When you see a globe, close your eyes and spin(旋转) it quickly. Then stop it with your finger. You will probably land on a body of water(水域). That's because water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface.But if you don't hit water, you might discover a place you've never heard of.

These days, computers and smartphones can tell us where we are. But globes have remained popular.Peter Bellerby, a globe maker in London, says this is because a globe"connects us to our planet". With a globe, you can easily see what's on the other side of the world from where you are. Joshua Nall is a museum director in England. He agrees that technology can give students more detailed information about the world.But the physical globe has become a symbol of knowledge.

Bellerby's company makes about 600 globes a year. To make a globe, workers produce a sphere(球状物) first. Then they place map pieces, called"gores" onto the globe. The gores fit together to cover the sphere completely. Artists then paint the globe with different colours.

The world's oldest surviving globe dates from the 1490s. It is called the"Earth Apple". Martin Behaim,a German, made it. The globe shows the world in the late 15th century. You won't find North or SouthAmerica on it because Europeans hadn't discovered them yet. Two of the world's most famous globes were created about 450 years later. They were made for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War Ⅱ.

In a village lived a young and successful businessman, named James. But he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges he faced.

Most of people think sex(性别) can influence interests and jobs. For example, boys do maths than girls, while girls are more talented in languages. We usually think this is because of  in how boys'and girls' brains work. But is it true?

According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size.   used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning(扫描)   brains. However, in most of the studies, researchers only scanned fewer than 100 people.

Recently, the UK Biobank, a big database(数据库), scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK,  new understanding. It showed differences between men and women in size for certain brain parts.About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men.  another third were larger in women.

However, these differences were very   , often just a size difference in percentage. The differences are not big to get a conclusion(结论) from them, Camille Williams from the University of Texas atAustin, US, told New Scientist.

According to our life experiences, our brains might  in structure and size. For example,even if a part of a man's brain, good at doing maths, is larger than that of a woman, it is  because he takes jobs that use maths skills. So any brain differences between men and women could be a result of different roles in life and  , not a cause.

From the end of April to the beginning of May, thousands of people both at home and abroad celebrate the Monihei Carnival(狂欢节) in Cangyuan, Yunnan where the Wa people have lived for centuries.

"Monihei" is putonghua pronunciation of the term"moh nin hei" used by the Wa people, meaning"This is what we expect. Keep going!" The Wa people used to say so after a big harvest(丰收), but now it's heard more often, for example, at a birthday party or a house-warming party.

The Wa people have great respect for the colour black. It is seen as the symbol of hard work and health.During the festival, the Wa people use a kind of natural medicine called"Niang Bu Luo" to paint each other black or draw special signs on their faces. It's believed that bad luck or illnesses can be avoided in this way.

For this year's Monihei Carnival, everyone on the street appeared in black. It's reported that more than18,900 visitors gathered on May 2nd to take part in the carnival. "We guess Cangyuan has received over 60,000tourists since late April and the number is still rising," a staff person from local government said proudly.

A movie house in Guangzhou is going to play old movies to interest more people. Their tickets will be priced around 25 – 30 yuan for adults. Teenagers under 18 can get 50% off.
