Packing for a family holiday often feels like a rush to remember necessary things like socks or medicine.However，for children，packing can be valuable because it helps them learn math in real life.

Have you ever seen a wall of sand coming towards you? It is not a cloud. It is a sandstorm!

A sandstorm happens in hot, sandy areas, such as Saudi Arabia, North Africa and the USA. Winds in the desert pick up the top layer(层) of sand and lift(扬起) it into the air. Sandstorms can be very big.The wall of sand can be up to 15 metres tall and many miles long. Sand from the storm can rise much higher, up to 1,500 metres. Sandstorms can travel 25 miles an hour. So if you see one coming, you must act quickly. It will arrive before you know it!

Sandstorms usually happen in summer, the driest time of the year, when sand lifts up easily. They are dangerous for many reasons. First, you cannot see well outside. Sand gets into your nose and mouth and can go into your lungs(肺). Second, drivers cannot see clearly, so accidents become more frequent(频繁的).

If you have to go outside in a sandstorm, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Also, cover your mouth and nose with a scarf. It is also important to close all doors and windows. Even if you do your best, sand still gets into the house. Everything gets dusty— even the pages of your books!

Sandstorms are a serious problem in many parts of the world. Scientists are studying ways to stop them, such as planting more trees. Remember, if a sandstorm is coming, stay inside and stay safe.
