  • 17、Animal waste is becoming a treasure! Scientists find a special way to use animal poop (粪便). They call their project "Poo Zoo". This project is really helpful to protect wildlife.

Animal poop has living cells (细胞) with DNA. The DNA gives us important information for wild animal breeding programs (繁育计划) and protection. This is very important as the number of wildlife is quickly dropping.

Usually, getting a piece of skin from wildlife to study is hard. People have to catch the animals and make them sleep. This not only takes a lot of time but also can be bad for the animals.

Professor Suzannah Williams from the University of Oxford created the "Poo Zoo" project. The idea is to collect living cells from animal poop and grow the cells in labs (实验室).

Starting with mouse poop, the team tried many ways to collect the cells and keep them fresh. After improving their skills, scientists turned to elephant poop. They cleaned the poop carefully and took out the living cells. Professor Williams told CNN that the team successfully collected living elephant cells many times.

However, it's not easy to make life from these living cells now. Poop has a lot of bacteria (细菌), so scientists need a better way to grow healthy cells, said Vice.

(1)、What can the "Poo Zoo" project help do?

(2)、What is the DNA from animal poop used for?

(3)、From which animals' poop did scientists collect living cells?

(4)、Why is it difficult to make life from these living cells now?

(5)、What do you think of this project? And why?

A cute animal with four legs? Actually, dogs are much more than that! There are many secrets about them. Let's take a closer look into the world of dogs and learn more about them. Dogs are famous for their great senses. With over 100 million scent cells (嗅觉细胞), dogs can smell thousands of scents. And they can hear sounds from farther away than humans because of their special ear shape. These abilities make dogs important in many places. For example, in places like train stations and airports, police dogs can find out dangerous things like drugs and bombs. And for blind people, guide dogs are very helpful. They can help them "see" and travel around safely.

Just like humans, most dogs have a favourite paw. They might be right-pawed or left-pawed. To figure out which paw your dog prefers, you can watch it walk and see which paw it usually puts forward first. Dogs not only walk on paws, but also sweat through them. Because of this, their paws are easy to get dirty with bacteria (细菌), and sometimes they even give off a popcorn-like smell.

Dogs have many ways to communicate. One way they do this is by smelling each other's butts (屁股). The special smell can help dogs learn about others' gender ♀♂, feelings, and health. Dogs also use body language to "show" their feelings. For example, they may turn in circles to say hello or hold their tails between their legs when they are afraid or sad.

Earlier this year, some of those mountain climbers had some help in the form of robotic exoskeletons (外骨骼) that gave some extra power to their legs.

Ten exoskeletons were introduced at the mountain for a short experiment between 29th January and 4th February., which are set to the waist and legs and weigh just 1.8 kg.

The exoskeletons use AI that can sense and help the users' movements to stop their legs from getting too tired.

, working with the company that made the exoskeletons, Kenqing Technology.

Wang Houzhe of the TCTG said that the exoskeletons were introduced to help older people enjoy climbing the mountain, instead of having a limited view from a cable car (缆车).

It's reported that half the people who used the exoskeletons during the test at Mount Tai were old people.
