Work Songs

Work songs are also called "haoxi". People sing them when they are in heavy work, like moving big rocks or pulling boats by the river. Work songs can always light up the spirits of working people.

According to different jobs, there are different kinds of work songs: field work songs, boatman work songs, fisherman work songs and workshop work songs.

Work songs have four features (特点). First, they are always expressed in a very direct way, which makes it possible to show the feelings naturally. Second, their rhythms (节奏) change with the physical movements of working groups. Some rhythms are heavy and strong, while others are short and light. There are also long and comforting ones. Third, because of the nature of physical work, the music forms of work songs are simple and repeated. Fourth, the singing is done through a leading singer and answering singers. The leading singer would sing to the group to encourage them, and then answering singers sing together by repeating part of the leading sentences.

For thousands of years, work songs have played an important role in the struggle of working people against nature. They show the wisdom of brave working people. Therefore, they have both historical and cultural values.

Work Songs

Lily,  fifteen-year-old girl, manages a program at school — the Buddy Bench (同伴长椅).

Students  feel lonely at school can go and sit on the "buddy bench". It makes other kids know that someone needs a friend and that they should invite him or her  (play). Lily knows there is nothing  (bad) than feeling lonely. With the help of the bench, she  (bring) kids together and helps many shy kids make new friends.

Sometimes animals are so badly injured that common medicine cannot help them. However, animal lovers can still come to save them. In Brazil, a group of them use their knowledge of medicine and computer technology to create man-made body parts for those injured animals.

The technology is called three-dimensional (3D) printing, which can create all kinds of objects from a cup to a toy truck. It takes a lot of plastic. Now a Canadian company has solved this problem. It has invented the ProtoCycler, which can turn waste plastic such as bottles into the plastic that can be used in a 3D printer.

Last year, the Brazil team used 3D printing to help a poor tortoise (陆龟), Freddy. A forest fire had burned 85% of her shell, the hardest part of her back. In other words, her shell was nearly gone. The whole team worked together to give her another chance at life.

First, they took photos of Freddy and of a healthy tortoise with a complete shell. Then, they used a computer program to design a new shell that would fit her exactly. A 3D printer created the new plastic shell. After that, the finished shell was attached to (贴附于) Freddy's body. The new shell fit well, but the white plastic was not a natural look. Later, an artist painted the shell so that it looked like a real one. The results were very fantastic. Freddy now lives with the people who helped save her life.

Sometimes people who are close to you are facing an illness or other big changes in their life. When they go through hard times, you probably wish you could pitch in but might not be sure how. Just wanting to support them is a good place to begin. Here are some ideas to consider.

Your friends or family members may feel like talking about what they are going through, or they may not. If they want to share, you can help by listening. If they don't, that's OK too. You could also ask how you can support them. You could show them they are in your thoughts by making a card with a note inside, like "Thinking of you!"

If possible, ask if they would like to do something together, like taking a walk, watching a movie, or eating out. If it's a family member who lives far away, you can ask if they want to video chat or talk on the phone. You could also send them photos of your day to help them feel connected.

People who care about you want you to keep your daily life as usual, even when they are going through something difficult. But there is something you can do. You just need to make sure what they really need. For example, if a classmate is ill in hospital, helping him catch up with classwork is better than doing the dishes, taking care of a pet, or cleaning the apartment.

Remember that your feelings are important, too. It is normal to worry about someone you're close to, and it can be helpful to talk to your parents, teachers, or someone you trust. You can also ask questions about anything you don't understand. This is a better choice than searching for information on the Internet.

It is 5 June, World Environment Day (WED). Our class goes to a forest park to learn more about trees.

Trees keep the air clean. They take in harmful gases from the air and produce oxygen for us to breathe. They are main fighters against air pollution. We get fruit and oil from trees. Tea also comes from leaves of trees. Lots of tables and chairs are made of wood. We cannot imagine a world without trees.

However, in many parts of the world, people cut down huge areas of forests. It raises the temperature, causes animals to move or die and turns farmlands into deserts. So, China started a tree-planting program and has planted more trees than the rest of the world in the last 50 years. Who are some of the people behind the achievement? Let's find out.

In Jiangxi Province, Zou Lianying has been planting trees on her land since the age of 64. She sold her cows and pigs and borrowed money to open a forest farm. The farm has more than 8 million trees. But she won't cut down even one tree and still lives very simply. She believes the forest she is planting will be a gift to future generations.

Near Beijing, Wei Guiying and a team of helpers have planted millions of trees. They have been working at this for more than 20 years. It hasn't been easy for her. She also borrowed money to do this. Seeing millions of trees around her, she says proudly, "I'm a millionaire."

Not everyone loves earthworms(蚯蚓). Some people feel uncomfortable when they see them. Yet these small animals are very important. 73. In fact, we should thank earthworms for many of the delicious and healthy foods on our plates. They are good friends of the farmers.

Earthworms can be found in most places around the world. 74. They live their whole lives in soil(土壤). An earthworm has no eyes, ears, or nose. Instead, it senses the dark environment through the nerve cells(神经细胞) along its body. These nerve cells help the earthworm move through the soil. Most earthworms are generally between 10 and 30 centimeters long. However, if you traveled to Australia, you might see the world's longest earthworm—the Gippsland earthworm. It can grow up to 3 meters long.

