What do you usually do if you' re free? Nowadays, a DIY activity namedPindou is becoming more and more popular. A lot of people like it because they can focus on the picture and do it (quiet).

The Summer Solstice is a special time of the year. It falls in late June every year. On this day, the (温度) rises and the weather turns warm. The daytime is long (足够的)for people to enjoy many outdoor activities.

In ancient China, it was once an important day. People even had a three-day holiday to (放松). Today, Chinese people still have many ways to celebrate it and these activities (鼓励) family to get together. They prepare different (菜)and interesting traditions. Eating noodles is one of the most (普遍的)  ones on that day.After a busy and tiring day, people love staying with their families and being together to (寻找)for happiness. In Henan Province, nearly one thousand people gather to eat noodles as a (一餐)to celebrate it. At this solar term, farmers are also busy working in the fields. They start to grow more plants and hope for a bright future. Everyone (赞美) the lovely weather and beautiful sights,wishing (每件事) will go well.

Do you know that China has 24 solar terms (节气)? you are interested in Chinese culture, you will find the 24 solar terms are a special part of it. The Chinese people learned it from their farming  long long ago. Thanks to these solar terms, people had a  way between farming and nature, farmers could plan when to plant and water crops wisely. It greatly    their farming ways. Even today, we also plan many activities according to the solar terms, they are about living in harmony (和谐) with nature. What do you  them?

It was a cold winter morning. My 12-year-old granddaughter, Jayne, sent me 1 on the phone every hour during her six-hour drive to our house in Virginia, the US.

How to Keep Cool in Hot Summer

Now the weather is getting hotter year by year. We are having hotter summers than before. Very hot weather is not only uncomfortable but also bad for our health. It may even make us sick. So it is very important for us to learn how to stay cool safely in hot weather. Here are some useful ways for you.

First, stay away from strong midday sun.. Because your body can get too hot under strong sunlight. Wear big and soft clothes that can keep your body from strong sunlight.

Second, drink a lot of water all the time. When you lose water from your body, your body loses important minerals(矿物质)..

Third, cool your body in easy ways. You can wash your hands with cold water, use ice bags on your face or hands.

Fourth, keep your home cool.. If you feel too hot, you can even take a shower to cool down quickly.

Do you stand outside and feel the wind on your face? You might wonder, where does the wind come from? What makes it move all the time?

Scientists tell us that the sun is the real"driver" of wind. Here is how it works. When the sun shines, it heats(加热) the land and water on Earth. Then the land and water warm the air above them.Warm air becomes lighter, so it rises up into the sky. As it goes up, cool and heavier air moves in to take its place. This movement of warm and cool air is what we call wind. It happens all over the world.

The speed (速度) of wind can be different. When air moves slowly, we feel a light, gentle (温和的) wind. You can see leaves dancing in the air. But when air moves very fast, it becomes a strong wind or even a storm. It can blow down trees and umbrellas! The speed of wind often tells us a lot about the coming weather. For example, if the wind suddenly becomes much stronger, a storm or rain may be on the way.

Where the wind comes from also matters. Air over the land is usually dry, while air over the sea or a large lake is wet. Winds from the sea often bring rainy or cloudy weather. Winds from the land bring dry and sunny days. So when you feel the wind, remember —— it all begins with the sun!

An old man saw some boys throwing stones at a little bird."Don't do that," he said.

A boy answered,"She makes a loud noise. We can't bear (忍受) it."

The old man said,"The stone may rebound(回弹) and hurt you for a long time." The boys didn't understand. So he told them a true story.

"Fifty years ago, I also liked throwing stones. I had no one to play with, so I became very good at it. One day I went to work for an old couple. They were very kind to everyone, even to birds. A bird had come to build her nest (鸟巢) in the same place for seven years. When I arrived, the bird and her husband just came back. The old couple welcomed them happily. I wanted to test my skill. I found a nice stone and threw it at the bird. It hit her on the head, and she died. I realized I did something wrong. Her husband flew around and chirped(发啁啾声) sadly all day. That made me feel worse. The old couple learned what I did. They never said a word to me, they just looked at the bird with heavy hearts. I could not look them in the eye."

 "They are all dead now, but I have never forgotten that day. For fifty years, that memory has hurt me like a rebounding stone."

The boys dropped their stones and never troubled the bird again.

Meet Sea Turtles

There are seven kinds of sea turtles in the world. Each sea turtle has a hard shell (壳). It also has strong flippers (鳍状肢)to help it swim fast in the water. The front flippers push water, and the back flippers help the turtle turn. With these flippers, sea turtles can swim very well in the ocean. They can live for many years —— some can live to be over 50 years old!

A lamp (灯) was filled with fresh oil and gave off soft light every evening. However, as time  (go) by, the lamp became very proud  itself, "I shine even more beautifully than the sun. Everyone likes my light, and I am  (important) thing in this room."

