now. 

The Spider and the Wisdom（智慧）

1[Spider's Plan]

A spider walks through the village with a pot. 

Spider (to himself): I'm clever, but not wise. I want all the world's wisdom—just for myself！ He asks the villagers for a little wisdom each. Soon, the pot is full. 

Spider: Now I have all the wisdom！ No one else can have it. 

2[Spider's Problem]

Spider worries someone will take the pot. He decides to hide（藏）it at the top of a tall tree. But holding the pot in his front legs, he keeps falling. His son watches. 

Son: Father, tie（系）the pot on your back. Then you can climb easily. 

3[Spider's Anger]

Spider ties the pot on his back and climbs up without trouble. At the top, he becomes angry. 

Spider (to his son): How can this be? I have all the wisdom, but you are wiser than me！

He throws the pot down in anger. 

4[The Wisdom Spreads（传播）]

The pot breaks. Wisdom flies everywhere—into the air, the river, the trees, and into every person. 

Son: Father, what did you do?

Spider: I wanted all the wisdom for myself. Now it's gone. 

Son: Maybe it's better this way. 

Spider: You' re right. No one can keep all the wisdom alone. From now on, I will share what I know and also learn from others so that we can all become wiser.

The power of teamwork

Fan Kuan was a famous painter of the Song dynasty. He made many good (painting). Young artists wanted Fan to teach them. "You must learn from a  (great) teacher than me. He lives all around you.  (he) name is Nature, " Fan said. 

Fan Kuan believed that if you wanted to understand nature, you had to touch it, smell it, and listen to it. He lived in the mountains and  (watch) the seasons change. 

One morning, Fan met  old farmer on a mountain path. The farmer was scared at first,  he relaxed after knowing Fan was not a danger. Then, Fan Kuan (invite) by the farmer to his home for a meal In return, he painted a picture for the farmer. Everything  the painting looked so real that the farmer was shocked. 

As Fan was leaving, the farmer asked  he lived. "Mountains or forests, east or west, all can be my home, "Fan answered (quiet). The farmer thought Fan was strange. Fan just smiled and said, "I have lived in nature for many years. "

I can still remember the day Mr. Pearson asked me to wait after class for a" quick talk". He was my 1 . I wanted to give up my schoolwork. I didn't really see the point in trying. 

So that afternoon, Mr. Pearson sat down next to me. He asked me 2 I wanted to be in the future. I could answer that question easily 3 I was always thinking about it. 

"I wanted to fix cars because I loved cars. "

After that, Mr. Pearson was always there for me to10 any problems at school. And every month or two, he asked me, "How are things on that mountain?"

"No views yet, "I always said, "but I'm still going up. "

Gongbu was one of the three members that reached the top of Qomolangma in 1960. We did an interview with him about the famous climb.

Reporter: You finished such a climb in 1960. 

Gong Bu: Climbing the Second Step. It was a 30-metre-high wall of rock near the top. No one had ever climbed it before. The air was thin and the wind was strong. 

Reporter: What is the most unforgettable about the Second Step?

Gong Bu: Well, it is Liu Lianman. Then he said, "I' ll be the ladder. " He let us stand on his shoulders to move up. 

Reporter: What happened then?

Gong Bu: Liu was too tired to keep going. He chose to stay behind. We three got to the top and planted our national flag.

Gong Bu: Yes, actually all of us. Qu Yinhua took off his heavy shoes to stand on Liu' s shoulders.  He even lost all his toes. 

Reporter: What made your team finish the hard task finally?

Gong Bu: Teamwork matters so much. Without it, we could never have made it.

Do trees have memories? This may seem strange, but trees can actually tell us things about the past. When a tree is cut down, you can see rings（树轮）inside. These are the memories of trees. They can tell lots of secrets from the forest. 

Every year the tree grows, there is a new ring. Scientists can count the rings to tell the age of the tree. They study tree rings to learn about the climate and the environment. Tree rings are a record of the climate. Some rings are quite wide. This is a good sign because it means the tree grew well and was healthy. This happens when the tree gets enough sun and rain. When it doesn't rain enough, the tree grows less, and the rings are narrow. Thanks to this, scientists can look at how the rings change to learn about climate change in one place. 

Scientists also look at tree rings to study natural disasters. For example, sometimes there is a black area on a tree ring. This usually means there was a forest fire. If scientists count the rings from the black area, they can answer difficult questions, such as"When did the fire happen?"and"How common are forest fires?"

Tree rings can also help us understand human history. For example, using tree rings, scientists can tell the age of old buildings. Nowadays, they can even look at the chemistry of each tree ring to know exactly when the tree was cut down. With this new method, a team of scientists discovered that a Viking village in Canada was built in the year 1021. 

It's amazing that trees can tell us so much, even though they cannot talk!

 [School gym after volleyball practice. Teammates rest on the bench. Annie is alone. She is practising her serve（发球）against the wall. Coach Ken stands nearby, watching. ]

Annie:(to herself)I'll never get this right. Everyone else is playing games, but I'm stuck here serving. . . 

Coach Ken is always picking on me. I'm so tired of being the worst player on the team. 

Annie:(shouting, almost crying)I give up! I really can't keep trying anymore!

Coach Ken:Annie, do you really want to leave like this? You've been practising harder than anyone. Are you going to throw that all away?

Annie:I'm just. . . so tired of trying. I try so hard, but I make no progress. 

Coach Ken:Slow progress is still progress. You know, if you give up, you will never win. 

Annie:I'll never win anyway. I'm no good at volleyball!

Coach Ken:But you're getting better. We all see your effort and we all believe in you, Annie. (Annie looks up, surprised. She sees the kindness in Coach Ken's eyes.)

Annie: You're right. I can't give up every time something is hard. I'll never learn anything that way. (Annie calms down and turns back to the court. Seeing Annie cheer up, her teammates smile and stand up. )

Teammates: We're glad you stayed! We'll practise with you. You're part of the team!(Annie smiles. She picks up the volleyball and starts practising again. Then she notices a small note on the chair. It says: Don't be afraid of growing slowly. Be afraid of standing still. )