Earthworms help farmers in several ways. As they move through the soil, they create tunnels(管状通道). Plants grow poorly if the soil is too dry and hard. The tunnels help air and water reach the underground parts of plants. This makes the soil wet and loose(疏松的). Earthworms also eat dead leaves and dead plants. Then they pass the waste(粪便) into the soil. Their waste is filled with nutrients(营养). This makes the soil rich.

The earthworms may be small, but they are very important. They help feed us and keep us healthy.

Squeaky, a little grey mouse, lived in a dark hole with his mother.

What is a grassland?

A grassland is a biome(生物群落区) that is covered with grasses. Grass is everything to a grassland. Grass is food for animals. Grass can keep the grassland warm and wet. Grass stops the wind from blowing away the soil(土壤).

There are two kinds of grasslands. Temperate grasslands are one kind. Temperate means the environment has a mild climate(温和气候) and four seasons. Temperate grasslands have rich soil. Tropical grasslands are the other kind. Tropical means the environment is near the equator and is warm all year round. Tropical grasslands have a rainy season and a dry season. They usually have more trees and poorer soil than temperate grasslands.

Both temperate and tropical grasslands have a yearly rainfall of 25 to 75 centimeters. With so little rain, the land can dry out. Fires can start easily.

What adaptations(适应性) help grassland plants and animals survive(存活)?

Different grasslands have different kinds of grasses. However, nearly all grassland grasses have adaptations to growing well in dry conditions.

Grasses have deep rots. The roots can take in water and keep nutrients(营养). When a fire burns, everything above ground is destroyed(破坏). Down below, the roots survive. They hold on to their water and nutrients.

After a fire, new stalks can grow from the roots. The old, dead grass becomes part of soil. Gradually, the soil gets richer and richer.

Most grasses have adaptations to growing from the roots. This helps them survive and grow after animals eat the tops of the plants.

Trees that grow in tropical grasslands also have adaptations that help them survive. For example, the baobab tree grows leaves only during the wet season. It loses its leaves during the dry season.

Many kinds of animals live in grasslands. All of them have adaptations that help them survive. Some grassland animals have flat teeth for eating grass. For example, with their flat teeth, zebras bite off(咬下)the tops of grasses that are difficult to cut.

Katie and her friends, Pedro and JoJo, took a trip to the beach with their families.

"Let's do everything together! We'll have so much fun!" said Katie.

"Let's build the biggest sand castle(城堡) in the world!" shouted Pedro.

"That's not fun!" JoJo said.

"But I think it is," replied Katie. "Let's start. You two carry the water to me. I will build the castle."

After lunch, Katie said, "Let's lie and rest on the blanket(毯子)."

"Katie, move over! You are using up the whole blanket!" said Pedro. But Katie did not move. Pedro and JoJo had to lie on the uncomfortable sand.

"Let's go to the swings," Pedro said. The three friends raced each other. Katie got there first and took the only empty swing. JoJo and Pedro watched her swinging for a while. Then they walked away.

"What's wrong with them?" Katie wondered. Katie got her beach ball and began throwing it around, but it wasn't any fun. Just then, JoJo, Pedro and JoJo's dad began swimming. Katie ran over, shouting, "I want to swim too!"

"No!" shouted JoJo. "You can't! The sea is ours!"

"That's silly," Katie laughed. "The sea can't belong to you."

"And all the French fries don't belong to you," said Pedro.

"And the blanket and the swing!" added JoJo.

"Uh-oh!" said Katie. "I think I have been a meanie(吝啬鬼)."

"For sure!" said Pedro and JoJo.

"I'm sorry!" said Katie. "I won't be a meanie anymore. Is it okay if I share the sea with you?"

"Yes!" said her friends. And there was full of laughter in the sea.

Once there was a beautiful big red wagon in the window of a toy store. Billy and George often came to the store window to look at the toys. Among them, the boys liked the red wagon best.

"I have got many toys, but I wish I had that wagon," said Billy. "I could use it for so many things."

"I wish it were mine," said George. "I would play with it all day."

One day George's mother called, "I need some butter. Will you go to the store for me?"

"Wait a minute, Mom," said George. "I want to play for a while." But he had such a good time that he forgot all about going to the store.

The very same day Billy's mother said. "Billy, I need some vegetables and fruits from the store. Will you get them for me, please?" "Yes, Mom," answered Billy. "I'll go right now."

When Billy went past George's house, George called, "Come here, Billy. Let's play together."

"I can't stop now," answered Billy. "I'll play with you after I come back."

That evening Billy helped his father clean up the leaves. They put them together, carried them to the garden and burned them.

"I could do more work," said Billy, "if I had a big red wagon."

George's father was cleaning up leaves, too. He needed a helper, but George was in the park playing ball.

The two boys would often meet at the toy store. One day when they saw the big red wagon, it had a green card that said SOLD on it. The boys walked home slowly. They fell sad. They wondered who would get it.

Next morning Billy's mother called, "Billy! Wake up! Wake up!"

Billy opened his eyes. He saw something in his room that made him completely awake.

There was the big red wagon! It had a card on it, but this one did not say SOLD. It said, "Happy Birthday to a good helper who needs a red wagon."
