What inventions do you think are the most important? Here are four important ones.

Paper is one of the most important inventions in the world. It's not easy for people to write without paper. Cai Lun's invention allowed people to write down information, stories and history on paper.

The toilet is a simple and important invention. Before toilets, waste would go into the rivers from people's homes. However, with toilets, people can deal with their waste in a cleaner way. This has helped to make people less sick and keep cities cleaner.

Another great invention is animal food. But then, hay (干草) came along and became a popular and easy-to-get food for animals. Then animals could live through the long winter.

When people are more than 45 years old, they often start having trouble seeing things up close. It is called far-sightedness (远视眼). This makes it hard to see things clearly that are close to them. Thankfully, reading glasses were invented to solve this problem.

Do you know of other important inventions?

    A. This made people sick in cities.

    B. The fourth great invention is reading glasses.

    C. In 105 AD, Cai Lun in ancient China invented paper.

    D. They allow people to easily read, write and do "close work".

    E. Before this invention, most animals died in autumn because there wasn't enough food for them to eat.

  • 15、When ChatGPT came out last November, Olivia Lipkin, a copywriter (文案写手) in San Francisco, didn't care too much about it. However, over the next few months, Lipkin found herself with less and less work to do. In April, she lost her job with no explanation. She realized why she had lost her job later when she heard managers talking about how using ChatGPT was cheaper than hiring (雇用) a human writer.

Lipkin was not alone. Eric Fein, a 34-year-old man in the U. S. state of Illinois, had been running a writing company for ten years. He became jobless last March. All his clients (客户) told him they no longer needed his services because they were turning to ChatGPT. Fein warned them that ChatGPT couldn't write with his level of creativity. His clients said they understood, but it was far cheaper to use the chatbot (聊天机器人) than to pay him.

Experts think that A. I. systems (人工智能系统) like ChatGPT could make hundreds of millions of people lose their jobs in the future. But for those who write posts and advertisements on the internet, the effect is already here. They also say that even the best A. I. systems can't compare with the writing skills of a human. They don't have personal voices or styles. Besides, they often give the wrong answers.

After being replaced by ChatGPT, Fein and Lipkin decided to do a job that A. I. can't do. "People are looking for the cheapest method, and that's not a person—it's a robot." Lipkin says.

(1)、Why did Lipkin have less and less work to do?
A、Because managers hired a new copywriter. B、Because she was not good at finishing her work. C、Because she used ChatGPT to complete her work. D、Because her managers gave more work to ChatGPT.
(2)、The writer used the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 to ________.
    A、list some numbers B、answer a question C、give another example D、express some feelings
(3)、Fein thought his writing services were better than those of ChatGPT in terms of (在……方面) ________.
    A、creativity B、cost C、personal style D、writing skills
(4)、Which of the following statements do experts agree with?
A、A. I. systems like ChatGPT can be as good as humans in the writing skills. B、A. I. systems like ChatGPT may make many people lose jobs, and they have some disadvantages. C、Writers should learn to use A. I. systems like ChatGPT to keep their jobs. D、People can't get right answers from A. I. systems like ChatGPT.
  • 16、Numbers are everywhere in our world. They do much more than just count things. They help us understand life and solve difficult problems.

    Science & Health

Numbers keep us safe and healthy. Builders use special numbers like 3.14 (π) to make strong bridges that won't fall down. Doctors use numbers like 37℃ (normal body temperature) and 60-100 beats per minute (normal heartbeat) to check health.

    ________

Numbers tell us about people. Did you know that Asia has around 4.8 billion people? That's more than half of all people on Earth! Leaders use these numbers to decide how many schools to build. In bad times, numbers help decide how much food or medicine is needed. Stores even use numbers to know which products sell well.

    Everyday Uses

We see numbers every day. When baking a cake, you need twice as much flour as sugar. At stores, a 20% discount means you can pay less money. On the road, signs like "60 km/h" tell drivers the maximum speed. Dates also use numbers, like "June 26th".

There are also some fun facts about numbers. People think differently about some numbers. In China, people believe that the number 8 means good fortune. Meanwhile, in some Western countries, people think 13 is unlucky.

Numbers help us describe everything—from small things to huge stars. They are the world's special language.

Here are two articles from an encyclopedia.

    Diogenes

Diogenes (412 BC—323 BC) was an intelligent man in ancient Europe. For him, the way to be happy was to own as few things as possible. He only had three things—his clothes, a lantern (灯笼) and a bowl to eat with, but he was very happy. One day, Diogenes saw a boy drinking water from his hands by a river, and then he threw away his bowl.

Diogenes used to walk through the city with his lantern during the day. When people asked him why he carried the lantern, he would hold it up to their faces, look at them and say, "I'm looking for an honest man." (See    a   )

    Whales

Whales are the largest animals on Earth and they live in every ocean. The first fossil whales are found in rocks around 50 million years old. Some are 30 metres long and some are as heavy as 33 elephants.

Whales are not fish. They live in the water, but they breathe air. Like humans, they are warm-blooded mammals (哺乳动物). Whales produce sounds that can be heard for miles underwater. They often use calls to sense (感知) the environment and to talk with each other.

Nowadays, some kinds of whales are in danger, even after years of protection. People kill at least 300,000 whales and dolphins each year by fishing. (See    b   )
