1、Just like any relationship, best friendships depend on trust, promise, respect and interests. When any of these elements is missing, the friendship will be hard to go on. If the trust is totally broken, you may not be able to forgive him or her. Sometimes a friendship ends because either you or your friend gets tired of putting the heart into it. This can happen when one of you finds a new friend or even a new hobby that takes up much time. Or, perhaps you find the relationship is always going in an unhealthy way and you want some distance. Other times, you simply change and want to leave each other. Sure, it seems sad at the time, but it's completely normal. Not all friendships are meant to last forever. So, what should you do if something like this happens to you? Read on for some friendly advice.
Whatever the reason you're breaking up with your best friend, always remember that he or she was once super important to you. Take the time to sit down privately and tell him/her what's going on and why. Don't send him or her an unpleasant e-mail or just start ignoring (不理睬) him or her. In fact, maybe he or she has known there's a problem and would be willing to have a heart-to-heart chat. If you're not sure about wanting an end forever, you could suggest you two take a break from each other. If, after a while, you realize why you became the best friends in the beginning, you can try getting back to your former behaviors. Whatever you do, be honest about your feelings while having respect for his or hers. And if you both agree the BFF thing is over, make sure not to be enemies.

2、My 20-year-old daughter, Ann, living in Philadelphia, sent me a message the other day. "I need socks and shampoo." She was actually asking me to prepare those things for her, but I thought she was playing a cell phone game. I decide not to be a helicopter (直升机) mother, because experience as a mother and professor has taught me how badly that can result. Instead, I prefer a more hands-off way. From the time Ann turned 16, I don't want to know her work and life schedule any longer.
But that's not what I see at Drexel University where I teach. Most of my students talk to their parents three times a day or more. One student's mother called her son because she didn't hear from him for a few days. The son was in the library so he whispered "hello". The mother doubted that he was drinking, and insisted on asking him to take a picture of himself. Holding a newspaper with that day's date, the son had to take a photo of himself and sent it to his mother in order to prove that he wasn't telling a lie.
I always think that my students should depend on themselves. I tell them that I will not check whether they miss classes and finish homework or not. Because they are independent thinkers and they should take responsibility for their own choices.
But their parents don't treat them like me. I know a mother. She puts her eyes on her son too much. She hopes he will walk by the camera so that she can know what he is doing. Another mother checks her son's credit card daily. However, I never do that. My daughters only come to me with important things when they need my decision. I think that's because I give them space.
Many parents try to find if their kids are hiding from them. But we have to learn to respect boundaries (界限), even when technology is so powerful now. So I am going to do my best not to be a helicopter parent.
(1)、The underlined phrase "a helicopter mother" in Paragraph 1 means "________".A、a mother who treats the child as an independent being. B、a mother who pays close attention to their children. C、a mother who prefers a more hands-off way. D、a mother who gives her children space.(2)、Why does the author mention different ways of mothering?A、To show how responsible those mothers are. B、To show that mothers should make decisions for their children. C、To show that space is needed for children to become independent. D、To show that some helicopter mothers love their children so much.(3)、What's the attitude of the author towards helicopter parents?A、Agree. B、Neutral (中立). C、Disagree. D、Unknown.(4)、What will probably be discussed after the last paragraph?A、Advice on respect boundaries between parents and children. B、The powerful technologies for helicopter parents. C、The disadvantages of being helicopter parents. D、The advantages of being hands-off parents. -
3、Being compared to great people like Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein is not something that happens to a common person. At the age of just 23, Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski has already achieved many more goals than most of us ever will in our lifetime.
When she was only 14 years old, the Chicago girl made her own single-engine airplane by herself. Then at 16, she flew it across Lake Michigan, becoming the youngest person to ever fly her own plane. She recorded this two-year experience and put it on YouTube.
Completing her study in Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in 2010, she entered Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
At first, she had to wait to be accepted into the school but once Professors Allen Haggerty and Earll Murman watched her video, they had no doubt. After just three years at MIT, she has already achieved the highest possible grade point—an average (平均) of 5.0.
She is now studying further at Harvard University, with full academic freedom (学术自由). Once again she is only 23 years old.
What's even more amazing is that she is no longer interested in building planes but has turned her attention to physics, namely black holes and how gravity has an effect on space and time—that is why she is being compared to Einstein and Hawking. And she records all of her work on her website Physicsgirl.
During an interview earlier this year she said, "Look on the bright side about what you believe you can do. When you're little, you say a lot of things about what you'll do or be when you're older—I think it's important not to forget those dreams. You must hold on to your dreams and have a strong will. Work hard and never give up. Your dreams will come true finally!"
(1)、Why does the writer mention Einstein and Hawking at the beginning?A、To remember the two scientists. B、To compare the two scientists. C、To bring out the main character. D、To introduce their achievements.(2)、What helps Pasterski get a chance to study at MIT?A、Her further study in Harvard. B、Her highest average grade point of 5.0. C、Her ability of making videos on YouTube. D、Her video of making and flying her plane.(3)、What is the right order of the events about Pasterski?a. Study at Harvard University.
b. Wait to be accepted by MIT.
c. Achieve an average of 5.0 grade point.
d. Finish her study in IMSA in 2010.
e. Make a single engine airplane alone.
A、e-d-c-b-a. B、e-d-b-c-a. C、d-e-c-a-b. D、d-e-a-c-b.(4)、Which is important for people to succeed according to Pasterski?A、Being friendly and strong-minded. B、Being positive and strong-minded. C、Being friendly and hard-working. D、Being interesting and hard-working -
4、The classroom was full of those of us who wanted to work on the school newspaper. I didn't write a lot, but working on the paper1 like fun. I liked the idea of being a reporter, interviewing my friends, and2 middle school events.
To be chosen, we had to turn in an example of our3. I wrote an article about the joys of summer, and showed it to my father, a talented poet. He read it and frowned (皱眉).
"It's okay," my father said, taking out a pencil. "But how about changing this sentence to..." And as a result, he rewrote the whole piece—without me, for I never said anything to4 him.
No surprise—his version was wonderful. He had a gift for language. It was so much better than my piece that I turned in his version instead of mine.
"Welcome to the Dundee School News." my teacher said to me. But before I could be5 about the news, he added, "Based on that excellent article you wrote about summer, I expect you to write an opinion article every week for the second page of the paper."
I was so surprised. I was unable to write at that level, but I couldn't tell the6 to the teacher, and I couldn't ask my father for help, either.
That term working on the paper was really painful. And my teacher expressed his7. "Can't you write something more like that first piece you wrote?" he said each time I turned in my article.
I couldn't, because at that age, I didn't have my father's ability and experience as a writer. Week after week, I tried hard, but my writing never8 the level of the first article.
At last, to my total shame, another student took my place. I9 that my father rewrote my first article himself, instead of trying to help me to improve it. But in my heart I knew it was my fault because I allowed him to do it.
Later, I did become a successful writer on my own. Looking back, I realized that the pain and shame of that school experience had a10 side. It taught me to depend on myself and be myself. So every day, I try to use my own words, find my own style and be my own best self. It feels great.
