We had a very interesting conversation with June Galloway about her book GetOff on the Right Foot: Don't Let the Wrong GestureRui n Your Day.

Host: English is an international language. But in your book, communication withoutwords is paid more attention to.    ▲    

June: Well, gestures and other body language have different meanings in different places. Something that you think is friendly or polite could be considered very impolite in another culture. I' ve described many of these customs and cultural differences, so my readers won't get off on the wrong foot when they meet people from places where the culture is different from their own.

Host: Can greeting someone the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding?

June: Yes, in some places it can lead to misunderstanding. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake, which is usual in some countries, may seem unfriendly to a North American.

Host: What other gestures can cause misunderstanding?

June: Take the gesture for"come here" for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm (掌心) up. Well, in Southern Europe, that gesture means"goodbye". And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought rude. Instead,people there gesture with the palm down.

Host: Surely, there must be some gestures used everywhere, right? What about the thumb-up(竖拇指) gesturefor"great"?

June: Sorry. That is very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it is important to know about body language and cultural differences.

One day, something went wrong with a man's bicycle chain (链条). The man could not fix it, so he 1 for help. The only house nearby belonged to a woman who had just 2 here a few months ago. The man knocked at the door, but the woman did not answer. There was a piece of clear 3 in the door, so the man could see through the glass that the woman was at home. He decided to knock again.4 , the woman came to the door. The man explained his 5 . "I can fix the chain, " the woman said. After the woman fixed it, the man said, "Thanks. I hope I can help you someday. ""I never need help, " the woman said. 

Then one day, the man 6 the woman walking down the street when he was riding his bike. A strong wind suddenly lifted her hat and blew it into the branches of a tall tree. The woman tried to get her hat with a stick, but she failed. She seemed 7 because she clearly was not dressed for tree-climbing. The man hurried over, quickly climbed up the tree, got the hat and 8 it back to the woman. When the man got on his bike, the woman stopped him and thanked him for his 9 . "I think I told you that I never needed help, " the woman said. "I'm 10 you didn't believe me. Thanks. " Then they both smiled. 

Leisa Duckwall is from Virginia, USA. She has been working at a school'scafeteria(自助餐厅) for over four years. Her 1 is to serve breakfast and lunch to the students.

In the past, the students there weren't 2 to talk to Duckwall because of her hearing problem. They just pointed to the 3 they wanted, and then she would serve them minutes later. Recently, however, things have changed a lot. It all started with one teacher, Kari Maskelony.

Maskelony is a fourth-grade teacher at the school. She 4 American SignLanguage (ASL) because some of her family members have hearing problems.One day, she started communicating with Duckwall in ASL in the cafeteria. The teacher noticed that the students there 5 eating. They watched the sign language communication with 6 .

The next day, Maskelony asked her students,"Would you like to learn how to use your hands to‘talk' to Duckwall?" Everyone in the class said yes 7 . She then began teaching the kids some simple ASL. They learnt how to greet Duckwall and how to 8 food.

When the headmaster 9 this, she decided that the whole school should learn to sign. Now, all the students and staff at the school learn and practise a new word in ASL every week. They are very 10 to learn this new skill. And Duckwall is feeling so loved at work!
