Australia's parliament (议会) has passed a new "right to disconnect" bill that the government has proposed.
The law would prevent employers from asking their workers to keep their phones and computers turned on outside of work hours. Employers who ask employees to do so could be fined. Its purpose is to protect workers' rights and improve the work-life balance in the country. Similar laws are already in place in France, Spain and other European nations.
Australia's employment minister, Tony Burke, said most lawmakers have expressed support for the bill. Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, discussed the law on Wednesday. " What we are simply saying is that someone who isn't being paid 24 hours a day shouldn't be punished if they're not online and available 24 hours a day, " he said.
The bill also includes rules that will give temporary (临时的) workers guidelines about how to move into permanent work.
Adam Bandt is the leader of the left-wing Greens. He said his party supports the law. So do leaders of the Labor Party and other smaller parliamentary groups.
Some politicians, however, had different opinions. They warned that a new labor law would hurt Australia's ability to be competitive with other nations. And making a new labor law might make it difficult for someone who wants to work flexible(灵活的) hours.
Bandt said Australians work an average of six unpaid weeks each year. He said that totals about $60billion of unpaid wages. "That time is yours, " he said, "not your boss's. "
Finally, the new rule came into force in August, 2024, which means Australian employees now have the right to ignore work emails, calls after work hours.

With all our modern education and technology, we might think we're smarter than people born a century ago. But are we really?
It's not quite clear, but scientists do think that over the last century our brains have been getting bigger. A new study has found that people born in the1970s had a
6. 6% larger brain volume (容量) and 15% larger brain surface than those born in the 1930s. According to the research team, it's possible that larger brains could reduce the risk of age-related dementia—a gradual decline (衰退) in memory, thinking, behavior and social skills.
The researchers looked at MRI (磁共振成像) scans of participants in the Framingham Heart Study in theUS. This is a health survey that began in 1948 and is now looking at its third generation of participants. TheMRI scans were done between 1999 and 2019, and more than 3, 000 people were studied. As well as increased brain size, the study found that brain structures including the hippocampus (海马)— the area that deals with learning and memory— have grown in size. That's when comparing people born in the 1970s with those born in the 1930s, and when accounting for factors like increased body size.
The study's first author Charles DeCarli said larger brain structures may reflect improved brain development and improved brain health. He added, "A larger brain structure represents a larger brain reserve (储备). "This means the brain might be better able to deal with the damage that comes with getting older. This could help reduce the risk of age-related brain diseases likeAlzheimer's(阿尔茨海默病), DeCarli said.
The number of people living with Alzheimer's in theUS has been increasing since the 1970s, as the population has grown and aged. But as a percentage of population, the rate has actually been decreasing by 20% per decade.
DeCarli thinks larger brains may have had an effect on this trend, but further research is required.
