The Foolish Man and the Apples

One day, a poor but proud man was going to the house of a wealthy merchant, hoping for a feast. As he went along the road, he saw a box ofred apples at the side of the road. The man paused, but he thought," Why should I eat the common fruit? The great merchant will give me better food. Perhaps there will be honeyed sweets and spiced meat." 

Then he took the apples and threw them away, letting them roll into the dust. He went on and came to a river. He found the gentle water transformed into a rapid current because of the flood. It was impossible to cross it. After hours of waiting, he sighed, "I can't dine in the house of the great merchant today. The river blocks my way." 

He began to go home without any food. On his way home, he sawt h eapples again. His pride went away. He gathered them from the dust like precious jewels. He laughed at himself when he ate the sweet apples, "How foolish I was!" 

Never throw good things away because you may need them some time. 

When I'm in trouble, I always take out a book and read quietly. I put my heart into it so that I'll forget all the  (happy) things. I've had a habit of reading in this way. 

When I was a little boy, I liked comic books and storybooks. When I was a middle school student, I was  (interest) in novels, plays, essays (散文) and so on. I found I could get much from them. Last term I  (win) first prize in the composition contest (竞赛) in our city. 

My favourite book is The Old Man and the Sea. It is fascinating and worth 59. (read) for young people. It is a great work written by the American writer Ernest Hemingway. The book is about a story of  old fisherman, Santiago. It tells us that he hasn 't caught any fish for 84 days. But on the 85th day, he goes out and catches a huge marlin (马林鱼). That is when the real trouble begins. Santiago is a confident and hard-working fisherman. He never gives up along the way  he ends up with nothing. Many people are moved by his strong spirit. That spirit is just what we need. Life i salong road and full o f  (difficulty), but if we have the courage to face the challeng e ,we  (be) real winners. If you want to know  (much), please read this book. 

Some books also tell me other things—how to be a brave man and how to tell the  (different) between the right and the wrong. 

In a word, good books can make me know what I didn't know before. So I think good books are my best friends. 

Leo was a small and thin boy. Some boys in the village often made fun of him, which made him sad. One day, a wizard (男巫) saw Leo being made fun of. When the other boys left, the wizard went over to Leo. "When a person wearing it acts bravely, he turns into a lion," the wizard told Leo. 

 When the boys came, Leo felt the tail behind his body and remembered what the wizard had said.  He looked at them and said he would make them feel sorry for what they did. Hearing this,t he boys looked at each other and finally ran away as quickly as possible. Leow as very happy.  But he was a bit disappointed that his new lion body lasted on lya short time, so he couldn't fight them. 

The wizard saw everything and told him that no one fights with lions because lions are very brave and strong. Leo understood everything. There was no magic and no transformation.  Bravery is power.

②Long ago, the snake and the frog were friends. At that time, t hesnake had four legs, while the frog had no legs. 

③The snake was lazy and waited all day for the frog to cat ch insects for it. The frog also helped people catch pests (害虫), so the frog was loved by people, but the snake was not. 

④When the snake found that, it began to hate them and started tobite (咬) them. The Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝) knew that and he asked the snake not to hurt people. The snake, however, didn't change. The Jade Emperor became very angry and cut off its four legs and gave them to the warm-hearted frog. 

⑤After the frog got legs, it became more diligent in helping people catch pests. The snake lost its legs and was very sad. It got angry with the frog and decided not to see it again. 

⑥Then, the snake realized its mistake and wanted to change. It stopped doing bad things and even learned from the Loong how to stop floods by controlling water. It also asked people to use its body as medicine after it died. 

⑦The Jade Emperor saw the snake's change, so he placed it in the Chinese zodiac after the Loong. After being a zodiac sign, the snake sometimes had bad thoughts. When this happened, the snake would turn the bad thoughts into a layer of skin (一层皮肤) and then take off the skin, throwing away the bad thoughts . Still, the snake was full of hate for the frog. Today, the sn akestill bites the frog whenever it sees the frog. 

I arrived home from work, but my mind was still busy. I was goi ngto perform a very important experiment (实验), but I had spent the whole day worrying abou t it. And I wanted to shake off my worries very much. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, sat on my sofa, and opened a book. Almost aton ce, my mind left behind the experiment and went into a wonderful world differen tfrom my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.

When I grew up, I was never a big fan of novels. My classmatesw ould be crazy about the latest novel, while my copy was lying on a bookshelf all the time. Instead, I would choose to read all the books about school lessons. After I started graduate studies (研究生学业), extra reading didn't interest me at all, but I spen t most of my time at school working on research papers. At home,I was unable to read novels. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again. 

To help me stick to it, I made a New Year 'splan: I would read two novels per month. The result was that I loved novels almost at once, along with many unexpected benefits.

____. Some of the best books that I read were historical novels. I learned about life in different countries, as well as difficulties whi chpeople there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me get a better understanding. I've started to think more deeply about the different types of the scientific problems in my study and I could serve them with all my heart. 

There once was a little weed (野草) in a field. All around it stood tall an d beautiful flowers. The children liked to play in the field all year round. One fine day, three sisters came to play. They were laughing and chatti ngwith each other. 

"Let's pick some flowers for Grandma!" said one. 

"That's a good idea!" said another. "She will love these beautiful flowers!" 

The children began picking flowers and soon, almost all the flowers in the field were in their hands. 

"What about that one?" the youngest child said, pointing at the weed. 

"Forget it!" said the oldest one. "That's just a useless weed!" 

Hearing this, the weed felt upset." Am I really useless?" It asked itself.  "Why was I put on this Earth?" With all the nearby flowers gone, the little weed felt lonely. Even though it had felt envious (嫉妒的) of the tall flowers, it liked being around them. 

The autumn wind blew over the field, and the snows of winter came very soon. Just then, the weed noticed some birds flying high aboveth e field. "We are hungry!" they cried. "Where can we find food to eat?" 

The weed felt sorry for the poor birds and called out to them,"H ey! I have tasty seeds that you can eat!" "You are so kind!" the birds said as they enjoyed the seeds. "They are delicious and they will keep us full for a long time!" 

What they said made the little weed feel happy. It was glad to help its new friends. "At last, I have found out what I am good for!" the weed thought. "Next year, I will make twice as many seeds, so I can feed more hungry birds that need food!" 

The weed looked forward to telling the tall flowers all about its new friends when they grew back in spring. Now, it feels great to be a little weed! 

World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on April 23 to improve the enjoyment of reading. Many people like reading novels. I like ovnels too. The four great classical novels are my favorites.