One evening, the owner lit it with a match as usual, a strong wind came through the open window and put out its flame at once. Suddenly, the room became completely dark. The lamp tried  (light) itself over and over again but failed. It could do nothing but feel helpless.

Soon the owner came in and lit the lamp the  (two) time with a match carefully. Then he said to the lamp in  serious way, "You should not think too highly of yourself because your light comes from the oil inside you. Instead, the sun shines brightly all the time. Your true value is to shine quietly, not to keep your eyes on  great you are."

The lamp felt very sorry. Since that night, it  (shine) brightly every evening and has kept helping people see (clear) in the dark, staying silent all the time.

Lately, a high school Chinese teacher asked her students an  (不寻常的) question: "If you had to choose one word to show you are not an AI, what would it be?"  (令人惊讶), it quickly became a popular topic online later.

The students gave some meaningful answers. One student chose "Worry", saying that AI can't understand why people feel  (孤独的) when they have few friends. Some picked "Slow", showing that humans would like to slow down for beautiful sunrises or gentle  (海浪).

Other popular words included " (好奇心)", "Pain" and "Love", which are emotions that come from real-life experiences. One student even chose "Failure", because AI always  (避免) mistakes but humans learn from them. Another chose "Hurtful", describing  (私人的) feelings that machines can never truly feel. People may suffer from such emotions deeply.  (虽然) there isn't a standard answer to this question, different answers show human warmth and that is what matters most.

These teenagers' answers remind us that experiences in life  (提供) chances for humans to grow emotionally, so they can express  (他们自己) bravely and care for people around them, but AI cannot make it.

Today, if we talk about a color, we only need to use a single word. However, ancient Chinese people preferred to name colors from  works. Take the pink color taoyao (桃夭) as an example. Taoyao came from The Book of Poetry. Besides, in ancient China, a color was not just a color, but a symbol of social position. For example, yellow stood for , so only the royal (皇室的) family could use it. Therefore, the special ways to name and classify (分类) colors could  the ancient Chinese people's unique (独一无二的) understanding of beauty.

Imagine this: you're sitting in your room with nothing to do. No homework, no messages, no videos. You feel bored. Many people think boredom (无聊) is a waste of time or even harmful. But scientists have found that boredom can actually be good for you.

When you feel bored, your brain doesn't stop working. Instead, a system called the "default mode network" (默认模式网络) becomes active. Unlike most brain systems that need a clear task to work, this one works best when there's no outside task to focus on. Your brain is free to remember things, connect ideas in new ways, and think about what you really want.

Boredom helps you grow. When there's nothing to do, you have to decide what to do next. This builds skills like planning, organizing, and problem-solving. The discomfort (不舒服) of boredom is useful too. It teaches you to manage your feelings and be patient.

What's more, it can help you develop creativity. When there's nothing to do, your mind looks for something more interesting and that search can lead to (带来) new ideas. The British writer Meera Syal is a great example. She grew up in a village with little to do. Boredom made her write—she kept a diary from a young age, filling it with stories and poems. She became a creative adult by using her boring moments.

However, today's technology makes it hard to get these benefits. Whenever we feel bored, we reach for our phones. Fast videos and games keep the brain too busy. The default mode network hardly gets the chance to work. We don't experience the kind of boredom that leads to growth—we just want more screen time.

So the next time you feel bored, don't rush to your phone. Give your mind some quiet space, and see where it takes you. Maybe a book, maybe a project, maybe something you've never thought of. Who knows—that feeling might lead to something great.

Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy, was flying alone to visit his father in the far north of Canada when the pilot suddenly fell ill and died. The plane crashed (撞击) into a lake deep in the wilderness (荒野). Brian swam to land, hurt and alone, with nothing but a hatchet (手斧)—a small tool his mother gave him before the trip. ①

At first, Brian was so afraid. He had no food, no shelter, and no way to call for help. Bugs (虫子) bit him all night, and his body ached from the crash. He built a simple shelter under a rock and found some wild berries to eat, but they made him sick. ② For the first time in his life, he felt truly alone.

Slowly, Brian learned to take care of himself. He discovered he could make fire by hitting the hatchet against a stone. Fire changed everything—it kept animals away, cooked his food, and gave him light in the dark. ③ Day by day, he grew stronger and braver. The wilderness that once scared him began to feel like home.

④ But nature was not always kind. A tornado destroyed his shelter and put out his fire. Another time, a plane flew overhead, but the pilot did not see him. Brian was so heartbroken that he almost gave up. Then he made a decision—he would never feel sorry for himself again. He rebuilt everything with his hatchet and kept going. He was no longer the same boy who climbed onto that plane.

In the end, Brian managed to find an emergency radio from the crashed plane at the bottom of the lake. A rescue plane arrived soon after. Brian survived alone for fifty-four days. He was thin and hurt, but he learned something that would stay with him forever.
