James Cook was a wonderful explorer. When he was young, he worked as  an apprentice （学徒） on a boat.  In 1770, Cook took a trip to New Zealand and Australia. His trips helped guide lots of explorers and provided the first correct map of the Pacific.

At Beijing's 798 Art Zone, works by Italian artist Jacopo Della Ragione titled Conquista drew crowds of visitors. Jacopo was born and raised in Florence, Italy's art capital, and he has had a deep love for art ever since he was a little kid.

Before arriving in China, Jacopo barely knew anything about this country apart from Marco Polo' s journey to the mysterious land of China in the 13th century. Great curiosity drove him to move to Beijing in 2001."I originally only planned a two-week trip to get to know China. Yet I soon realized such a short time was far from enough.Up to now, I have lived here for over 20 years," Jacopo shared.

At first, Jacopo worked as an art and creative director for local design, advertising and media firms. In 2018, he left his full-time office job to become a professional artist focusing on abstract paintings.

Ancient architecture, folk music, traditional handicrafts—— all elements of Chinese life serve as inspiration for his creations. To Jacopo, nothing brings more joy than watching ordinary visitors with little knowledge of modern art become attracted to his pieces and finally realize art exists in daily life.

After more than twenty years living in China, he is shocked by the nation's fast growth. He believes modern Chinese art holds huge potential（潜力）, especially with young local artists doing wonderful work to carry forward fine traditional Chinese culture.

Apart from painting, Jacopo also organizes art shows to open a window for people to experience Italian cultural charm. Through his efforts, Chinese audiences gain a better understanding of Italy. Meanwhile, he brings Chinese culture to Italian people with his artworks. In 2024, he intended to launch more communication activities between artists and cultural organizations. These events allow Chinese and Italian people to appreciate each other's art, creating chances for communication and mutual understanding.

"The Five-Star Red Flag flutters in the wind..." Whenever we hear the song, we sing along. The song is called Ode to the Motherland. It was written by Wang Xin.

On October 1, 1949, Wang Xin attended the Founding Ceremony of the People's Republic of China. He was deeply moved and decided to create a song for New China immediately, filled with love and national pride.

One day in September 1950, on his way to Beijing Railway Station, Wang Xin passed Tian' anmen Square. The minute he saw the Five-Star Red Flag waving in the wind, several lines of lyrics（歌词） popped into his head. On the train back to Tianjin, as he viewed the farmland and hills outside the window, the main body of the song gradually took shape, "Over the mountains, across the plains…"

When Wang Xin got home, he shouted excitedly, "I finished it! I finished it!" He finished the whole piece without delay. The next morning, he visited a local newspaper office, wishing to publish his work. However, his request was turned down.

Still, Wang Xin never lost heart. He headed a music team to perform this tune in various areas. The tune filled listeners with strength, self-respect and deeper devotion to their homeland.

In September 1951, Ode to the Motherland was finally printed in People's Daily and became widely known nationwide. After that, it was played and sung at numerous key national ceremonies.

Wang Xin once said, "I have produced lots of pieces in my lifetime, but I think Ihave only created‘two songs'. One is Ode to the Motherland, composed with musical notes, and the other is a heartfelt tune dedicated to our motherland."

Li Shizhen, the sage（圣人） of herbal medicine, made great contributions to the development and spread of TCM in Chinese history.

He was born in Qichun, Hubei in 1518. Medicine was a family tradition. His grandfather and father both worked as village doctors. From childhood, he followed his father into mountains to look for medicinal herbs. Gradually, he gained rich first-hand knowledge of plants, animals and simple medical treatments.

At that time, most families hoped their children could become officials. His father also expected him to pass the Imperial Examinations to get a government job.Unluckily, Li failed many times. He then completely gave up official paths and devoted himself to medical research. In 1551, he became well-known after curing a sick royal child. Five years later, he worked in the Imperial Medical Institute（太医院）. There he read lots of rare ancient medical books and discovered many wrong and unclear records.To correct these mistakes, he decided to give up his position and write a complete herbal medical book.

Later, Li travelled to many remote areas. He collected wild herbs and learned practical folk medical knowledge from farmers and local doctors. He also studied hundreds of medical documents day and night. After 27 years of hard research, he finished the first draft of Compendium of Materia Medica（《本草纲目》） and kept improving it all his life. The book records over 1,800 kinds of herbs with clear explanations. It is a valuable medical treasure of China and a world-famous TCMclassic. It has been translated into many languages and studied by medical learners worldwide.

Zhang Qian in ancient China is regarded as"the first Chinese stepping into the world". In 138 BC, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was interested in building up commercial ties（商业纽带） with lands that were far away, but his enemy the Xiongnu（匈奴）1 him from communicating with other countries. As an official who knew the Xiongnu well, Zhang Qian was 2 by the emperor to meet the Yuezhi people to ask for their help against the Xiongnu.

On the way to the Western Regions, he was 3 by the Xiongnu and forced to stay in the Xiongnu Region for more than ten years. During this period, he was waiting for a 4 to get back to his motherland and he never forgot his task.
